  • In this broncolor 'How To' video Urs Recher and I look at techniques for creating hard and soft light.
    We do this using soft-boxes to maximize the detail and texture in this Buddha statue, resulting in a beautifully crafted still life image.
    See the final result on my blog: bit.ly/buddha-s...

    Dear Karl and Urs.
    In this way, I want to thank you for the great explanation that you provide. I am a Dutch amateur photographer who is busy with photography every day. Recently I started with studio photography. Not because I wanted to but I had to because of my handicap. Through you I have been given the pleasure in studio photography. I work with speedlights but can still learn from your videos. You have given me another goal. And that is tabletop photography with speedlights. Thank you for this. A friendly greeting, Toine

    Great video you too guys. The way you guys put it together as if I am right there with you in Urs' pad. The conversational type teaching in Q and A style helps. Very well scripted. That is how to's should be in my opinion!
    I have had my eyes on Siros lights for quite sometime now. Last Christmas, I bought the Broncolor softboxes and this Christmas, its going to be the Lights. Its going to be one hell of a Christmas on my pocket!

    Awesome video! Very very helpful - gives me so much more variations I can do in my studio portraits without changing out my light mods. I hate changing out my soft boxes coz I have such a small studio

    Dear sirs, how about for the front light to do it like in a paramount lighting position, that would have balance and symmetry for both sides of the faces? Maybe with reflector below ala beauty lighting but higher position and more contrastry?

    what if narrow strip mask were used instead of tilting softbox ? whould that create the same effect or different one ?

    • @ursrecher3812
      @ursrecher3812 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A strip lite would not help. No matter how narrow the strip lite is, it still has a light angle of 180 degrees. To get my gradations, I would still have to tilt it.

    Am I then correct to assume if you feather the light too much it would start to become "harder"? E.g. Like for portraiture if you have a softbox at a close distance to subjects face, 45degree above and 45 to the side, and you point it downwards too much to feather.

    • @VisualEducationStudio
      @VisualEducationStudio  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      In narrowing the angle of light you are causing it to become smaller which makes it a harder light source but you are also causing one part of the light to be brighter than the other (the closest part is becomes brighter than the further away part).

    Gorgeous!! But what camera to use for the art-works ?

    • @VisualEducationStudio
      @VisualEducationStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most modern 35mm cameras are good enough, around 22mp and using a good lens around 70-100mm or a good macro lens would be good.

    While shooting with mirror.... Why back lights were off?

    • @VisualEducationStudio
      @VisualEducationStudio  7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Only the modelling lamps were off so that Urs could see the effect of the mirror more easily. The flashes were still on.

    And what is the name of the Camera for the photos of the galleries and museums

    • @VisualEducationStudio
      @VisualEducationStudio  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you mean what type of camera's do museums and galleries use then it is usually either Hasselblad H6-100 or multi shot or Phase One.

    Does Urs not like scrims? I feel like a lot of the gradation he was looking to get could have been more easily done that way.

    • @ursrecher3812
      @ursrecher3812 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do like scrims, or grids. But textile grids for boxes have a rather basic structure. Big openings and large fabric grids. So when angled away from the object too much, I might get multiple shadows.

    Nice tutorial! Urs, You said it was from Indonesia. Was it from art market in Indonesia or Bali or Yogyakarta ? Is it just a replica? I hope it is just a replica, because we are still searching for original Buddha Head that missing from Borobudur Temple :D

    • @ursrecher3812
      @ursrecher3812 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did NOT steal it from Borobudur, believe me!

      @wilsonxyz92 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Urs Recher
      I believe you Urs 😃, I didn't say you stole it. I just make sure it's just a replica from local artist 😀. They (~200 Buddha Heads) were not stolen, but they had been lost since borobudur was discovered in early 19th century.

    Who's the teacher Urs or Karl. Lol.

  • @StevenFinlayGB
    @StevenFinlayGB 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Could the front softbox not be replaced with a stripbox or is there an effect you get from a wider softbox that a strip doesn't provide?

    • @ursrecher3812
      @ursrecher3812 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No matter how narrow the stripbox is, a diffused light always has a light angle of 180 degrees. To get the gall off, I would still have to work with the angle of my light.

    • @StevenFinlayGB
      @StevenFinlayGB 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, so you are working with a fraction of those 180 degrees. Which is what gives it directionality. Thanks for this.
