I'll say, one of the best first time watches for me this year was The Young Girls of Rochefort. In fact I loved watching it so much that I've watched it 3 times this year alone. I think it's an astounding musical, great music, great dancing and gorgeous colours, I honestly kept smiling throughout.

Just two days ago I've watched 28 Days Later and ever since then I couldn't stop thinking about it and the fact that I've been missing out for so long. The direction, the soundtrack, the Canon XL-1 look, it's all so ALIVE. Made me start saving up for a camcorder, I've got my eyes set on the Canon for around 200 bucks

Amazing films I saw for the first time this year: It's a Wonderful Life Le Bonheur Cries and Whispers Underground A Summer's Tale Gimme Shelter Full Time Michael Clayton Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf Two Lovers We Own the Night
Saw Underground for the first time a couple of years ago and it blew my mind in such a good way. 🫶🏽 Also really loved Le Bonheur, but then Agnès Varda is one of my favorite people ever.
Godzilla Minus One became one of my all time favorite movies after the re-release in theaters. Just reminded me how good it was. Also Interstellar Re-release. I went to the IMAX in Moore, Oklahoma to watch it and the 1.43:1 aspect ratio blew me away. I had no idea how good it would look in the taller aspect ratio. The outside shots of the space ship, the water planet, the ice planet, just wow! And of course the Christopher Nolan IMAX audio complete with one of the best soundtracks in film. Absolutely cemented itself as one of my favorite movies.
My Favorite First Time watches this year Ritual (2000) Make Way for Tomorrow Cutie Honey Bound Hellzapoppin’ House (1977) The End of Evangelion Do the Right Thing The Celebration Singin’ in the Rain A Matter of Life and Death Paths of Glory Drunken Master II The Hunchback of Notre Dame The Fog Bo Burnham: Inside Creature From the Black Lagoon Love on a Leash Bloody Chainsaw Girl Bloody Muscle Bodybuilder in Hell
Great list. I've also just done my own favourite first watches of the year. Lots of my favourites here. Point Blank is in my favourite 100 of all time and my fifth favourite film of the 60s. Battle of Algiers is also one of my favourites. Jesse James is my favourite film of 2007. Great vid, as always 👍.
Here’s a weird fact: the narrator in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is the same narrator for the sort of bad Blake Lively movie Age of Adaline. Only 2 movies that man has narrated.
finally got around to watching the fall the other night and can’t believe i had been putting it off for a couple years. absolutelyyyy underrated beautifully constructed movie and im devastated i missed seeing it on the big screen during the theatrical re-release this past fall
My best first watches this year: Bullet in the Head 1990 My Sons 1991 School on Fire 1988 A Chinese Ghost Story II 1990 Viva Erotica 1996 The Captain from Kopenick 1956 Only Angels Have Wings 1939 The Lady Hermit 1971 The Black Tavern 1972 In Those Days 1947 Seven Weeks 2014 Following the Sun 1961 Like a Savage 1985 The Rest Is Silence 1959 Journey to the West 2021
My top ten first watches of the year: Goodbye, Dragon Inn Querelle Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls Tropical Malady Portrait Of A Lady On Fire What's Up Doc? Le Bonheur Vertigo Cowards Bend The Knee Network
some big hitters that i finally got around to this year and loved: the french connection lawrence of arabia tampopo seventh seal bridge on the river kwai notorious joint security area the apartment sunset boulevard the big films at least. lots of martial arts movies too pretty standard for my movie taste
Ayy I watched notorious for the first time a couple days ago. The scene near the end when she gets poisoned almost made me throw up the camera work was so nauseating. Cool movie
This year I finally got over my mental block of ignoring movies made before 1980, so my favorite first watches were: -Charade -What a Way to Go! -Bringing Up Baby -The Red Shoes -Grand Prix -His Girl Friday -What’s Up Doc? -Vanishing Point
I watched Happy-Go-Lucky way back in January and The Assassination of Jesse James in February (at the same screening as Karsten, actually) and those two have continued to stick out as my two favorite first watches of the year
badlands beats days of heaven, but close- and sam shepard, is amazing. point blank classic! battle of algiers was the first reportage style, people thought it was a documentary. the conversation had the 70s vibe of government surveillance (they thought he did it as a statement on the nixon tapes but the timing didn't work- pure coincidence) it was my first watching of rififi this year, why did I wait. I love your work (are you in west Hollywood? i lived in malibu, 5 houses down from the house Ye destroyed)
I was definitely blood thirsty this year cus despite being a scaredy cat, I've watched so many revenge theme films this year. From Furiosa, to classics like Confessions and I Saw the Devil. It's What Inside was also a pretty fun flick. Also my country's biggest win😂, Ong Bak 1, definitely saw how John Wick took inspiration from it. I think how each culture explore revenge really says a lot about how we each see justice or what would inflict the most pain. Confessions takes the crown for me in terms of most satisfying one.
My "Favorite First-Time Watches of 2024" (ordered by release year): Sherlock Jr. (1924) High and Low (1963) Daisies (1966) Airport (1970) The Spirit of the Beehive (1973) Ali: Fear Eat the Soul (1974) The Irony of Fate (1975) Possession (1981) Eve's Bayou (1997) Beau Travail (1999) Under the Shadow (2016) Bad Genius (2017) Suzume (2022) Hundreds of Beavers (2024) I Saw the TV Glow (2024) The Substance (2024)
My favorite first watches of 2024 were: Phantom of the Paradise (1974) Poor Things (2023) Love Exposure (2009) But I'm a Cheerleader (1999) And while it wasn't a first watch, I got the see Inception (2010) in theaters for the first time and it was a great experience.
I have over 80 first time watches this year, some of them are from last year while others are from years ago. My favorite of the slightly older ones are Taxi Driver Lawrence of Arabia The social network The how to train your dragon trilogy The aviator The departed Beetlejuice Tropic Thunder The Martian Edward scissorhands My cousin Vinny (I have so many that I did not list)
Also saw lady snowblood and cure this year, the latter being far more of a transcendent experience, but also saw some classics like the graduate and Casablanca which hold up. Got 1,004 more movies to go on my watchlist 💀
Favorite Movies seen for the first time this year The Thing The Shining Carrie Climax Hereditary Videodrome Ginger Snaps Past Lives Roman Holiday May December Aftersun In the Mood for Love It's Such A Beautiful Day Inglorious Basterds Del Toros Pinocchio Pacific Rim When the Wind Rises The Innocents

