      Thank you. Yes, there are still a bunch of people (individuals and dealerships) that are perpetuating the falsehood that the M8 has the same lean problem as the Twin Cam. It does not.
      We have even removed some comments from this video of people that still posted that the M8 needs to have a tuner if a free flowing A/C and/or exhaust are added. We don't generally remove comments, but letting them stay can just further confuse what should be clear...a tuner is NOT needed to correct a too lean issue, since they are not too lean.

      Don't know which 2021 M8 you have, but one of the Outlaw Air Cleaners (they all come with an EBS) will significantly improve performance over the stock air cleaner. Here's a video showing just one of them- th-cam.com/video/KtbdOoVNL9g/w-d-xo.html
      You can run an Outlaw Air Cleaner and open exhaust with the stock tune. With a PV tune it will improve performance...but not as much as the air cleaner will improve it, and no damage will occur if you run the OEM tune.
      Regarding exhaust, that is a tricky question. Everyone's ears are different. This is the best advice we can give for someone not wanting to loud of exhaust-

    Thanks for the advice guys. I have an aftermarket air cleaner and Freedom pipes. When l initially did it the bike was cold and it was revving unusually high. Gave it a about 10min and the bike automatically adjusted itself to the higher air intake and the free flowing exhaust system. My friends thought I was crazy. Thanks for making that clear about the M8 114. Now my friends are disappointed because they spent a small fortune getting tunes etc. Anyhow, love the channel and the straight forward information you guys give. It's refreshing to see. Yes. The nice thing is that you can add a great A/C to your M8 with no need for a tuner. If you need to take the bike in for warranty work it is a 15 minute job to put the OEM A/C back on it so there is no issues with the warranty.

      Yes, if it is the HD extended warranty it would. There is an alternative, which will put some $ back in your pocket. HD Extended Warranty is an insurance policy. You can cancel it anytime, and get a refund of the time still left on the warranty. Then you can get a real extended warranty, that does not have so many restrictions on it. Unfortunately for us in the United Kingdom and EU we have x4 O2 Sensors. Any kind of after market pipe fitted will require deletion of the downstream O2 Sensors fitted in the silencers. O2 Eliminators will not cure this and the bike will still throw trouble codes. This will still require the purchase of either a V&H FP4 or Dynojets PV4, though have heard of tuners having Direct Access Hardware that can perform the same process. I would note these new tunes by V&H/Dynojet retain and use the upstream O2 sensors only editing the performance end of the map. Startup/tickover and cruising is still controlled by the sensors and deleting them is no longer an option on the M8 harley. The bike will not run if try to delete the upstream O2 sensors by way of O2 Eliminators. Only a fully created Dyno Tune will allow the deletion of the upstream O2 sensors stopping the bike from running first closed loop then open loop (please excuse if thats the other way around) If indeed as you say the M8 does not run weak then why does the bike stumble around 20 -30mph? for us thats cruising between traffic control cameras (average speed cameras) I noticed this same issue with my twin cam along with excessive popping and banging (Harley map) V&H FP3 cured both the popping and banging and the slow speed stumble at the expense of a small amount of takeoff performance. I would say the M8 still runs weak during startup and cruising and that it only runs stoic when under harder acceleration at the edited performance end of the map.

      Thanks for your comment.
      We have no experience with UK or EU models.
      You mention that it stumbles at low speeds (20-30 mph), that is an indication that it is too lean. Twin Cams did that here in the USA also, as well as 2007 and later Sportster...all because of being tuned too lean from the factory.
      That is Not the case with M8's here in the USA...and as seen in the AFR charts, they are not too lean from the factory, like the Twin Cam or EFI Sportsters.
      Unfortunately it sounds like it is the case for the M8's with the EU emission standards.
      I have seen quite a few posts like this in the different forums. I cannot attest to the accuracy of them, because we do not have access to a EU Harley, but it may be of some help to you.
      "I very recently bought a new 21 Softail Standard (M8) Euro 5 bike and the Dynojet PV-3B.
      I talked to Dynojet UK and they sent me tunes for it with the V&H Shortshots Staggered fitted. That exhaust uses the upstream O2 sensor, but not the downstream ones, hence all the questions. The tunes they sent me switch the downstream O2 sensor inputs off, so no error codes."
      Thank you for sharing. and please come back and share what you end up doing to solve the problem.

