India has a population of close to 1.4 billion. Its top-brains and talents count in millions. It needs only a small fraction of them to flood this tiny island if Singapore, let alone the job market. The question is not whether Singapore welcomes talents from India, but how many and in what sectors? So far, the migrant talents from India (some have become naturalized Singaporean) have featured rather prominently particularly in the financial and IT sectors and seemed to build a network of relationships among themselves to reinforce their presence. Singapore should welcome diverse talents from every corner of the wotld, and not from a particular region or country.

Agree absolutely. Though CECA was GY's noble idea, probably he never realised that there were many who came with "Fake" degrees! As a wise minister, had he not realised that his idea may bring anger to Singaporeans? So if he knew then why bulldozed through the agreement? Is there any data that showed these talents brought new jobs and business to Singapore or are they just free loaders? As what he claims those cream of the crops from India can create more jobs for Singapore then why the Indian government did not keep them and allow them to come to Singapore? With so many of these so called brainy Indians, India should be as rich as China with almost the same number of population.
Cut the bullocks! Stop treating Singaporeans as ignorant or daff!

I heard that Indians rule in Tech Giants like Microsoft, Google because those companies recruited a lot of Indians. And in turn, Indians tend to support and listen to mostly Indian managers. At the end, Caucasian managers were left out, and ignored/hindered by a big chunk of company employees who are Indian. Eventually, you can guess: some Indians within will reach CEO positions or at leats senior managers.

To be able straight talk to point with no punk (intended), GY have again proven beyond doubt the Wisdom He carries and noble standing of exuding thoughts no matter how deep the sensitivity of the topic, subject matter is. Calling a Spade as one without any (political) inclination , accepting flaws of self along the way is such maturity that many (retired) Politicians cannot achieve, let alone fathom. One wonders if Geroge Yeo would agree to be part of The Singapore COnversation, not representing the Govt, but as a neutral observer and a citizen.
Have live debates every 2-weeks/1 month, with a cross-section of society, not just academics, but thoughtful people from different walks of life, different races, maybe different age groups.
It has to be productive, and not a complain session, so participants need to do homework, present arguments ahead that are well-formulated, with motive/intent clearly defined. It might add more value than talking to Ministers.

He believes in a Singapore core which is Chinese language and culture. He is not suitable for a Singapore in the 21st century where china wants to "dominate" ASEAN. Singapore as a Chinese city will be a threat to Beijing. The ccp would support the reunification of Singapore to the Malay heartland as the Chinese want reunification of Taiwan with the mainland. Sir George. I respect your insight and views that local singapore citizen born and gone thru NS are anger over many things with their career and jobs at stake. I hv seen this transition or change happening at the ground level during 1995 onwards where the company i work for comprising 75% FT but not all are as u said "good ones"....I totally agreed this statement "provided they are really bright and able and not those who are not good and taking away jobs from Singaporeans" and " if they do the opposite and look down on Singaporeans, i think we should tell them to pack up and go".... at this juncture, Singaporean are angry but all talk about policies are not working to really help local singaporean to rise up above the water truly can say it is our brand uniquely singapore. No filtering system to ensure we are getting the best who can truly contribute to singapore. No peer apraisal by local coworker team to ensure they are good and talented to bring to Singapore growth..walk the ground more and you will know that chunks and chunks of lousy FT are here to learn and replace Singaporean, they do not expect much when they are new here but u will soon find out and be surprised their expectations are far worst then local singaporeans ... but not adequate policies are in place to ascertain the good ones are truly here but leaving the lousy ones who dont even respect singaporean to live here till today. Important for Singapore to open to the world but also important we open only to truly talented ones who are good and respect singaporean. Sir, May I quote you example of Qatarization where their model is what singapore can quickly model in upscale local talent to take leadership role with expats taking supportive role to enhance country success...qatar do not hv great university ranking like singapore and gdp is behind us but their airline are in par with SIA.. .how then did they rise up so fast and much ? Not to mistaken, we surely want an open economy , a growing gdp, a good standing on world stage but also an exclusive model we can tap on that has proven its result like Qatar..in short put singaporean at the highest level as dept head as key decision maker , groom them not FT so we can hv our own brand that can be that pillar of singapore success......thank you....God bless.

He had spent more than two decades working for that company and finally because of his two young children, he landed up driving a taxi. Can you imagine the immense stress and frustrations he was in. He had also served the NS dutifully and that included many years of reservists training. This is what life is all about in a first world country. Singapore's increasingly Nationalistic pride should never be something to second guess nor even dismiss or curtail. Even if that sense of Nationalism is ascribed primarily to the Chinese and Malay ethnicities. After all this is what ultimately defines Singaporean identity.
What you must ask yourselves however is as to why exactly Indians are primed by Singapore as a leadership tool. Is it true competence hierarchy? Or an alternative intention? If so, is it working as a Value-Add or moreso just rationalisation of their position?
It's a valid question. For Singapore.

Listened to the whole interview. It was great!
You know in pinpointing say the IIT/IIM alumni whom choose to potentially call Singapore home by moving there to work, it shows that there are other intentions at play regarding the recruitment of these 'elite' Indians.
As All countries will likely have inherent filtering systems to decipher the cream on top of the cream. May not have systems to identify the cream. But certainly the cream on top of the cream. Maybe in India, the cream on top of the cream is just the cream?
Singaporeans will have realised this over the past 2 decades. So why continue?
The question for Singapore is What global conditions are forcing Indians to be prioritised?
As said, it has become crystal clear that it is not Competence hierarchy. So what is it?
Estonia is producing far more genuises than India. Cypress too! Etc etc.