I will always stand by Malcolm X being the best biopic ever made. It legit changed the way I lived my life (going down Malcolm's writings and autobiography), and I don't think many films can say they've done that for me. (Can never stop gushing about it lol).
My favourite first watches Bojack Horseman Prick up your ears Poor things All of us strangers Testar: The Joe Meek story NCIS Baby Reindeer Poirot Scarlet Street I am not okay with this King Kong (2005) Fallout Lost boys & Fairies Horizon A good girl's guide to murder Alien 3 Normal People San Andreas Boys don't cry ABC Afternoon Specials- Wanted the perfect guy Outer Banks Monsters A day at the beach & finally Twin Peaks
Best first watches for me:- • The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - _One of the best genre films out there. No wonder it won the 5 big Oscars._ • I Saw the Devil (2010) - _Brilliant revenge film from director Kim Jee Woon. Not for the faint of heart tho._ • Logan (2017) - _Had this one on my watchlist for a while and having finally seen it, it definitely lived up to the expectations._ • Speed (1994) - _Such an energetic premise for an action film. Had a great time._ • Black Swan (2010) - _Incredible performance and a well deserved win by Natalie Portman. It does have alot of visual and narrative similarities to Perfect Blue and although not quite on that level, I do think Black Swan is a very good movie on its own. It does suck that Aronofsky refuses to acknowledge the inspiration he took from Satoshi Kon's work._ • (500) Days of Summer (2009) - _Very relatable depiction of first love and heartbreak with great editing and performances. A pleasant surprise._ Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) - _I watched all the Mad Max movies for the first time this year and needless to say I really enjoy this franchise. Fury Road in particular stood out to me the most (as well as Road Warrior, Furiosa was great as well). The stunt work is absolutely jaw dropping, the visuals are vibrant and it also has a great emotional core. A perfect action film from beginning to end._ The Vengeance trilogy (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and Lady Vengeance) - _Another set of films on my watchlist that I finally caught up on. Park Chan-wook's Vengeance trilogy is a must watch for any and every film buff. My favorite of the bunch is Oldboy to no one's surprise. The third act of Oldboy is one of the most insane things I've ever seen. Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is an incredibly bleak film although very different from Oldboy. Lady Vengeance is also so good, definitely the slickest of the trilogy and has a surprising holiday feel to it. All in all a great watch that I'll be revisiting soon enough._ I also watched all of Satoshi Kon's films for the first time this year (aside from Tokyo Godfathers which I've already seen thrice before) and I'm left with complete awe of the sheer talent and vision this man had. All 4 of his films and the TV show he directed Paranoia Agent are incredible to say the least. His films are also some of the best edited I've ever seen. I simply can't recommend his filmography enough. RIP to this great man. Even 14 years later it makes me so sad that I'll never get to see anything from this man ever again. Its also part of the reason why it took me so long to watch all of his works. In reality I just didn't wanted to finish but all good things must end right? Also, I caught up on a lot of movies that I missed last year. My favorites include The Holdovers, Godzilla Minus One, Killers of the Flower Moon and The Boy and the Heron.
I’m sorry man but your take on “High Noon” is way off the mark. It’s not just another western, and is easily one of the greatest. A film that tackles the McCarthy era paranoia of the time in a masterful way. I recommend giving it another watch sometime soon, and read a bit more about the production history to get an idea of its importance.
I hate to defend the K-man, but High Noon is about as good as Shane... which is to say that it is amongst the most basic, normie -level westerns ever made. To defend High Noon is to defend blandness and mediocrity. It tackles the McCarthy era paranoia, eh? Why does that make his opinion invalid? LOL Also, if you respond, please include your top 100 westerns to prove that I should bother to take you seriously. I would offer you my top 100, but think how it might look... me talking to a High Noon fan? Perish the thought