    A tune may not be "required" but it definitely helps with cooling of the engine which in turn adds to its longevity. Due to the EPA and the like, bikes out of the factory run in open-loop mode during idle and lower RPM which is a problem.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the 2017-2020 M8's they will run a little better with a good tune. Heat reduction is small...in the 3-5 degree range.
      The M8 is NOT lean from the factory like the Twin Cam and Sporty engines.
      Low RPM, low load is Closed Loop, not open loop. Here is a video that goes over that-

      @@DKCustomProducts Trying to say is Harley has no choice but to attempt to target fuel mix at 14.7 to 1. Its the law. To do this, Harley built fuel tables and then use a narrow band O2 sensor to maintain the fuel trim (Closed Loop). This is only available during idle and light load "cruise" conditions. The rest of the time the ecm just uses the appropriate setting from the fuel tables (Open Loop). In open loop the O2 sensor has no function. And this is because of the limitations of narrow band sensors. They can only function at fuel settings of 14.3:1 to 15:1 to one or there abouts. In closed loop the ecm trims the fuel based on O2 input. In open loop the ecm uses the stored fuel tables (maps).
      OK so how does the ecm know when its in closed loop or open loop? If 14.6 is the entry in the look up table for the applicable cell, it tries to operate in closed loop. This is call the Air Fuel Ratio Switch. And its the reason why trying to trick the ecm with resistors in the O2 sensor circuit don't always work well.

I just installed an RSD A/C and I started it up and from the gate the ecu was confused and kept the idle throttle higher than normal and popping occurs. Talked to Service at the dealer yesterday (just bought a bike a month ago) and the tech showed me all the Harley air cleaners in their catalogue AND he pointed out the notations next to each and every air cleaner that said: "All models require ECM Calibration with Screamin' Eagle Pro Tuner for proper installation". I told him I was thinking of adding an aftermarket Air Cleaner that wasn't Screamin" Eagle, and he said the notation still applies, with the additional note that IF I change the air cleaner it will make the engine run lean and "That" would cause damage voiding the warranty. I then asked him if the ECM would adjust without a tuner and he said "NO!".
    I would love to have someone convince the dealer to let me alter the air flow without telling me that I would void the warranty.

      A few things to be aware of:
      1. This video only applies up to model year 2020. We have not tested the 2021 to see what the calibration is on it.
      2. Unfortunately, most dealership employees don't know a whole lot about the bikes they sell, sell parts for and service. It is a sad situation.
      3. On 2017-2020 bikes you can see that the ECM DOES adjust by looking at the AFR in the charts shown in the link below. They show that the AFR is in a good range with the stock air cleaner and with an aftermarket HiFlow Air cleaner and Will NOT damage the engine.

    So adding a slip on muffler + high air air filter on a sport glide for example from 2020 will not require a tunning??? Strange some guys told me they got the "motor" light on after a couple of miles without tunning 😮

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Adding a free flowing exhaust and air cleaner to an M8 does not require a tune and it will not make a check engine light come on.
      You could have an intake leak or an exhaust leak causing the check engine light to come on.
      There are many other reasons that a check engine light could come on, but since those mods were made recent, to the check engine light coming on, I would say check for a leak in your intake and exhaust first.
      Here is another video on the M8's not needing a tune with a little more information that you may find interesting- th-cam.com/video/Lb_57Z_Ipms/w-d-xo.html

    I have a 2018 street glide special I’m fixing to add cobra head pipes with a Vansen Hines VO 2 air intake and I’m going to be putting aftermarket slip on’s as well because I’m getting rid of the catalytic converter with the stock pipes. Wouldn’t I need to do a tune in order to correct that or with the ECM do that for me without me, having to put on a fuel pack three.

      Will it run better if you tune it after doing your list of things? Yes. Will it be dangerously lean if you run the OEM tune? No.
      Here is a video that may be helpful/interesting to you- th-cam.com/video/0vbTkRvFa80/w-d-xo.html
      With your VO 2 intake and aftermarket slip-ons, you would be well served to use an External Breather System and some Thunder Torque Inserts™, otherwise whatever tune you use (OEM or aftermarket) will eventually not match the compression ratio, and the open pipes will rob power due to reversion.