A dynamic and wealthy Singapore should benefit local Singaporean. If our people main source of income is from job, of course a direct competition will mean a life and death issue. Singapore government should bend over its back to back up Singaporean to some source of passive income which they could benefit from the influx of foreigners. A way of that is the rental income. However most Singaporean lives in HDB and can only own one flat. If we allow our local to buy additional flat then they will need the foreigners to keep on coming to secure a secondary income. Its an eco system. Presently only those already rich can have a secondary income because their private property allow them to do so without restriction. What is wrong to benefit Singaporean?

All this talk about being pro-China/pro-CCP is simply mindlessly repeating propaganda buzzwords from western mainstream media. Ask yourself, why is it ok to be pro-US/West, but not ok to be pro-China? Being pro-West is assumed to be ok, but being pro-China isn’t? Now that is a one track mind. Neither the US or China is perfect, so we should not be automatically pro either, but make decisions based on the facts and circumstances in each specific situation. For example, Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan was a selfish, stupid, irresponsible and dangerous stunt that could possibly have triggered WW3. Do we automatically take sides with the US on this? Those he mentioned were already the principles guiding our foreign worker policy.
How many of those who huff and puff on the issue really understand what’s really going on? How many of them are ready and willing replacement for those position.
I am not disagreeing there are some who misuse the taking advantage of our friendly policy and environment and may have step overboard. Just like there are “snobbish” foreigner.
But why are we target Indian, because it’s CECA. We have many “snobbish” Ang Moh, Chinese living in our land for so long.
It is obviously to mount a political challenge to the existing government, to make them look bad. And this is exactly the perception of many commoners, that our government sided the foreign to exploit the locals. How naive and ridiculous!
And the aftermath has really blown out of proportion.
Politic is a science of manipulation, especially in the present era. It is dangerous if we put our guard down. Trust from foreign countries is our most precious currency. Our biggest asset is the quality of our leaders.

It’s that the 1.4billion population wish that their offsprings make it through the doors of those 2. And they are the 2 best ones India has to offer. Considering that majority of the Indians can’t afford to send their kids to overseas for education, competition for places within is much more intense. Eg. England has a population of 60 plus million, and has a good collection of reputable universities well recognised worldwide, US has a population of 330 million, and has also some renowned universities. Though they opened up some allocations to overseas students, the pressure to get into each is less intense than as compared to the 2 Indian universities having to take in the cream of the crop from a population of 1.4b. And with a much bigger young population as compared to other countries, competition for space in the elite education is huge. Henceforth, the statement from George Yeo.

George Yeo is as out of touch with the ground as his PAP friends. Few years ago, mainstream media interviewed a Malay siivercab driver who earned S$7000 per month. So, is he a millionaire now? Or he has switched to become a private hire car driver and is earning S$10,000 per month now? Do you think the mainstream media would interview him again?

How do you expect us not to be angry and still accept them with open arms when they fill the better (perhaps define as better paying/ better benefits) jobs and then they themselves hire more Indians. I mean just look at group photos of our local bank lols… well sir of course you think we’re just angry and love to complain but that’s cos you had it easy. They didn’t snatch ur opportunities, ur rice bowl and do shit to u at work. And please just let NTU be NTU, I rly dw to be alumni of a SAP uni. If I wanted to be part of a Chinese uni, I would have gone to China. And how do u differentiate bright and able from not good? There loads of shitty ones that look down on Singaporeans (in front of Singaporeans mind you) and not just Singaporean Indians. So many ain’t even from those two unis u mentioned and uhm I know one that didn’t even go to uni, can’t speak English and can’t be understood but got to AVP level from contract so yeah.. I can really only agree with us not exactly being racist but angry. Yes. Angry.

What is a Singaporean identity? Alot of C don't even let minority race people enter their houses - the very people they have lived with for 50+ years and claim to be in racial harmony with.
There is no 'singapore identity' and there will never be. Its just a busy shopping centre port city where everyone ignores and tolerates each other and gets too busy with overwork. The people in the country will never accept each other for who they are.

If anything, the PAP has, of late, proven quite inept at dealing with change and the unexpected. From the miscarriage of the Neptune Orient Lines to the blunders in geopolitics, from the failed GIC investment in the UBS to the inability to boost labour productivity, from the interminable train system breakdowns to the series of HDB lift mishaps, from the Little India riot debacle to outbreaks of diseases, PAP's leadership has been tested and found manifestly deficient.
The very last thing that our nation needs is continued one-party rule.

Food for thought: Is anywhere else that much better? What is the benchmark? Is the grass always greener on the other side?
There will always be room for improvements, but looking beyond that, the question we must ask ourselves is, what can we as individuals do to change things.
There will always be a one-party rule because it's either the PAP ruling or the opposition ruling, it will always be one party ruling. Everybody will always find faults with the one up there.

Hi, I don't think you quite understand what you are talking about when you said failed investments by GIC.
Do you work in finance (buy-side) particularly? GIC reduced its stake in UBS because its business strategy no longer reflects what GIC desires in its investments.
Like with any investment, GIC assumes risks in its holdings and its only natural that some of them 'fail'.
