“I wonder how peope received this.” Keaton is very much considered THE BATMAN and this is THE JOKER. Many pick Michael Keaton over Christian Bale. it’s considered a classic. And the second Batman movie with catwoman is also beloved.
Fans at the time were furious about casting Michael Keaton. Had to write letters to the studio because they didn't have internet.
@@gridlo really that’s so interesting. This came out before I was born but my older brother grew up with the movies and he would tell us about how much people loved it. He would have been in middle school so that makes sense that he wouldn’t have known about the anger

Batman 89 was an absolute phenomenon, it was huge culturally. And that might be an understatement.

Not to take away from Heath Ledger, but I love Jack’s Joker so much. He is my fav. He just comes across as an actual crazy clown to me. I love the joy buzzers and the laughing gas. He’s also so quotable!

And don’t let anyone deter you, all 4 of the Batman films are really fun. You’ll have a good time with each. I miss the charm and chemistry of the older Batman films. The score, the lighting, and sexual tension is perfect. They are just pure popcorn spectacle.
Just bare in mind that only the first two are directed by Tim Burton and starring Michael Keaton. The Style changes drastically after that, but yet, they're cool and fun in their own way.

This might sound really weird somehow but I DO miss back in 80/90's movies when actors had their real teeth? Today every actor has blinding white teeth or veneers, it takes me out of the movie sometimes. So when you commented about the guys teeth I was like "see! It added something to his character!!".
I’m an oldhead, so I remember getting this movie on VHS 📼 from my older cousin & wearing it out!! 🤣 My mom was also obsessed because the ENTIRE soundtrack was done by PRINCE. It’s a time capsule for sure, but it’s aesthetically insane & creative.

In my opinion, this was the best Batman Movie made. I just wish they had kept this model for movies going instead of the next two which were bleh/meh.

Keaton was Bruce in this movie and the sequel, Batman Returns. When Keaton was announced as Batman, comic fans weren't happy. He was mainly a comedy actor, in movies like Mr. Mom.
Basically, he was treated for Batman the way Ledger was treated when he was announced as Joker.
You gotta keep in mind, this was 1989.
When Keaton was announced that he was going to be Batman, there was a lot of backlash, cause he was mostly a comedy actor before this. After it came out, this was THE BATMAN. It was huge.
Glad you enjoyed it Mike. I’ve been waiting for this one for a while haha. Tim Burton’s version of Batman and Gotham is was one of my favorite aesthetics out of all Batman movies. Is super gothic and very comic book style. Michael Keaton’s Bruce is….a little weird. But I still like he does his own thing with it. (Apparently Bruce Wayne net worth is around 9.2 billion dollars. No wonder This dude has can afford all this shit haha) And jack Nicholson’s joker is still great. A little goofy but still good haha. I enjoy the video. Stay cool Mike. Keaton is much more the definitive Bruce Wayne in the sequel, I think. He's still kind of goofy, but more in an 'I'm a rich loner; of COURSE I'm a little weird' kind of way. Plus, his costume and gadgets and everything have gotten an upgrade, so he's a considerable improvement as Batman, as well.
Batman and The Joker are the ultimate tandem. Do dare and change my mind about this.
Yes please watch batman returns.. more serious take.. which studio ended up pissed about.. funny cause now batman is super serious lol. But michelle as catwoman is perfection! And i was born in 1981.. saw this batman at the drive in when i was 8.. this is my batman!! And returns is even in my opinion

This was the first real post adam west batman. This incarnation was the one i saw at 11. This and returns are my two favorite. I wish they let burton do the third with billy dee as two face. I like most ( batman forever and batman and robin were meh ) of them and just like the comics, the arcs were different but great. Burtons is old noir style which i liked since i was young.

It's an animated movie with legendary voice actors ( including Mark Hamill aka Luke Skywalker as the Joker ) . It is considered one of the best Batman movies of all time. Would be really cool if you checked it out

im 39. when this came out it was fuckinnnnnn amaaazing people my age will all agree michael keaton is batman and jack is the joker and the second one with penguin.. danny devito is penguin period.. to hear u feel that these characters dont give u authentic vibes of their characters hurts my heart bc this is where it all started for us i know there was much older batman with adam west and shit but as far as the revised "newer" batman gotham city world goes this movie and the next are everything.. pure cheesy but amazing "comic book" energy authenticity🤌

The movie was a cultural phenomenon. It was literally everywhere in the summer of 1989. It made $411 million dollars, which was, of course, the highest-grossing movie of the year. That box office is equivalent to about $1.039 billion today. It was huge.
You've said that you don't quite buy Keaton as Bruce Wayne, but Tim Burton said that in choosing Keaton, he was casting Bruce Wayne and not Batman. After all, anyone can put on the suit in a movie and be the character.
How people recieved it? The Bat logo of "The Burtonverse" is one of the symbols of the 90s. Almost every kid back then had some merch with the bat logo on it. This is a cult classic and is actually the first of that type "superhero movies" and put that genre on the map. And not only that Keaton is THE Batman, but Michelle Pfeiffer is THE ONLY Catwoman. You will be surprised how much crazier is the next one - "Batman Returns" and even more surprised how many people considerd it their favorite and the best Batman movie ever. I'm one of those weird people too :}

I saw this movie 5x in the theaters as a 10 year old, I was obsessed with this movie. I bought posters, tshirts, action figures, any merchandise that came from this movie. As cheesy as it is now it still kinda holds up.
Micheal Keaton was a better Batman than Bruce

The whole point of the awkward Bruce Wayne personality is, because it's an extreme opposite of Batman, which enhances his alias, nobody would suspect Him because hes such an odd person

A lot of fans were against Keaton as Batman and they wrote letters to complain to the studio. The studio hurried up and dropped a trailer and people went crazy. A lot went to buy tickets to movies just to see the trailer. Then the movie broke records and is still up there as a success even by today standards and inflation considered. The logo was everywere, tattoos, haircuts with batman logo, cereal boxes, etc. Merch up the roof.

The suit was very restrictive and greatly limited what the actor could do in fight scenes. He couldn't even turn his head.

I hate how we rarely see Batman's compassion and empathy in live action. Thanks to the movies people think Batman is a rich guy that beats up the mentally ill. But real Batman fans know that Batman is one of the most compassionate and empathetic heroes around. There's a line by Amanda Waller that perfectly sums up Batman's character and it's "And for all that fierce exterior, I've never met anyone who cared as deeply for his fellow man as Bruce Wayne".