    My stock 2020 107ci was about 14.9 afr while cruising, and would never drop below 14.5 unless it was in the enrichment cycle under very heavy throttle. Not as lean as the TC's, but that is still way too lean even for a liquid cooled engine, much less our air/oil cooled engibes.

    For the 2020 heritage 114, I want to remove the the cats out of my S&S slip ons. Harley said I don't need a tune with a 50 state legal slip on exhaust with stock air cleaner. But they wouldn't answer the question with the cats out of the mufflers. I don't want to tune as it voids the warranty. Also I'm looking to get 100,000 miles out of the bike at about 10k per year. I'm just looking for a better sound and longevity of the motor. The stock power is fine for me.

      You do not need a tune to run safely, even if you remove the cats. Will it run better with a good tune? Yes, but it will not run bad without one, nor will you be causing any accelerated wear.
      You will not void the warranty by removing the cats from the S&S slip ons.
      You will need to use TTI's (if you are not already) with those slip-ons for more power, cooler running, and a bit better MPG. Here is a video explaining why- th-cam.com/video/pr6z00gL5Yg/w-d-xo.html

      @@MadCapDarkglobe That is a idle instability code. With codes for loss of idle control you need to find the source of the issue. By far the most common cause of idle issues on the M8 is either an intake leak with the plastic manifold or when the air cleaner was installed the throttle body support bracket was not removed. It can also be that during the install one of the throttle body sensor connections was bumped and is not getting a good connection now.
      Whenever I have an air cleaner off I unplug all the connectors, apply a bit of dielectric grease, then plug them back in and make sure they are seated well.
      A high idle with a P0505 code is generally not a symptom of a bad tune, but more likely a vacuum leak somewhere...so check hoses also.

      Some SE products will void parts of the warranty, no matter who installs them.

      I would recommend getting a real warranty (you can see video on that here- th-cam.com/video/Hqkxag-S1a8/w-d-xo.html )
      That way you can do what you want to your bike, and everything is covered.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  ปีที่แล้ว

      You will not need to do a tune on an M8 after doing those mods.
      Will it run a bit stronger if you do? Yes.
      HOWEVER, you will not be too lean (like on a Twin Cam or Sportster) if you do those mods with the OEM tuen.

    I just bought my 114 fat boy it came with cobra exhaust and I’m not sure what brand air cleaner! I don’t like how quiet it is! Would I need a tune if I removed baffles from the cobras? Or do you recommend I get a tune? Tia

      If you remove the baffles from your M8 Fat Boy 114 you will not need a tune, but you will lose some low-midrange torque. You can install the TTI's to get back and even improve your low-mid range torque. You can see the TTI's at this link - www.dkcustomproducts.com/thunder-torque-inserts-c57.htm
      Of course for the most performance out of your bike you could get a tune, but it is not necessary and it won't hurt your bike to not have a tune.

    I tried my best to look through the comments and find my answer but couldn't find it. I see all these comments asking if both a slip-on and air cleaner will work, but did not see if a full exhaust and a/c will work without a tune (for example a D&D 2-1 exhaust or a full sac head and a pair of slip-on)?

      Yes, they will work with a 2017-2020 M8, we do not yet know about a 2021.

Do you think the dealer would detect if I just put my own exhaust on it and cancel the Stage 1. I have no problem taking off a after market exhaust before I take it in for service. Just don't want to lose my 5 yr warranty. I know these would definitely check the ecu for sure. ..they are a##holes like that.

      @@tricgix2949 Yeah, the ECU is supposed to be checked at every Harley Dealership whenever a bike goes in.
      I can only tell you what is best for your bike, and what I would do.
      I would run whatever exhaust I wanted, that performed well, along with an air cleaner that was free flowing and did not put hot, oily, oxygen depleted air back into the intake and combustion chambers.
      Then, IF, I ever had to take it in for warranty work I would put the stock air cleaner and mufflers back on.
      There is not going to be a very big gain at all from the SE exhaust and tuner, not worth the $ to me.

