- When playing solo piano, you have a crazy amount of freedom, but you also need to know how to use it! In this video, I'm going to walk you through a series of textures with different voicings, runs, arpeggios, harmony techniques, and hand-separation techniques that will give you some really interesting new ways of approaching playing solo. I used to be really uncomfortable playing solo piano, but now it's legitimately my favorite way to play-- let's see if we can get you feeling the same!

The infinity of this instrument is so intimidating. To get better, we have to accept that the path is infinite and love that fact.
Beautiful playing mate. That Gb7 gets me everytime...
Thanks, Greg, appreciate it glad you dig it
thanks a lot man! Hi from Argentina!!
Love this video ! You presented enough content for a lifetime …..and all examples are very musical. Thank you so much !
@@bernieshufon6001 you’re welcome! Thanks for the comment
Solo Piano Textures is both inspiration and instruction. Although I am somewhere between beginner and intermediate, I insist on trying things that are challenging as are these tips and techniques. I don't not know what nascent ability I have without doing so. Thank you Noah for this video in particular. I look forward to seeing more solo material
Killing it with the tutorials, man. One of the few pianists on TH-cam teaching and playing at a high level!
keep my mind up to the sky with thoses sound. Fit perfectly for lounge piano
Now I understand why even when playing with both hands the music can still sound bland and uninspired. It's definitely not enough to just play chords in one hand and the melody in the other. This is a revelation! Thank you so much, Noah BTW this is the seventh my series playlist of my seven favorite NK videos 😀
That intro is the expression of how music lifts the soul..
Wow, you've been putting out videos exactly when I need them! I love the shoutout for left hand melodies: You could make a whole video about playing melodies in lower and middle voices like Bill Evans, Bach and Chopin.
Henry Sloan very true! Will keep that in mind. Glad you enjoyed it, Henry.
Just the channel I was hoping to find and here it is! Great job!!! One of the few pianists on TH-cam teaching and playing at a high level! Bravo👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nice
Excellent. I am a guitar player and this is exactly the problem I'm working on. I've found a few approaches so far that I like: very minimal with melody and just a few notes, call and response in different registers, playing the melody in 2 or three note open voicings, fills with 4ths, harmonized bass line walkups, walkdowns. All easier said than done, of course, but my biggest fear of of playing solo is boring myself as well as the audience.
Best channel hands down 🎹 restores my faith in humanity
This is exactly what I needed thanks!
Recently I've found playing without a rhythm section really frustrating and limiting but these textures will really help!
Yes, yes, yes !!! This is what I must try and practice!
Some nice little runs in there.
A lot to digest here, in a good way!
Love the sound of the melody in the left (3:16), definitely something I can work on incorporating into my own playing! Thank you for sharing, as always!
Alex Thompson you’re welcome, Alex. Yeah I love that sound too- a lot of fun. How do you feel about solo piano in general? I used to be super uncomfortable with it but now I love it
@@NoahKellman I don't play much with others, so I'm quite fond of that solo sound.. doing as much as I can on my own :)
That, however, doesn't mean I'm very proficient at it!! As always, it's a working progress 😂
@@alexthompson6529 Ah nice! Glad to hear you're comfortable with it :)
Great points, Noah!
Absolutely gorgeous the intro! Thanks . Love you classes! Greetings from Brazil!
Thanks, Christianne! Really glad you enjoyed it. Greetings from NY!
Amazing Noah!!! I am learning a lot from your videos!! Thank you from Spain! Mike.
Damn dude you've got a gift for music and teaching you make it so easy to understand. Thank you.
Thanks Noah, another awesome video! You are definitively a great Pianist and Teacher! Some times I feel so little.. so much to learn..
That D7 (#9)was lovely!
Thanks glad you dug it!
Great content, Noah! Would love to see more videos on solo piano textures and ideas, one of the most frequent weaknesses we pianists have. And you teach it incredibly well, so helpful!
