There are some periodic maintenance work of bike (motorcycle) that your mechanic never do during servicing of bikes. One such work is cleaning of fuel valve container.
Petcock or Fuel valve that controls the petrol flow in carbureted bikes. It usually has 2 or 3 setting. ON / RES / PRI / OFF. When the valve is ON, it allows the use of most of the fuel on the tank (except what has being subdivided/designated to be reserve) sometime refers as the MAIN. This is considered the normal operation setting on the bike.
RESERVE - when in RESERVE, this allows ALL the fuel to be access (including the MAIN fuel). If the setting was originally in ON, then when the MAIN is exhausted the engine starts to starve (looses power and sometimes it will start missing) if left alone then it shortly stops running. At such time a rider either pull over (or if experience and accustomed to that bike then when first noticed) and switch it to reserve. The the bike can continue for a few kilometer as per the reserve fuel capacity.
OFF - shut off the petrol all together.
