  • Today we're in Bolivia and going inside one the worlds most dangerous silver mines, Cerro Rico in Potosi. Truth is, we almost avoided this all together... This is the 15-Day South America tour we did: geni.us/RU5A5ft ⬇ See below for more details and recommendations ⬇
Welcome back to Bolivia, this is a travel vlog we almost didn't film, but we're glad we did. In this video we're going inside one the worlds most notoriously dangerous silver mines, Cerro Rico in Potosi Bolivia.
The number one thing to to in Potosi is the silver mine tour, truth is it's not really a very touristy town right now, so the mine remains a bit of a selling point and a fascination. The town is growing though and there's some amazing restaurants, some cool bars and cafes developing.
In terms of the mine itself, Cerro Rico is a legendary mountain steeped in history and tragedy. Known as the "Rich Mountain," it was once the world's largest silver deposit and fuelled the Spanish Empire's wealth in the colonial era. Sadly though, its wealth came at a tremendous human cost, as thousands of indigenous labourers endured perilous conditions and exploitation in the mines.
These South America travels were filmed in October 2023, an amazing time of year to visit. We spent a month exploring Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile and these travel vlogs are to share our experience of the first time touching the continent... safe to say we loved it! Over that time we took 2 different tours with G Adventures and that saved our ass in more ways than one - stress free, safer, all the travel advice we needed, transport pre-arranged and an epic group of people to travel with. If you plan on travelling South America (or anywhere else in the world actually!) take a look here: geni.us/fzR3R Also, consider using some of our links and recommendations from the below to support the channel. hola, es la sopa tradicional de la Región/ciudad y que la temperatura promedio es de 5' C. con vientos en invierno y una altitud de 4350 en sus barrios mas altos, casi como el Cerro Rico mismo, es llamada la ciudad mas fría de Bolivia, con justa razón. Entonces es lógico que esa sea su sopa traficional

The Potosí mines may be tough, but the miners are tougher. Can't deny it, their spirit shines brighter than any silver in the Potosi mines. Quite an interesting place when my travel dart lands soon in this city of Bolivia.

It was pretty intimidating for a lot of the group! The masks did an OK job for the time we were in there but you'd want something much better to stay longer for sure!

It's nice to know that now miners allow women into a working mine. Before, it was a big deal because miners believed women were bad luck. My class wasn't allowed to visit a working mine for this reason.

Hello, I just wanted to clarify that the name of the Soup is KALA-PHURKA, they are two words in Aymara, since before the 19th century this language was widely spoken in Potosi, along with Qechua and Spanish, but little was lost.
KALA = Rock, stone PHURKA = boil, boiling.
In Quechua K'ALA is indeed Naked, but it is a confusion of the Guide, since the pronunciation is different.
    Greetings from Potosí

In Bolivia where there are few options for stable employment, people have little choice but to risk their health & lives in the mountain where 100's of thousands of people have died. In the best case scenario to make a humble living.
Giving a juice box or some crisps to people there doesn't undo the reality that the people of Bolivia (live with the legacy of and) continue to be exploited for their resources by wealthier nations and corporations in the global north - which maintains the poverty that the beautiful people of Potosi continue to experience.
