Do Picolites have any advantages over standard studio flashes with snoots?

+Yuksel Pinarbasi The quality of the light, especially at the edges of the light pattern, is very different when using optical spots, Fresnels and snoots (and barndoors and grids as well; might as well throw that in). You can't get the sharp cutoff that the optical spot gives you without putting a cutout very close to the subject, and you'll see diffraction patterns around the edge if you try. That doesn't have much to do with the Picolite small lamps themselves, but with the accessories being used with them. The Picolites are considerably smaller and lighter than standard-sized heads like the Pulso or monolights like the Siros, and the accessories like the Fresnel attachment and the optical spot are smaller, lighter and (it needs to be said) much cheaper than the equivalent for full-sized lights. (Compare the Fresnel attachment for the Picolite to the Flooter, for instance.) Small and light means that you can get the lights placed tightly and more precisely using things like grip arms and articulated arms without having to worry too much about counterweighting and so forth (the worry doesn't go away, it just becomes a lot less of a worry). And unless you really, really like creating an image in post-processing, a big light set way back, no matter how well you're able to control the projection pattern, is no substitute for a small light in tight - the fall-off is completely different.