Thanks, Victor 🙏🙏 will keep that in mind!
Yet another amazing video. Thanks Noah
Nice Zelda t-shirt, and great lesson Noah! I would love to see a video on improvising outside using quartal harmony on a standard with lots of chords like Anthropology as you did during your solo on your video with your trio and Chad LB. Thank you so much for this material Noah it's priceless :)
Hey, you're welcome Frantzes! Thanks for the comment. I'll definitely keep that in mind for future videos and think about how I can do a lesson about it.
Excellent video. You know what's a topic that is difficult to find on TH-cam?
Left hand piano solo. How to move the voices on your left hand.
Ah I see, good point. Do you mean like actually taking a solo / improvising with your left hand?
@@NoahKellman Yes, but, mostly, develop contrapuntal bass lines for solo piano.
Wow! This lesson was so cool! Thank you Noah! =) thank for being a truly inspiration for many musicians all over the world! Greetings from Peru 🇵🇪 😃
Thanks, Leo, that means a lot to hear! Sending greetings back from NY. Hope all is well!
Che fantastico stile... 👍
Keep it up! Love your contributions to the online jazz community, your videos are always insightful.
Hey, thanks, really appreciate that! Will definitely keep the videos coming.
Beautiful playing and ideas. Your playing is very relaxed and that makes it great to listen to.
Thanks :) really appreciate that!
@@NoahKellman can u breakdown d intro flex up to 0:47... so musicians with less noledge dan u can learn it nd use as a starter/soundcheck
You're amazing Noah!
Respect sir .. ur helping a lot of musicians like me 👍 truly inspiring ❤️❤️❤️ m watching it over n over again ❤️👍
Hey Vishu, really glad to hear that! Thanks for watching.
Very nice lesson
I like this idea. I'm wondering instead arpeggiating a few octaves having an a b a type run. Then maybe at the top playing it down continuing with the pattern b a b.
What's eluding me is hearing something particularly tasty that I want to learn then but being able to find it when I've got a keys nearby.
Excellent
Thanks, Solomon! Do you enjoy playing solo piano?
Hello Noah thanks for another inspiring video filled with techniques that I previously hadn't conceived. Will in Hampton VA
Once again, a ton of great information. Problem is, stuff goes by so quickly it's really difficult to catch on the fly.
I really wish that the examples were notated {other than by the machine gun barrage of stuff in the corner of the screen)
so they could be grabbed and studied without being overwhelming.
Thank you, great video as always :)
Amazing Noah!
Man, you're so good!! Thanks
I love this kind of colors. Thanks for share them.
Me Llaman Charly Hey, you’re welcome!
I’m not sure about you, but what got me comfortable playing solo was literally studying the Classics ... this was the basis you started from to build the necessary technique and performance skills, particularly using the extreme registers as it’s about playing what’s written. From there the improvisation can seamlessly flow into that creating a parted grounded connection with the instrument. I would love to know if you agree with this statement.
The classical repertoire gave discipline, concentration, patience, analytical skills for structure and technical control, mental and muscle memory and frequent performance exposure. It taught me to imbed and map out the keyboard choreography in an automatic way so I could always imagine what I wanted something to sound like without always having to be at the instrument all the time to find what the notes are ... the music comes first ❤️❤️❤️
You are very talented! I see a great TH-cam channel on the rise! I like your teaching style.
Thanks I appreciate it!!
You amazingly play the piano
Thanks, appreciate that!
Great video! Thanks. Is this a standard jazz tune that you’re playing? If yes, what’s the name of this tune?
Great video man, really loving your stuff lately. I'm a mature age music student at uni (I say mature, I'm only 29 haha) and have a recital coming up in a few weeks. Your videos have really been complementing my learning at school.
Thanks again for what you're doing!
(Nice shirt btw).
Thanks Sean! Means a lot to hear that man. Really glad to hear that the videos our turning out to be helpful.
