Evidently, you have never read the actual book. Christine is TERRIFIED of the phantom, and feels sorry for him, but she's not in love with him. I hate that so many girls try nowadays try to act like "oh, she really wants him, she's just PRETENDING to be deathly afraid of him throughout the entire story". The whole point of the story is he's an isolated, hideous creature whose only positive traits are music and magic tricks. At the end he realizes to love her means to release her
OperaSpider actually, the end proves that the phantom was a good person deep down because he let Christine go. And if you watch the sequel, in 'Beneath a Moonless Sky' Christine says that she did love the phantom
ALW took inspiration but his purpose was for this to be a love story through and through. the original story, christine does not love him but ALW, as he did many other details, changed that to fit his own story. like how the deformity is on one side of the face and not the entire face or how some noteable characters were left out of the musical
Um no offense but the book has nothing to do with this. The musical is an adaption, meaning it doesnt have to be the same as the book.Whether Christine loves or has feelings for Erik is ambiguous in the play. Oh and no one gives 3 rat fucks about the supposed epic love story between Raoul and Christine, thats not why people watch the show, they watch it for The Phantom and his story with Christine.
It hurts my heart to see so many people not appreciating Marcus' take on Erik, because I find him absolutely outstanding. I had the luck to see him and Anna last summer and I was moved to tears. My impression is that he played the Phantom with a sense of sadness and self-loathing, somehow tired and resigned. He is not Ramin Karimloo, no comparison is possible when their takes are so different. As much as I love Ramin, who was my first Phantom, I think "my" Phantom is now Marcus... just like Anna will always be my Christine. Thank you so much for sharing this!
I am thrilled to see some postive feedback towards these wonderful talents. Thank you for that. I must confess though you have made me a tiny bit envious since you were able to see them live. What I wouldn't give for that!
I don't understand how people can describe Christine as a diva in this scene. I think Anna played out this moment wonderfully. It felt sincere to me. She's angry and hurt by what the Phantom is doing to her. He's blackmailing her. You can't really expect her to say "Yes I'll marry you" after how he has decieved her. And I also see more then just pity. After performing in Love Never Dies, I wouldn't expect anything less from her sicne she loves both shows so much.
I would best describe Marcus Lovett's approach to the Phantom as "intellectual." He chose to make Erik less in touch with his emotions, and more stiff, which is a completely valid interpretation for a character who has lived in social isolation for so long, just one that is not conventionally done. Very interesting and unlike anything I have seen, and I love how each successive Phantom is different.
Whoops, a bit of veil trouble there, haha! That aside, what a wonderful, fresh take on the final scene! I've always maintained that no-one does that scene like Gina Beck, but Anna has just joined her - Gina is my favourite in the traditional scene, Anna is my new favourite for a fresh take. I love her acting in this - the way she says, "I gave my mind blindly", her bodily relief when the Phantom frees Raoul...well, everything, really. Those are just some of the highlights. I love Marcus' different take on it (though I admit, I couldn't help but laugh when Christine and Raoul left - he did look a bit like a five-year-old having a temper tantrum, but hey, nobody's perfect), and even Simon - I love when the Phantom lets them go, and for a moment, it's like Raoul has suddenly seen what Christine could see; almost like he's trying to figure him out, while poor Christine is just there pulling on his arm like, "Raoul, let's GO!" Such a fantastic scene from all three. I applaud them.
I have seen this portrayed so many times but this is the first time I have seen this version. ... I love Anna xx this made me cry x EXCELLENT acting to all of them x
I couldn't bring myself to use the term "best" however she has earned her place on my top ranking list. Along with the gorgeous Lisa Vroman, the angelic Rebecca Caine, the astonishing Elizabeth De Grazia, the divine Claire Lyon, the incredible Rebecca Luker, the spectacular Rebecca Pitcher, the phenomenal Sarah Brightman, the extraordinary Julia Udine and the exquisite Elizabeth Loyacano. Anna is the beautiful. :)
When she fell to the floor I flinched when she hit the floor :0 I swear though I could hear people crying in the background when she gave the ring back to him and I was crying when that happened :'( This is simply beautiful and I am so glad you shared it with everyone :)
PhantomFan1a i love the story , all the cast , did a good and the phantom so great acting , so did roual and christin , true from the original novel and so wow , amazing .i from malaysia name cynthia koh 2017
I think the ultimate emotion that Christine does feel though is pity?...though I agree to some extent with what you have said. She feels a mixture of love and compassion in my opinion :)
Thanks for uploading! I like Marcus Lovett's characterisation in that it's quite close to the way the Phantom is in Gaston Leroux's book. However, he sounds vocally underpowered, and uses 'parlando' (ie speaks his lines rather than sings them) in a couple of places. Anna O'Byrne has the fury as well as the compassion of the Lerouxian Christine too (as well as a great voice). Good Raoul too!
Well he is supposed to be a magician as well as seen in Bravo Monsieur when he’s throwing fireballs at Christine and Raoul so it is probably his new power 😂
