There is a looot of information but Noah makes it incredibly easy to understand . . . and most importantly to follow! I rewatch his videos by section, take notes, and make practice strategies. And I finally know what to do to become an incredible jazz pianist!
Amazing as usual! Thanks so much, Noah! What I love to do is solo using the 1 scale in a 2 5 1 so basically, if I see a minor 7 chord I got taught by my jazz teacher to just solo with the 1 so for instance if I see a C minor 7 I essentially use Bb Ionian/Bb Bebop scale to improvise. But this is quite safe and sounds consonant. I find this really useful but your method is also amazing for playing out. Bye
Hi Noah: Just excellent stuff! I really like the point A to point B metaphor. Helps one become more goal directed Major scale a semitone below and a semitone above the one of the diatonic scale Use arpeggios and an expanded range What a clear explanation! Thank you!
Hey! I've actually done a lot of videos on thing that I think would fit the classification of "non-functional harmony," though to be honest my classical harmony chops and definitions are a little rusty at the moment. Have you checked out any of my reharm videos or videos about creating chord progressions, etc.?
The great player Geoffrey Keezer gives instructions on this in connection with The Open Studio Jazz course but it's pretty complicated so what's offered here could qualify as more "student friendly."
@@NoahKellman Regrettably, no. My mother is a pianist and she made us play for 2 years when we were little kids, and then I gave it up. Started sax at 12 and have been at it, with flute and EWI, for over 40 years. Starting to get the hang of it...;) I just noodle and write with the piano.
Dude c'mon man. 5:35 you are saying "Minor Scales" which to me means Aeolian but you are playing Dorian for all the substitution scales. Ab Dorian over Gm7, F# Dorian over C7 and E Dorian over the FMaj7. Why are you saying minor scale when it's Dorian mode you are playing?
Nice video!! Do you practice those outside-patterns (for example 6:30-6:50) in all the keys? Or is your thought process like: minor chord -> play half step above, dominant chord -> play a tritone away, and so on? Or is it a combination of both?😂
Combination of both- I like to hang out with one at a time, try it in different keys, etc. until I really have the sound in my ear of one specific pattern. It’s pointless if you don’t really get the sound in your ear! That’s what I would recommend. Make sense?
Great lesson but first question, you play 10ths in left hand. I have been stretching my fingers for a while and can play 9ths and almost a 10th in left hand. Any tips on how to finaly play a 10th with 1 hand?
It's actually an improvisational section of a tune I recorded with a trio a while back. If you search Noah Kellman "Stompin' At The Savoy" it should come up.
@@NoahKellman also sometimes I wonder how fast relative pitch can get vs perfect pitch. I can use relative pitch and solfège to figure things out but it takes a split second of processing time
Noah is the best jazz piano teacher on TH-cam, hands down.
Thanks means a lot to hear really appreciate your subscribership!
definitely in my top 5!!
Perhaps but I'm a real fan of Glenn Zaleski who I had private instruction with as well. He's amazing!

This is sooooo sweet✨, I love the playing out concept🔥. To quote the famous Robert Glasper “There is no wrong note, just wrong placement of the note”💯

Great Lesson Noah, is there a full video lesson of this topic ?
Noah! Do a video with Bebop lines!!!!
Great lesson! Thank you very much. Why over C7 you play F# minor?
Great video! Maybe you could do something on non-functional harmony?

Very nice ! Do you have any video / course that would focus on chromaticism ? All I know is diatonic lines, how do I add chromatic notes ?
Please take your time to explain the 2 5 1 jazz on key F major thanks

Exelente amigo tienes algún material en español?
Hola Joel desafortunadamente mi material está solo en inglés, oh en partitura :p
Hey Noah, on the second example, why did you use the 'F' in the Ab minor scale instead of an 'E'?
Hey, great question. I'm thinking of it as Ab Dorian as opposed to Natural Minor, so it has a natural 6. Make sense?
@@NoahKellman oh ok. Got it! 👌🏽

how your camera??
5:33-5:53 I don’t understand how to use this scale
Do you have perfect pitch?
I don’t actually, why do you ask?
@@NoahKellman just wondering! All my friends who can improvise well have perfect pitch, so it’s kinda motivating to find others who don’t have it lol
