Making Time: The Bizarre Story Behind Daylight Savings

  • Are you one of the millions of Americans annoyed by having to change your clock twice a year? Ever wondered where this idea even came from? Our new video walks through the bizarre history of Daylight Saving Time.
In the 20th century, we decided we could…outsmart time. And we got the idea from a postal worker who wanted more daylight hours for his bug collecting hobby. Seriously.
Nothing came of the idea until World War I-when the Kaiser’s Germany implemented Daylight Saving Time as a wartime measure. Shortly thereafter, the United States adopted it too...and then got rid of it as soon as the war was over. Rinse and repeat for World War II. Afterward, state and local governments were free to decide the time for themselves. The result? Chaos. Eventually, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed the bill making daylight savings national.
Since then, twice a year, we’re all reminded that the human body is not designed to reset its internal clock. What do you think about Daylight Saving Time? Let us know in the comments below.

We voted to rid our state from DSTime. Why do we need Congress to control our state? Arizona and Hawaii are happy with Standard time !

Agreed. This country was made to be a Republic for a reason - but the federal government has been doing everything in their power to have total control over the states and continue to do so.

Getting dark early is depressing, get more done when it stays light in the evening like yardwork. Loved it back in the 70's when i was a kid and we stayed on Daylight saving time year round

Minor detail the reason I have always understood it to be the starting of school as to not have kids waiting for bus in the dark.

I would be ever so grateful to stop changing time twice a year. It always takes me 6 - 8 weeks minimum to adjust to every time change. Even changing the date that we change the time after all these years has affected me. Leave the dang clocks alone. I don't need or want daylight til nearly 10pm in the summer in western Michigan. It interferes with eating dinner. In winter on standard time sunset is around 5:30 and works it's way earlier as the days get shorter. One gets accustomed to dinner when the Sun goes down. By the long days of summer with daylight savings time sunset is at 9:45. The one hour clock change turns into a 4 hour difference. The older I get the more difficult it becomes. I won't bother getting into what this does to sleeping. It wasn't quite as difficult when I lived much further east in the time zone but has never been an easy adjustment. Spending 3 - 4 months a year dealing with dinner and sleep changes is absolutely ridiculous.

Clocks are not arbitrary. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, National Safety Council, National PTA, and many more urge against permanent DST (false time) and for permanent Standard Time (natural time). #EndDST #SaveStandardTime

It’s about preparing yourself. People will oversleep anyway regardless if the clocks are set back or not. It’s eight or nine months. We don’t need to follow the path of other countries there’s a reason why we switch Time back-and-forth which is also good for bills and more. It’s about preparing yourself

Thanks for your video. One wonders, who's making money off of it? In the 1980's, Congress actually stopped the time change for a year. Safety warnings were issued by the government telling people to take extra precautions during early morning hours to prevent accidents. Tragically, a little girl was killed after she ran in front of a car before sunrise. The time issue immediately changed back. Her death (which, happens everyday) was used to manipulate the public to accept the idiocy of the change. As we all know, nothing happens in the country unless someone is making money. So, who's profiting from the time change?

😩😭😡🤬I HATE HATE HATE HATE the time changes!! 😡🤬Businesses and schools can have seasonal hours if they want, in the USA just pick one standard time and go with that!! It pisses me off on so many levels that I can’t express exactly how much HATE I have for it! 😡

I remember when this wads debated and put into effect. Best argument was that children were having to stand alone in the dark for as much as an hour waiting for the school buses. Some at the end of roads in wooded areas. Some alone next to apartment complexes. Both parents having to leave for work. Leave the time as it is. For the children's sake.

DST made slightly more sense in the late 19th and early 20th century in manufacturing. The buildings used skylights for supplementary lights
But now we have high efficiency lighting and smaller human workforce in manufacturing so it's irrelevant.
Make it Standard Time year round. At noon the sun should be roughly overhead.

3:40 States may either observe seasonal DST on the national schedule, or keep standard time year round (e.g. AZ, HI). The state laws awaiting federal action are for year-round DST.
4:26 AASM recommends year-round standard time, not year-round DST.

Great video! I have one critique. As I was watching on my phone I had trouble hearing the spoken words over the music and sound effects. A little side-chaining would go a long way in this video to make it that much better, in my humble opinion.
