- After tinkering with the ORS-87 open source microphone project for the last few weeks, and trying different parts, it's time to take an assessment of what the differences may be in these 5 different builds so far. ORS 87 Roll call in 3, 2...

number 2 is this warmish glowing butter. the real magic is in here somewhere. very good transformer for my own ears
Thanks. I sacrificed a sheep on an altar for this one, so I'm glad it paid off.
Number one, Number one, Number one all the way...
Thanks Danny! I do really like the first mic a lot. And you also left this same comment on my OnlyFans page.
number 2 indeed sounded the best imho, great video concept ,thx
Thank you! Seems #2 is the one to beat here.
The #2 hands down, it had a even sound to it and less sibilance !!
Thank you, Ira!
@@MarkYoshimotoNemcoff Thanks for sharing!
yes , i referd to the x2 22nf in the black electrolitic capacitors the acquitecture didnt require a higher current drow from the main supply for the caps and smoothing for 22nf with film x2 capacitor
Those 22uf were upped from 10uf in the alternative BOM Khron created on GDIY to filter out more DC noise on Homero's board, but I don't really hear a difference between this BOM and the original BOM.
The hot plugging fits the frankenmic theme here... love this direct comparison and the variations. Kinda prefer 1 & 2 above the others.
The two big boys do stand tall. It cannot be denied.
i love the sound of the green mic diff my fav
Thank you. I appreciate the feedback.
Number 2 sounds the best to me. You've got to come up with a better name though. "Number 2" doesn't fit such a nice sounding mic, haha.
I will call it.... Steve.
The first two definitely sounded better than the rest to my ears. I wonder how much of it is the capsule, and how much of it might be the body/headbasket. I liked the EQ profile of number 1 the best, but number 2 sounded smoother in the midrange to me. Might be the higher quality transformer.
I definitely agree the larger, more u87-ish size bodies and headbaskets improve the tone. That 3u transformer does feel like it’s doing more in the midrange than the Ali.

Have you tried the UTM transformer? Or are you perhaps planning to? Also, those 797 capsules are the older CY032 variety, right? Judging from the flathead screws. Cheers, and keep up the great work.
I liked 2 to
Two too it is.

Have you considered trying a different capsule with this PCB? I plan on trying this once all the parts come in. Trying the k67 and k47 type capsules from JLI. Think it would be fun for you and cool for us to watch
I have considered it, but I haven’t yet gotten far enough with my current experiments to pivot yet, but it’s a really good idea.
Thanks for all these DIY 87 videos, very instructive and fun! Are those capsule mounts made by yourself or can it be purchased somewhere? 3d printed?
I 3d print them myself. You can find .stl files for 3d printable mic capsule mounts online for free.
sorry for the interruption but having tried place oil film capacitor for 22nf and low esr capacitor for the picking region between 1200 & 1600 hz? i like third one
Thanks! Was that a question? If so, can you clarify?
The larger ones definitely sound better. What 797 capsules are you using in them?
Those were both pulled from old Studio Projects C1 mics.
You're. unplugging this mics like you're tearing their heads off. So mean!
That's probably an unfortunate byproduct of the summer I spent doing goat circumcisions.
