      @@NowSpinningMagazine You're a great addition Phil. I just want to add that I'm with you and Pete when it comes to the Bill Ward albums. I heard the first two a long time ago but stumbled on "Accountable Beasts" maybe a month or so ago. Sabbath are my favorite band and Bill is in my top 3 drummers, but after hearing AB, I was taken back by how off the wall the material was (and not in a good way) I was seriously laughing the entire way through it. I'm glad we all have different opinions, but I can't help but think Martin might be only a handful of people on the planet that would pick Bill Wards solo albums over Ozzy's material (or even Iommi's)😂

    I remember when "Iommi" came out, one of my friends commented that he was inspired by Santana by having each song have a star vocalist (which was true). That album is ok, but I love the song, "Meat" sung by Skin. Very powerful and original. It made me wonder why more bands didn't have female vocalists at the time. Imagine if Black Sabbath had one in the 90's.

      IOMMI was the solo project that Tony Iommi always intended to record back from the 7th Star Black Sabbath featuring Tony Iommi's first attempt to record with different vocalist including Ronnie James Dio, David Coverdale, Rob Halford, Glenn Hughes and Robert Plant but due to W.B. record company was unable to get the singers because of recording conflicts.

      @perpetualmotion357 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. Blizzard through No More Tears before his first retirement is by far the best period of Ozzy (solo), and just has that certain sound which he never captured again even though none of those first 6 albums really sound like each other. Ozzmosis has some good songs here and there but that's when I feel it started to go downhill. Everything post 2000 just doesn't sound unique and kind of generic.

    I'd rank them like
    1. Dio (very consistent and holds up today, and alot of albums passed over like strange highways, magica and lock up the wolves are getting new fans, Dio's catalog cement his legacy as a landmark catalog within the genre)
    2. Ozzy (great talented musicians and well written but sounds dated and some albums are awful, people will remember Ozzy for Ozzy and sabbath and not his solo catalog)
    3. Tony Martin/The Cage/Giuntini Project (some solid stuff here, overlooked for sure)
    4. iommi (very limited, but what we got is great, wish we could get more glenn and iommi)
    5. Geezer (he always found it hard to get the ball rolling, I like the late 80s and early 90s stuff, almost very queensryche kinda stuff but it lost me with GZR, perhaps trying to hard)
    6. Bill (good albums but nothing really special, kinda forgettable)

    @michaeleaster1815 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    35:55 Yes, but it was more than "Ozzy fans didn't complain". Ozzy was a king-maker for guitar players. He found Randy which was huge, and then the buzz for "the next one" to be appointed to the prestigious position was enormous (as was the pressure), at least for Jake and Zakk (and arguably Gus G). And though he had a team, I think it was ultimately Ozzy who had the eye/ear for talent. He mentioned circa 1983 that guys would come to auditions and be "like Van Halen on acid" (possibly Michael Angelo Batio). He knew what he wanted.

    • @michaeleaster1815
      @michaeleaster1815 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a studio album, but shout-out to Ozzy's "Tribute" with Randy. For guitar players, it is a gold mine. 2x platinum in the USA. I remember, to a lesser degree, that being Dio's guitar player was a famous post, but _nothing_ like being with Ozzy. IMHO, Jake and Zakk show that it was no fluke (in terms of picking talent) but bringing Randy on-board is enough to be #1.

    Apart from Sabbath, where I enjoyed how they began to get more progressive with their writing starting with Vol-4 and peaking imo with Sabotage (I think TE and NSD have some gems, but they were getting a little too far off the mark for me) I've always thought Ozzy's solo material was better when he sounded more hard rockish, like in the Rhoads years and through the 80's up to No More Tears. That brighter sound that was dripping with unforgettable melodies. Even though I like Ozzmosis, I find that album to be where the cracks started to show and where the heavy commercial formula took root.
    I really liked Zakk's stuff on NRFTW and NMT before he turned into the Viking biker guy. I actually think Ozzy's solo stuff started to morph into what Zakk would write for a BLS album who I've never been a huge fan of. Even the material Zakk didn't write for him in the last 20 years still suffered from the "paint by numbers metal" that affected Ozzy as a whole starting in the mid 90's. There are some killer songs that pop up here and there, like his Iommi collaboration or Slash's. I've said for the longest time that I prefer the hard rockin Ozzy over the sludgy metal Ozzy that he started to lean toward (not counting the doom material with Sabbath)
    There's a reason 80 percent of the Rhoads material stayed on his setlist for the last 40 years.

His lead singer was a local boy (Worcester, MA) and I got to see them play this tiny metal club (Sir Morgan's Cove). It was a good show, but weird to see this sort of young, hip-hop looking guy sing doomy industrial metal with old man Geezer.

    Holy shnikey Martin! I can not believe how right you are about the Bill Ward material. It is down right scary how music of this calibre is completely invisible while waves of artistic dross have washed over us week after week in the intervening years.

    I'm with Martin on the Bill Ward albums (he may have even been the one to turn me on to them). I loved them immediately. The first especially, but the second is spectacular as well. Now for the third, Accountable Beasts, it didn't really click with me. But since I do actually have a physical copy of it (it may be unofficial) I'm going to revisit it on Popoff's advice.

    Great conversation! I actually saw Geezer on tour opening for Bruce Dickinson in in a small club in1997. While it was great to him him live, I really didn't connect with the musical style of his band.