Been watching your videos a while now man. Really good stuff. What piano is that? Sounds amazing
Thank you, thank you, and one more time thank you!!!!! You are great!!!!!!! 🎹🎹🎹
Thanks, Zane!! Means a lot :)
Love the video and I love the shirt! Would love to hear some Legend of Zelda jazz :)
Very nice :-) Lot of good tips to try out
Glad you enjoyed it!
God bless You.
What is the name of this song that you are playing. You have given so much to do.
Awesome stuff as usual man, really hopeful, thanks !
Hey, you're welcome Hernán. Appreciate the comment!
Cool ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you! Just what i was looking for
Thank you.🤟🤟🤟
I went to your website to purchase some products but I have a question first I don't read music so do you offer visual show how to with your products?
Hey what about stride piano/kicking a bass line in your left hand? Those are techniques i like to use frequently and I find they work pretty well. Its like your own rhythm section in your left hand.
Thank you.
You're welcome!
Hell yeah I’ve felt like that
What song is that movement from? I like it
great! thank you!
Thank you so much for this mate, can’t wait to get this under my fingers for college this year. Need to learn misty! Which of your products should I buy first to help me apply these concepts to standards ?
Hey Jack, great question! What would you say your level is and what are some fo your goals?
Noah Kellman I am an intermediate player with an advanced knowledge of theory, I’d like to improvise better, jam with other musicians better and be able to add to arrangements
holy shit i needed this video. can you do an advanced tutorial on this same subject
Hey will definitely do some more advanced piano texture and/or solo piano videos down the road!
Great stuff! :-)
You sound like Bill Evans and Chopin together but with a lot of sugar. 😅
It could be the vst
@Blake Amyot Waiting for the other bot to reply that it worked
Playing a Intro to Misty in E flat.
0:15 can anyone enlighten me as to what this chord technique is? Sounds really cool for reharms
a mix of fourth voicing (including so what), drop 2 and a/b voicing
@@hamisharchibald740 thankyou man!
what song were you playing at 2:39?:)
Cool!! what virtual piano software do you use (vidéo)? Thanks
That’s awesome. Maybe you can apply some vocabulary for the minor 2-5-1 things. 😀😀
Hey Yang, yeah I think all the concepts in this video do apply to minor 2-5-1s also!
Do you have a tutorial of playing keyboard imitating drums? Thanks! ☺
Hey Mancave, no, not yet, haven't thought about that before. Do you mean like imitating the drums rhythmically?
@@NoahKellman Yeah! I watched some others tutorials but didn't really like theirs. Haha. So if you ever make a video, I'd appreciate it because I like what I hear here! 🙃
@@mancavelegostudios9711 Oh I see! Cool I'll keep that in mind for future vids.
By the way, do you have any video avaiable on the usage od drop 2? The sound is really beautiful as you played in the end of this video. If not, what would you reccomend? Thanks
Hey Christianne, I do have an embarrassingly old one up on youTube somewhere, but I'll have to throw up a refresh!
0:31-0:33 Precious
Many subtítulos porfavor
What digital piano are you using?
Usually using either the East / West Steinway, or Native Instruments' "The Grandeur"
👍

Sorry. What's the Keyboard?
Please subtitulado spanish para la comunidad latina ......!!!!!
ahh sí es algo me gustaría hacer!
Noah Kellman para los hispanos Gracias amigo
👋🏽 me!
Very inspiring but you need a really good level to do a tenth of what you present😅
I think these ideas need to be contrasted with more simplistic playing. Constantly arppegiating with flashy chords becomes boring in itself. Jazz is mostly about rhythm.
I just can’t find an introduction to these techniques. I can’t get any further than an ordinary 2 5 1, which I also find very boring in the meantime. I don’t think you can teach yourself this through the many tutorials on TH-cam, but only through an all-day music school.
Wow...You know what....I quit.
Great pianist but hopeless teacher
