@@emijunkai actually we do, areas that are prone to earthquakes have codes to build to that consideration, flood planes are restricted. You will see existing homes in these areas that are not to those codes, but when new homes/businesses go in, they will be. Of course sometimes money changes hands to avoid regulations, but that is every country.

Rachel don’t feel bad about not knowing about the elbow whiskers! I was convinced my kitten had growths or something wrong and took him to the vet like 3 times before they were like: “...those are whiskers, calm down.”
In my defense they felt bumpy and weird and I found my kittens in a literal dump so I was a little overprotective. 🤗
My kitten climbs into the closet and I get protective. I literally grab his bell toy and rattle it to get him out because I'm too anxious about him being in there

@@maxistothemax940 My cat loves hanging out in the closet. All of the clothes make it comfortable to lie there and he gets peace and quite. He usually gets out after his nap is over. No need to feel anxious, just be careful to always leave a bit of an opening so the kitty can come out later. On the other hand, no advice for all of the cat hair that will be stuck on your clothes *forever*, I just keep old clothing on the shelf he likes to sleep on. 😅
I know someone who went to the vet with their male cat bec of chest/ belly bumps. Those were nipples.

and yea, bathrooms are like safe house during earthquakes. Some have a shell that is moulded and can sustain a certain amount of weight, and the toilet can be used as an emergency water source. Basically a survival cell. So in some old houses, owners would renovate their houses to integrate those toilets just in case something bad happens.

they literally do not eat trash, I mean you can see from what jun cooks. You are what you eat =D
Probably all the humidity from living in Japan. Suppose to be good for your skin.
Japan is super good for your health, as long as you don't eat at the fast food places (although they're still probably better than in america). Actually, MANY countries you will be healthier in just living there (america's healthcare system sucks ass, and has a creative interpretation of what is and isn't a cooking ingredient), but Japan is especially good at this. Although, if you're a medium or big type of person, you may need the sumo diet occasionally or you may faint, there's not a lot of available carbs in their food, so you may want to double up or even triple up on rice bowls, which is what stereotypically beefy people do in Japan. Although it's SUPER easy to get your protein (and veggies) in Japan, and since it's largely from soy, that means it's a vegan's dreamworld.
It's been a while since I watched rachel and jun. I did notice how Jun looked somewhat more mature than before, maybe cos of the facial hair?

Something that might be worth looking into is Geothermal heating and cooling; my parents had it installed when they built their house (30+ years ago) and love it since it really reduces the heating bill in the winter compared to the neighbors. However I don't know what the viability in Japan would be for geothermal. Another thing you could investigate is Denim Insulation, it's made from textile waste and is much safer than fiberglass.

If I may -
There exists a home design that's earthquake-proof, termite-proof, fire-proof and hurricane/typhoon-proof which is called a monolithic dome. As the name suggests, this is a rounded structure around which wind flows rather than slamming up against a flat wall, and because the building material is primarily Shotcrete (blown concrete) it's extremely sturdy. By sinking pipes 60 feet (I believe) into the dirt, you can also regulate the internal temperature of the home to be a steady 65 or so degrees all year round.
Please reference the Pensacola Dome, which survived 5 major hurricanes - including Katrina - for an idea of what this design looks like.
The main issue with the interior design would be noise reduction since the shape results in a rather cave-like echo, but the proper furnishings and window coverings should minimize excessive reverberation.
Also - Metallic epoxy floors are pretty much indestructible and completely customizable. This can be on nearly all types of other materials (even plywood), is self-leveling, easily maintained and may outlive you.

The description of this clip includes academic links supporting the theory that we've moved into a part of the cosmos that's not as magnetically well protected as we've been historically. We just lost our precious Lynx Point, Snowshoe Siamese named Jack and I started watching because of Pichi, the Snowshoe Siamese you rescued. I was so impressed with the determination you showed in capturing her. Bless you for rescuing your black & white kitty Poki I always go to the shelter to adopt cats or rescue local strays. My kitty I have left since Jack died is Ned and both he and I need another kitty, hopefully we can find another Siamese who needs a home. I am 77 and too old to start raising kittens but there seem to be lots of mixed Siamese and even purebred kittens. Ned is 13, another senior citizen and I have no idea what he would think or do. With your new house are you thinking of building an indoor/outdoor area for your kitties? Ned was a feral kid till he was three but is a love bug though shy of strangers,and is indoor only and has no desire to go outside even if there is an open door.; he's a good boy. Your cats are all so beautiful, how did you get a Weegie (Norwegian Forest Cat? Haku looks like he might have Main Coon in him, the American version of a Weegie, very big cats and he is so beautiful. Love that tail. Ned wants me because its nap time and his fav pillow is my arm. I have enjoyed watching your older streams and am looking to your future streams. 🙏😼💜🐈
The soil tests they do are called Geotechnical Borings. We geologists sometimes assist with these.

The new retaining walls are solid. I've seen them put in and then the land raised around them. It's like giant concrete blocks shaped like a capital "L" so the weight of the land won't allow it to tip.
But... getting land with no retaining walls Isa good idea :)
Central Heating is extremely efficient if the building is insulated. It's not in your traditional buildings because of the poor insulation. So reconsider that. Plus, most systems have a way to close the vents in certain area's of the house if you're concerned with unused space. So don't get caught up in that.

Rachel being so expressive with her voice and tone got me wondering: when you’re learning a second language, especially one with no derivation from your own, can you understand intonation and emotion behind the words? How long does it take for you to pick up on the meaning of pitch and tone changes?
You can, how long it takes you depends on the person. Some people understand that part first before even understanding the words, some people take longer and are more literal.
Laughter is the same in most languages, some facial expressions too. When you learn a language in its country of origin it's a lot easier to pick up on these things, however, I find that speaking to other English-speaking people who also speak Japanese gives the optimal level of cultural and linguistic understanding due to the shared struggles of kanji 😂😂😂🙃🙈
@@veganryori oh god Japanese seems so hard to learn! isn't the number of kanji like over 50,000? and having whole grammatical systems to express levels of politeness
I've learn two others languages beside my mother languange (and kinda fluent for both), and from my learning experiences I found it easier to understand the intonation and emotion rather than the words itself. For me body languange is easier to undestand, and its somehow more explicit
@@MissQueenOfDiamonds @Rachel Maria Kanji sure is hard but you definitely don't have to know them all. Even with alphabetical languages people usually have a passive vocabulary (=words they know) of just 10k words and an active vocabulary (=words they actually use) of 2k-4k words iirc.
Picking up intonation and the like is rather easy I'd say, except maybe in languages like Chinese where the stress can alter the meaning of the word so that a Chinese learner might focus their attention on identifying the stress and thus might miss some information conveyed by intonation. (or at least that's how I imagine learning Chinese...)
One thing that I feel is harder than picking up intonation and emotion is to produce them when speaking in a foreign language, because you are busy thinking how to phrase things etc. and might not have the capacity to add such information to your speaking.