I think that Marcus is a very good Phantom. In this video, he has not so much emotion, but when I seen him in the show, in real life, I cried at the final lair. He choosed to be a "Leroux Phantom", and it's very good. I am so sad to see this Phantom leave the casting, and he was so kind and lovely too. It's true that he is a bit bad in this video but he is very good now.
This Raoul doesn’t want to leave the lair! 😂😂😂 Usually I’d see Raoul ready to pull and drag Christine out of there and she hesitates before they get yelled at, but this Raoul is either wanting so much to punch the Phantom in the face before leaving or just simply doesn’t want to leave! 🤣
This Raoul may seem a tiny bit squirrelly for such a large man, but I REALLY like his choice of pausing before crawling under the portcullis, looking at the Phantom like, "I don't trust you to not have this come crashing down on me when I'm halfway through."
I think Marcus choises of a less likeable phantom is just fantastic. Most of the phantoms are unstable emosion guys. He doesn't have to shout so we'll feel his pain, his quiteness is what makes him horrible to the world. Ramin is my phantom, but Marcus does a wonderful job taking other aspects of the phantom personality.
The OBC will always be my favorite, but I really like Anna as Christine, and I like the Phantom and Raoul too...I actually prefer this Final Lair to the one in the 25th. and I loved how Christine walked away. brava!!
Anna is the best English Christine I'm from Germany and I think Valerie Link was the best Christine there... First I saw Anna in Love Never Dies and she has an amazing Voice!
Because the Phantom is supposed to be violent. He was written that way. Read the original novel. The Phantom or Erik was written as a gothic horror character.
Thank you very much for uploading this video. This scene is one of my favourites, but with this cast I feel like the whole show is a bit sleepy and lacking emotions. Luckly, I saw Phantom for the first time with Ramin Karimloo as the Phantom,Gina Beck as Christine and Simon Bailey as Raoul. Marcus' Phantom is a bit weak for me. I'm use to hear him scream "Christine, why? Why?" and here he always remains on the same emotional level.
His Phantom is kind of a return to the high reedy tenor that Michael Crawford was. Interesting. He also sounds like Claude Rains sometimes. Very interesting.
Man, you know what I've noticed, in many versions, right after the phantom says "its over now the music of the night" the audience claps and woos and in some versions they don't, such as this one. I wonder if that gets to the actor playing the phantom, you know, like if they take it personally, even when the audience might not mean it to be a commentary on the performance. Some people who go to the theatre have just been conditioned to clap at the end of a performance rather than after climax/high moments. Just a thought.
I’m basically hitting copy/paste from a comment I left on a different video, but here, have my take on things: “Obviously the Phantom is the Phantom, he’s a little crazy and hella dangerous and not exactly the ideal boyfriend. But tbh, Marcus Lovett’s Phantom just feels a little more... idk, tender than the standard? Careful? Idk what to call it but if someone put a gun to my head and said “pick the Phantom that would be the least terrible to wind up dating” I would easily say Marcus Lovett. He’s like Prince Lotor. The potential for a wonderful boi but the creators want him to suffer.” So yeah, TL;DR: Of course Marcus isn’t Ramin. He can’t be - because they interpret the Phantom in very different ways, and so naturally, not everyone is going to gravitate towards the same portrayal. Don’t get me wrong, I think Ramin is a FANTASTIC performer and a wonderful Phantom. But because - for some reason - I have a thing for self-loathing angsty bois (Prince Lotor, Kylo Ren, Murtagh Morzansson... shall I go on? 😂) I tend to appreciate Marcus’s iteration of the Phantom more. It’s a matter of preference.
but this isn't the book though, this is the reincarnation through andrew lloyd webber and I think that's even what he wants after creating love never dies. I would agree with you if it wasn't for love never dies.
My only problem is, it feels like he was trying to rush the orchestra the entire scene. Like, the orchestra is playing the score at normal pace, and he's rushing through his lines, throwing the harmony off a little.
I just listened to Ramin and Sierra, Micheal and Sarah, and This one. An for me this one is tied for first with Ramin and Sierra. Micheal just did not have any emotion in his voice. and Sarah… I don't enjoy her voice. My Opinion
Hmm... No. Really no. In my mind, they can't take Love Never Dies singers to be Phantom singers, and conversely. Because they have a voice too mature for the role. Really, I love Ben Lewis. He is really perfect in mature Phantom. But not in young Phantom I think. (Yes, for me Anna O'Byrne seems too mature for this role, too.)
I don't know why a lot of people think that the Phantom in POTO was young. Perhaps because it fits their narrative with Ramin? The Phantom in POTO was cca. 50 years 'young'. So expecting young voice is somewhat strange. Even if the Phantom would be younger, I don't know if 10 years of difference would make such a difference :) The fact is, every performer is different. With his/her voice, his/her acting... Just sit down and enjoy. And try not to compare too much ;) Now we even have black Christine in London.
Anna's Christine is a bit too much of a diva to me. I believe that Christine really loves the phantom in her own special way, and here I feel like Anna is over acting and over reacting much of the time. She soppused to love her angel and kiss him to free his lonley soul from the darkness he lives in. Anna is kissing Marcus and I feel nothing but pity...
everyone stop with the comparing. this performers better than that blah blah blah. just enjoy this awesome performance n production!
Well said 🙏