    There's this beautiful song on the album Skyline Called Done. About a guy who had it and lost it and now sits at the bar and looks at the door, it's a sad song bu it kind of hits in the the gut and makes you feel regret and sorrow, Phil has point this type of song does not belong in Rock or Metal. I do like his voice.

    For a six months or more I've been meaning to see what Martin's been talking about with Bill Ward. Doing it right now and I'm totally on board. Very unique and creative. No, it's not Sabbath, but I'm glad it's not. Can't believe the guitarist/writer Keith Lynch didn't do anything else.

    You guys need to listen to Martin when he waxes poetic about the immortal Bill Ward albums...take some time and really check those records out... especially Ward One which is an absolute masterpiece....
    Oh and a side note: Tell Martin that Accountable Beasts did indeed have a very limited run of physical cd's that were available for a very short time on his website....I was lucky enough to acquire one which sits proudly in my collection...pretty sure it was a very limited amount....

    Because of the earlier Ozzy classics and because I'm such a fan, that's my number one. But I'm with Martin on the love for Bill Ward and his albums. Ward One: Along the Way, and When the Bough Breaks are classics for me. I came to the realization that, for me, his music had captured the feel and spirit of the original Black Sabbath (although some of it hardly sounds like them) whereas sooo much of Ozzy's later work did not. It sounded by the numbers and as if he was just a puppet for whoever was choosing the musical direction at the time.

    I have been following Pophoff for a number of years now and have bought some of his books on ebay. His knowledge of music (statistics) is clearly undisputed, as is his personal insight through the many interviews with all musicians. And that every music lover has different favorites and tastes is quite normal. Since I myself have loved rock/hard rock/heavy rock/metal since 1976, owned 5000+ albums/cds, seen 400+ shows and been able to meet many of my idols, I often cannot agree at all with Pophoff's taste in music and assessments. Maybe he has a clue about punk or something similar, but probably not about "my" music.

    I have a soft spot for Seventh Star but its not a great album at all, I actually like the softie the best. This all proves that as a whole they're great, but the parts on their own aren't great except for Ozzy. He has such a recognizable voice that he is the main driver of the band. Even the Dio albums sound like Dio solo albums and could have any players on them.

    The Dio catalogue would be by far my number one ahead of Ozzy. Then again my top 2 Sabbath albums are the Dio ones.
    Question for Phil , I always get the impression Born again is given a lot more respect by Pete and the Hudson squares than it was ever given in the UK were I always felt at the time it was treated as a bit of a joke album, and never taken seriously would he agree ?

    I'm a big fan of Rock/Metal instrumental music as well as vocal, and I found if one removes the vocal tracks (there are digital tools to do this) from some of Iommi's solo and so-called Sabbath albums after Mob Rules, they improve greatly.
    No disrespect to Tony Martin, Ian Gillan, Glenn Hughes or any of those other solid and decent singers that sang alongside Iommi, but I find his playing so often very lyrical that it almost doesn't need a singer over it. This is especially true of The Eternal Idol, Seventh Star, Forbidden, Born Again, and TYR.
    I wish Tony Iommi would simply put out instrumental albums at this point, ala Jeff Beck and Joe Satriani. Hire a crackerjack bass player (is Geezer available?) and a Cozy Powell like drummer (or Bill Ward in my dreams, if he can physically do it), and crank out some albums from his home studio. You know Iommi has stashed hundreds of great riffs in cold storage over the years and also more waiting in his fingers.

    I don't see Iommi as a novelty album at all. What I hear is how well Iommi's style blends with very different types of vocalists. I particularly love the collaboration with Billy Idol at the end.

    My ranking: #1 = Tony IOMMI....waaay up there with his Glenn Hughes collaborations (Seventh Star, Dep Sessions & Fused)
    #2 = OZZY re Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman, and Bark at the Moon. After that he lost me.
    #3 = Geezer....I had his 2005 industrial sounding album...didn't like it, gave it away.
    #4 = Bill Ward.....can't comment....haven't heard his stuff.

    I really enjoyed this episode. Ozzy would be my number one, followed by Bill Ward, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler. Could never get into Geezer’s stuff….I guess it is just not my kind of heavy metal. I’m not too big on Iommi’s albums as well. Just not enough melody and variety. I love Ward One: Along The Way. I didn’t expect it to sound that good. I definitely think it was much better than what Black Sabbath were doing at the time.

    Ozzy by a million miles...Bill Ward in 2nd place also by a million miles (When the Bough Breaks & Ward One. Along The Way are very good, Accountable Beasts & Living Naked are OK), Iommi (some decent work with Ian Gillan & Glenn Hughes) & Butler (cookie monster vocals😒) solo don't do much for me - not counting Heaven And Hell (Sweden Rock Festival 2007 & Radio City - Music Hall are bruisers)

    Add me to the chorus of people who love Iommi's work with Glenn Hughes. The DEP Sessions and Fused are amazing albums, and I always object to Martin's use of the term "plodding". There's a huge difference between a slower tempo and a low energy song.
    I wanted to love Geezer's catalog, but I don't. I was never a Fear Factory fan, either.
    Never heard Bill's solo albums. They're on the list.

    Again played once very disappointed but its Sabbath so curse of collector.
    Ozzy solo stuff unfortunately left me cold most of the time odd song or two.

    Man in a Suitcase is a great Geezer song. Remember listen a lot to that album from 97 back then. Not so much the last 20-25 years. I guess it is only the Ozzy albums I really love here. That mean the 6 albums from Blizzard to Ozz to No more Tears. After that I lost interest.