It's a Wonderful Life
Le Bonheur
Cries and Whispers
Underground
A Summer's Tale
Gimme Shelter
Full Time
Michael Clayton
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf
Two Lovers
We Own the Night
Saw Underground for the first time a couple of years ago and it blew my mind in such a good way. 🫶🏽 Also really loved Le Bonheur, but then Agnès Varda is one of my favorite people ever.
Mine was Mysterious Skin
Godzilla Minus One became one of my all time favorite movies after the re-release in theaters. Just reminded me how good it was.
Also Interstellar Re-release. I went to the IMAX in Moore, Oklahoma to watch it and the 1.43:1 aspect ratio blew me away. I had no idea how good it would look in the taller aspect ratio. The outside shots of the space ship, the water planet, the ice planet, just wow! And of course the Christopher Nolan IMAX audio complete with one of the best soundtracks in film. Absolutely cemented itself as one of my favorite movies.

It’s a Wonderful Life
Babylon
Superman
The Holdovers
The Shining
These are the ones that jump out to me :D
Here’s a weird fact: the narrator in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is the same narrator for the sort of bad Blake Lively movie Age of Adaline. Only 2 movies that man has narrated.
finally got around to watching the fall the other night and can’t believe i had been putting it off for a couple years. absolutelyyyy underrated beautifully constructed movie and im devastated i missed seeing it on the big screen during the theatrical re-release this past fall