@@jordynann189 Even so, the real love story is between Christine and Raoul.

Wow, I got chills when she sung "tears of hate"
Well done, Anna!

HOW I HOWLED AHAHAHAHA

He’s fallen for the phantom too, thats it
LOVE Anna's voice
I love Anna's acting style

Anna is definitely one of my favorites! This is better than the 25th Anniversary Edition Final Lair for sure. Anna is just amazing in it.
I think Marcus choises of a less likeable phantom is just fantastic. Most of the phantoms are unstable emosion guys. He doesn't have to shout so we'll feel his pain, his quiteness is what makes him horrible to the world. I think he actually tries to make the Phantom less likable, which is daring.
Well said 👏👏🙏
I took that from his performance too - and you can tell through his acting choices that he took some elements from the book as well.
THANK YOU
Thank you so much for these videos! They're just wonderful. :)

Poor unhappy Erik.
WestEnd/London 2012
Can we match Anna O'Byrne with Matt Cammelle? That would make LND really possible.
The West End production in London.

Where in the theater were you sitting???
Brittany Broberg Box 5!
3:22 it was a real person in the mirror but there is a dummy there. WTH
The real person was supposed to be a dummy

Oh GOD what happened to the phantom, so awful that Christine chose Raoul.......
like erik chain me to the wall ❤️👅💨

(Yes, for me Anna O'Byrne seems too mature for this role, too.)
A French Guardsman ben played in the original musical in 2017-2018 and he was fantastic. The best and only Phantom in both musicals

Whoa! Marcus scared me! He's not a bad singer but, I just don't see him as the Phantom. I like Ramin better.
Marcus Lovett is horrendous.
Compare him to the violent Cooper Grodin.
Good enough to be cast as the Phantom.
Marcus sucked on Broadway in the 90s and sucks in the West End in the 2010s
He doesn't know how to sing the notes in a rhythmically correct way
I think he and Anna are very good together
Far better than anyone who thinks it is OK to criticise him
No emotion from this phantom
I like that in his characterisation
This is awful. Truly, truly shocking.
They should have gotten Ben Lewis to do Phantom. This guy is awful. It's getting hard to watch.
She's fantastic, but he is just.. horrid. Shockingly horrid.
