My parents were very white and very conservative. One thing they were not was racist. We lived in a mixed neighborhood and they never had any comments, much less complaints, about my black and asian friends who were my best friends. As far as I remember, they never showed prejudice. My first girlfriend even was asian. I guess I was lucky. It wasn't till I went to college that I learned about racial problems.

Sure it's easy to say that people should forget past offenses because they are long gone, but when similar things happen now, are you going to ask the same? Sure, it's no slavery, but there is still persecution and discrimination, even if you use other name to call it

And even then, it doesn't undo the harm you did, it just allows you to have a starting point to heal. Saying "I didn't do this" ignores the fact that we, (as white people with American roots) benefit from the history of racism in this country.

They were white southerners, and absolutely they benefitted from slavery and Jim Crow. As their descendant, I benefit from that, even if it is passive. I also enjoy privilege now as a white person, despite not always being aware of it.
I think any time you discuss ethics, especially in issues that stretch generations, when asking who should pay to repair something, you have to ask who has the most responsibility for the problem at hand and who is best able to pay to repair it. I am not wealthy, so I am not able to pay much as an individual, but as a country, we are quite wealthy, and this wealth disproportionately goes to a small percentage of white people because you make more with property than you do with labor over the long term and they're taxed differently, etc...White Americans also have the most responsibility when it comes to destroying trust with black Americans. It is unrealistic to expect the black community to come to us. We have to acknowledge the chronic disenfranchisement which has taken place over centuries in a way that makes up for the long term destructive consequences for that community. Otherwise, any talk about unity or equality is bs. They don't owe us anything, we built this country on their backs.

That's pretty ignorant to say that nobody wants to get over slavery than Black People.. first of all, as a Jew, our religious holidays are about our thousands of years in and out of slavery. Second of all, not every black person, just like not every white person, has their head in the right place. A lot of people obsess over the concept of their ancestors victimized and don't want to let it go because they have nothing else that excites them, others who are obsessed are just under-informed. Many people think that victimization is a benefit when it gives an excuse to ask for reparations and as an excuse to be a narcissist. I have met many narcissists of every race, including white people, who use "white supremacy" as a way to detach from the responsibility to treat others with respect. People use the concept of white supremacy to put others down, to get people fired, to humiliate people... it is 100% racist.
Donald Trump did condemn white supremacy many times... what do you suggest? hanging white people with racist ideas? Are racists allowed to vote? If you believe that they shouldn't have the right to vote, then is it only "white racists"? If the kkk eats breakfast, would you condemn breakfast to be a practice of white supremacy? black supremacists deserve the right to vote.... what if they voted for Biden? would you say that Biden condemns antifa? is Antifa actually anti-racist or only white canceling?
This guy Trevor Noah is either an idiot or keeps his ideas close-minded to keep his viewers consistent. This guy feeds off of people's resentment and breaking up the virtues of America. HELLO, people flee from racist countries... why are more minorities coming here if America is so racist? obviously, there is no such supremacy in America if minorities are pouring into this country. Trevor Noah is an extreme racist. Listen to David Harris Jr and Candace Owens instead... expand your horizon.

When Mr. Stevenson talked about the history of slavery it appeared to me as if he was also leaving out some important things. The myth of white supremacy is a strategy born in historical Europe to enslave the rest of the world and to justify the atrocities comming along with the expansion of European countries in the world.
Genocide and slavery were means to reach the goal of controling as much of the world as possible as a resource.
Many former colonialist nations - as for example Germany - deny this part of their history. Trying to silence the debate on white supremacy today is on the other hand a strategy to get rid of the responsibility that derives from history. Germany for instance has decided to take the holocaust as a guilt so it avoids talking about the Nama and the Herero. It's the same everywhere in white hegemonial societies it only wears different suits.

My grandmother (German) once described her first encounter with a Black man. He rode in a nice car through the streets and came to my great grandfather house (He was a doctor) He offered my then five year old grandmother a chocolate bar. She was absolutely horrified. Luckily her older brother acted more normal and accepted the bar. I find this story quite fascinating because It was her first encounter ever with a black person. I don't know if you can call a five year old racist but it still was a fearfull reaction. But I don't know what the guy did there. Her father fought in the war at the German side. I can't recall any Racist stories (exept fighting in WW2) of my familly. I also noticed that in the 14 years I go to my grandparents. I never saw a black person. In my city in Belgium we see a diverse group of people but in the place in Germany where I go it is all Caucasian and very white. I don't know why that is.