    Im having to change my tune to make it more rich. Ive done a LOT of changes chasing the heat problem on my 2020 RG. even stock it was HOT. after doing a stage one complete it helped a LITTLE bit. no cat headers, free flowing for the most part. but engine temp is in the 330s on the interstate. this is about 70 degrees higher than they say it should run. mechanic said mostly likely increasing the fuel just even a bit could drop it 30-40 degrees. which at least makes it ridable even if only 30 degrees are dropped. Im having to put my foot on the right side peg any time I am not actively using the break cause it'll literally blister my ankle through my boot.

      www.dkcustomproducts.com/why-how-to-cool-down-the-twin-cam-engine-part-i-dk-cl-tc-dn-1.htm
      btw, going from the OEM tune on your M8 to a good tune will drop temps 10-15 degrees. Not sure if you can get a 30-40 degree drop going from the OEM tune to a different one...it is possible to get more than 15 with a tune that is super rich (richer than it should be).
      Check out the links above to see how to cool it down and have it run right!

      That said, the OEM tune will keep the AFR is the safe range, even with the addition of the neighbor haters. Eventually, because of the hot, oily air, it will need to be tuned to continue running well.

    Question Decatted stock header, cobra neighbor hater slip-ons stock air filter. Is SGS 2022 M8 running lean now. Does he have to tune it now.. He was told by a shop over the phone it's running lean now. Without them seeing or hearing the bike..what tuner do you suggest. Not doing cams

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  ปีที่แล้ว

      Unless he has a leak somewhere, he should not be running too lean. All M8's (2017-2023 - 2024's not here yet) can have free flowing intake and exhaust and run the OEM tune without being too lean.
      Here is another video on the subject- th-cam.com/video/Lb_57Z_Ipms/w-d-xo.html
      If he still wants a tuner, we prefer the Power Vision, but many folks like the FP4 that works with a smartphone.

      Nothing to be upset about. The power vision is a great tuner and even though the M8's do not need a tune, a good tune will only improve your performance. Thank you for commenting! 😎 MB

      Congrats on your new ride! 👍
      All of the 587, 606, 636v & 828 air cleaners at the following link will fit your bike. They will all make for better performance. It is really just a matter of which one you like the looks of the best. None of them will void your warranty. (some Dealerships may say that they will, but the FTC just came down on Harley hard for saying things like that, see the video link below)

      You can go with a free flowing intake and exhaust and still not be too lean on your 2023 SG. Here is a video relevant to your year bike- th-cam.com/video/Lb_57Z_Ipms/w-d-xo.html

    thanks a lot for putting this info out there guys! 👍 really goo stuff! I really wanted to see where the M8 stock tune AFR's were running, but don't have "easy access" to a dyno. this is great news for a lot of people. I'm guessing that a higher flow air cleaner and slip-ons will potentially cool it down some too?

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We have charts showing where the stock AFR tunes are running, you can seem them at this link- www.dkcustomproducts.com/milwaukee-eight-dyno-charts-other-interesting-info-dk-m8-rpt.htm
      The higher flow air cleaner and slip-ons will cool it a bit. Make sure to run an External Breather System on the air cleaner...that will do more to cool it down than the high flow of the air cleaner. Also, stop the reversion in the slip ons, that will do more to cool it down than the free flow aspect of the slip ons. There is a whole series on why and how to cool down an M8 at this link- th-cam.com/play/PLb3bvZgbH92_3s-2vv63QggFJ3nteFd_C.html

    Ok i got a 2020 breakout so you are saying i can go with a SE extreme AC and a super trapped bootlegger exhaust and do not need a tune till the next step of put a cam.

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That is correct. Will it run better if you do a tune? Yes. Will you damage it from running the factory tune with those components. Nope...it is not too lean...especially with that air cleaner that is shooting hot oily air into the intake.

  • @vf12497439
    @vf12497439 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have to ask, if an aftermarket air cleaner does not change the AFR.... then was the stock air cleaner flowing enough? No change? Following that, then maybe a cam, bigger cylinders would then require a better air cleaner since it would then flow higher volumes?

    • @DKCustomProducts
      @DKCustomProducts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The aftermarket air cleaner clearly makes a big difference. The ECM adjusts the AFR to keep it in a good range, resulting in a nice bump in power.
      Look at this dyno chart to see a 10% increase in HP by just changing to a good air cleaner- www.dkcustomproducts.com/media/wysiwyg/Stock_Stock_587.jpg

      @@vf12497439 Yeah, the M8' start at a good AFR, and then with roughly 20% adjustment available in the ECM it does really well with up to free flowing exhaust and intake.