the french connection
lawrence of arabia
tampopo
seventh seal
bridge on the river kwai
notorious
joint security area
the apartment
sunset boulevard
the big films at least. lots of martial arts movies too pretty standard for my movie taste
Ayy I watched notorious for the first time a couple days ago. The scene near the end when she gets poisoned almost made me throw up the camera work was so nauseating. Cool movie
@ oh man, that finally shot is one of hitchcock’s all timers
Tampopo is such an endlessly rewatchable and fun movie! 😍
@ watching the egg scene for the first time was crazy LOL
This year I finally got over my mental block of ignoring movies made before 1980, so my favorite first watches were:
-Charade
-What a Way to Go!
-Bringing Up Baby
-The Red Shoes
-Grand Prix
-His Girl Friday
-What’s Up Doc?
Confessions takes the crown for me in terms of most satisfying one.
highly recommend grapes of wrath, definitely my favourite john ford movie and surprisingly lynchy imo
Let the Right One In and Singin' in the Rain are now in my top 4 after being first watches this year so gotta be those
Literally when the poster for The Conversation popped up I thought, “that might be the best Coppola film.”

The departed
Beetlejuice
Tropic Thunder
The Martian
Edward scissorhands
My cousin Vinny
(I have so many that I did not list)
it’s got to be a tie between Mishima and Q*eer. I just became completely engrossed into both films so deeply, and they moved me.
Kurosawa's dreams is my favorite first watch of the year and it's in my top 3 of all time now what a fucking movie, the PEACH ORCHARD 😭😭
- Our Little Sister
- Y Tu Mamá También
- Snow Flower and the Secret Fan
Was an honor to meet you at the Jesse James screening

Ex Machina was my #1 first watch this year fs
Not only Lady Snowblood but also Harakiri inspired Kill Bill
Moulin rouge surprised me and I'm sad for younger me that I didn't see it sooner!
Unbreakable (2000). It's time.
I will always stand by Malcolm X being the best biopic ever made. It legit changed the way I lived my life (going down Malcolm's writings and autobiography), and I don't think many films can say they've done that for me. (Can never stop gushing about it lol).
I watched Brief Encounter (1945) back in the Summer, and it was so devastating I might never watch it again.
I think my favorite first watches this year were Sorcerer by William Friedkin and Stalker

& finally Twin Peaks
Ghost in the shell is still my favorite movie of all time.
My favorite is probably Phantom of the Paradise, but the best is City of God
My favorite first watch this year was Sex, Lies, and Videotape,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, literally changed my life
Best first watches for me:-
• The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - _One of the best genre films out there. No wonder it won the 5 big Oscars._
• I Saw the Devil (2010) - _Brilliant revenge film from director Kim Jee Woon. Not for the faint of heart tho._
• Logan (2017) - _Had this one on my watchlist for a while and having finally seen it, it definitely lived up to the expectations._
• Speed (1994) - _Such an energetic premise for an action film. Had a great time._
• Black Swan (2010) - _Incredible performance and a well deserved win by Natalie Portman. It does have alot of visual and narrative similarities to Perfect Blue and although not quite on that level, I do think Black Swan is a very good movie on its own. It does suck that Aronofsky refuses to acknowledge the inspiration he took from Satoshi Kon's work._
• (500) Days of Summer (2009) - _Very relatable depiction of first love and heartbreak with great editing and performances. A pleasant surprise._
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) - _I watched all the Mad Max movies for the first time this year and needless to say I really enjoy this franchise. Fury Road in particular stood out to me the most (as well as Road Warrior, Furiosa was great as well). The stunt work is absolutely jaw dropping, the visuals are vibrant and it also has a great emotional core. A perfect action film from beginning to end._
The Vengeance trilogy (Sympathy for Mr. All in all a great watch that I'll be revisiting soon enough._
I also watched all of Satoshi Kon's films for the first time this year (aside from Tokyo Godfathers which I've already seen thrice before) and I'm left with complete awe of the sheer talent and vision this man had.
Kursten do you ever watch action movies? I know you saw and liked Mad Max: Fury Road but have you seen any others like The Raid, John Wick etc.
La La Land, Mulholland Drive, The Wild Robot
I went on a first date to see Breaking the Waves. We didn't see each other again....
It's nuts that people in America go on their phones in the theatre
