  • Despite “tensions” between him and the late Lee Kuan Yew towards the end of his political career, former Foreign Affairs Minister George Yeo was eventually able to find closure and reconcile with the man who first beckoned him to enter politics, said the 68-year-old in an interview on Monday (Aug 14).

"Remember your place in society before you engage in political debate. Debate cannot degenerate into a free-for-all where no distinction is made between the senior and junior party, or what the Hokkiens describe as "boh tua, boh suay". You must make distinctions - what is high, what is low, what is above, what is below - and then within this, we can have a debate, we can have a discussion."

George Yeo was reciting what his father or grandmother or mother might have told him when he was young. This is the Chinese dictum that was prevalent in the 50s through the 60s. Only a weak father or leader demands obeisance from his underlings.

George Yeo would still be serving Singapore in the government if not for Aljunied voters voting him out. Many Singaporeans don't realize that public service at that level is a tough job and there are very few people who are willing to step up. and those who step down, they are unlikely to return. So please vote wisely and don't think that the opposition has got a cabinet of capable leaders waiting in line to serve you with the same standard as PAP.

Had "tension" with LKY. He must be good. The problem in Singapore is nobody had the courage to tell a LKY that GDP growth is the wrong economic KPI. That is why after 6 decades Singaore still does not have a Swiss Standard of Living.

@@franciscody9622 What I meant to say was that their vaunted standard of living is nowhere near as luxurious as is often portrayed. Switzerland is a wealthy western European country with a broad middle class. Singapore is a wealthy SE asian country with a broad middle class. Both have high levels of inequality. If you want Singaporeans to have a higher standard of living, you'd know that GDP Growth is the right economic KPI because their GDP per capita is higher than ours.

Very clearly and very evidently as can be witnessed by all, you can 'see' the 'turmoil storm' that is churning within his mind. The years of conditioning of such complex mind in order to navigate the political and social complexities is taking a toll on him without him realizing it. The same is evident in many so-called 'successful' and material rich people who are similarly inflicted with the 'burden' of a complex mind that they will have to carry with them for many many aeons to come. How many more aeons of unconditioning and unlearning before they can put down this 'burden', come out of their mind prison and realize bliss. Only oneself can decide. Before one can even decide, they have to be aware of it in the first place and be consciously and consistently mindful of it. You can only choose to be smart or to be wise. One is not the other and you cannot have the cake and eat it if you truly understand what it is all about. *End of preaching*