As a minority public school teacher, I believe this behavior is completely learned by children by the adults in their life and media they consume.
Representation matters. Almost 80% of public school teachers are white while less than 50% of students are white in this country now.
Over 40% of the students in my school are minorities while over 90% of teachers are white.
We need to increase representation with teachers in classrooms so children understand the cultures and different perspectives that minorities can bring to the table- that being “American” doesn’t mean you need to look a certain way.
I believe we need to use the education system more effectively to help shift mindsets for a brighter future.
I plan to increase representation in education using money from my TH-cam channel once I can monetize it. I just need 150 more subscribers and 1,300 hours of view time if you want to support me in this mission.

White supremacy is very real. I was recently stopped on December 26 2021 in Americus Ga. I admit that I was traveling about 9 miles over the posted speed limit. The State Trooper did a very aggressive Maneuver to U-turn to chase me down along with 3 other vehicles trailing behind me. He allowed everyone to slowly leave except me. The trooper approached my vehicle and we both greeted each other. I asked why I was being stopped? He replied you was going 11 miles over the speed limit. I said I was going 9 over the speed limit. That’s when everything took a turn. He stated I was going to give you a warning but you opened your mouth. He take my license and returned to his cruiser. and moments later arrived back to my vehicle stopping at the rear door saying Mr.Green could you step out the vehicle. I responded why if I’m only getting a ticket. He repeated himself more aggressively Mr. Green I’m asking you to step out of the vehicle. I was alone so no one else could do it for me. I stepped out of my vehicle asking why are you making me get out my vehicle on a busy highway. He replied for my safety. On the passenger side of my vehicle it was enough room for ten people to stand. I pointed that out but he didn’t respond. He said I’m trying to help you out here. I replied I’m not seeking help from him. He said we’ll go back to your vehicle and I’ll write you a few tickets. I said fine. We both returned to our vehicles. Shortly after another state trooper arrived on the scene. They had a few words and the same state trooper reproached my vehicle asking me to step out of the vehicle. I asked could I grab my cellphone and he replied sure. I was so nervous that I started recording and stopped recording simultaneously. I was alone so no one else could do it for me. One state trooper stood on the side of the cruiser by the driver tire while the other officer and I stood about 3-4 feet away from each other behind my vehicle. He said Mr.Green I need you to come stand right here (pointing right by his side) so I can serve you your situation. I said sir I’m close enough to you if I can extend my hand to take the situation from your hands. With the same aggressive tone as I described earlier he said Mr. Green I’m asking you to come stand right here (pointing right next to his side as stated before). I refused once again saying I have coronavirus. The state trooper replied where is your mask and I responded where are you guys masks. That ended the confrontation and I extended my arm took the situation signed it and returned it in the same manner. It was over and I returned to my car. My heart was raising because I feel the state trooper was trying to stage and plot to harm me if I took those few steps towards him when he attempted to try and get me to come close to him. I called and filed an complaint but the state trooper supervisor said he wasn’t wrong. Out of frustration I said well let him dare come near me again and hung Up the phone. I’ve been researching trying to find information matching what I’ve experienced to raise the issue before an innocent person is hurt. I think cops should defuse any situation instead of Escalade a situation. I’m a 39 year old African American and the two troopers were two middle age European Americans. Was I wrong for not remaining silent or was this taken to far over a simple speeding ticket?

I don't have kids yet (so please take with a grain of salt, or box of salt) but I think an easy way is the community approach. Sit down with friends and neighbors (and their kids) of different races and talk about it. This is all contingent on you living in a place that's diverse though. Chip and Joanna Gaines did an episode of "uncomfortable conversations with a black man" with their children and I feel the result was very successful. The episode is on TH-cam if you're curious. Whatever you decide to do, you're an excellent parent just for being worried about what to say. There's alot of parents that leave their children to draw their own conclusions. And with the way tv and media is these days, that's very dangerous.

Her stepfather tried telling her she could never walk with the black boy again. You have no idea how hard I flew off the handle. It was almost our first fight. But it was so one sided he couldn't get a word in. I hadn't known my (now) ex had an issue. After my blow out I had to explain to my daughter why what her stepfather said was so wrong. And made sure she knew that she had done nothing wrong. More in depth conversations came as she got older.

I am grateful for your discussion on race. It is so important that we can discuss this without getting into arguments that prevent us from listening to each other. We have to be able to hear the stories of various minorities and understand them. Let's remember that during this pandemic how many Asians and Pacific Islanders have suffered from the germaphobic racism manifest by terms like the China Flu or other similar comments and this has led to an escalation in violence against these groups. When we see racism, especially if we are white, we have to stand up and speak out against it. This is such an embedded attitude among white people.
