Not sure anyone will be reading this as its a pretty old vid lol but I just picked up the HT club 40 a week ago and it is honestly the best sounding and most versatile amp I have ever used. I play a les Paul with vintage pick ups, orange drop capacitors, 50's wiring and all that gubbins and the tones I get in combination with this amp are unreal. Perfectly matched guitar and amp. It can take a bit of fiddling to dial in your tones but once you get that down it honestly gives you so many options and all of them sound brilliant. For the money it's the best amp out there, £200 second hand!!! So for anyone looking to get one, do it! You will not regret it. I never comment on these threads because of the cork sniffers chiming in with the their bullshit but I honestly am so impressed with the amp that I had to. Whoever got through all of this nonsense cheers for reading! Lol
This amp sounds best with my Les Paul plugged into it, but i've been having trouble getting a good sound with my other guitars. Even if it's just a one trick pony, it still does a really good trick, for sure.
@ozlo houser brickballs how often do tubes need to be changed and do they need to be biased or can the tubes just be changed? Can I use headphones on it and can it be cranked but played at a decent volume? Thinking of getting one just want to hear from anyone who owns one
Hi UWR16 - the HT5 is a great little amp, but it has a 10" speaker & no reverb (& is 5w obviously!). The HT20 has a 12" speaker, reverb & is 20w - all this adds up to giving you quite a bit more bass on the HT20. Hope this helps.
Picked up the HT40 yesterday and its awesome, better than any amp Ive ever owned including the Deluxe Reverb and AC30. Its basically 3 amps in one. You get the clean of a Fender, a little dirt like the Vox and the crunch of a Marshall. It does take a little tweaking to get the sound you want dialed in. Took me about half an hour messing with various settings. The people saying its no good obviously didn't play with it too much because it can deliver nearly every sound. The ISF dial is badass as well. Its a steal at $599.
Hi. On the HT20, removing the guitar jack places the amp into a "Standby" state. I believe it's also designed in such a way that it doesn't need a standby when being powered up.
Phantom Power - the coolest named feature on a mixer, that does the most boring thing! It just sends some voltage to a condenser mic so you don't need a battery or external power supply!! I know - it sounds so much cooler than that!
HI Fozlike - if you like a US sounding drive & the bassy clean tones then you'll like the Blackstar, althought the HT40 is better comparison to the MA50. If you like AC/DC, Slash, kind of more mid range sounding drive, then you'll like the MA50.
I'm not sure how you'd mod an HT40 to fit into a rack rig - it'd probably be easier to do that to the HT20 head, or if you need the extra power, then try the HT100 head. Either way, I hope you know what you're doing cos there'll be some serious modifications going on!
Hi Rob - can we tell people that you'll be back in Guildford next month, to demo pretty much whatever people ask you to demo (as long as we can get it all done in a day) - or is it still a secret? Ooops.
Just got my HT club 40 a week ago and I must say, this amp kicks all kinds of ass! Has beautiful clean tones! Awesome, and heavy distorted tones! I love recording with it! has a creamy sound to it! I simply love this amp! I also have an original Peavey 5150, recording with these two beauty's is a dream come true! Seriously, try a Blackstar Club 40, and I mean, SIT with it for atleast 20 to 30 min. you'll fall in love. and you can't beat the value!
@UWR16 Both the HT20 & HT40 have a master volume so you can get good drive sounds at lower volumes - I'd say the HT20 is the best of both worlds - small enough for home, big enough for gigs. Both the HT20 & HT40 have the emulated speaker output so it's really easy to go through your PA if the amp isn't loud enough for your gig. Look out for the vidoe of our Blackstar Night with Jamie Humphries - we filmed it last night - should be on TH-cam later this week. Cheers Capt.
This video made me go out and try a 40....great amp. I DID change the stock speaker to an Eminence WIzard that I had lying around and the amp went from great to sheer brilliant. The EQ on the Wizard is an amazing compliment to the 40's voicing. It is also a more efficient speaker than the stock celestion so the amp is louder. The HT series are fantastic
I bought the HT-6- Stage and, it's the best amp I've owned. I've had the 5150, Ampeg Custom and Mesa Boogie. It has three channels and gave the right kick over the 40 that I wanted. Great amps. I have a Chapman ML-3 Modern and the combination is the best sound I've had.
@Elvastinen its not really louder, its just more clean headroom on the 20 and the 15 will break up on a lower volume, you need over double the wattage to go up just a few decibels
We have another awesome guitar player (Jamie Humphries) doing a Blackstar Guitar Night next Wednesday (17th) - if any of you are near Guildford, it'd be cool to see you there. Details are on the andertons site - we're giving away a Blackstar HT5 on the night too!
Isf on this amp is great. Isf to right side gives it more of a euro Marshall sound. To the left more of a us rectifier sound like a mesa boogie. Great amp for all types of music. I will never get rid of mine
These blackstar amps are a godsend for me! i wanted a "marshall" type amp at a lower price for at home playing that would satisfy my JCM needs that i use at band practice and the HT 20h with the ext 12" cabs does a very convincing JCM tone if you tweak it. I hear a lot of guys say it will not or does not sound like a JCM 800 or 900 but i had no problem getting it to go there!
Chapppppeerrrsss. Would you reccomend the HT20 or an MA50C for small/medium gigs revolving around GNR/ACDC/Aerosmith?Alter Bridge esque material? Or would you go with something completely different?
Hey Levinjapan, it is cool that you know who Rex Carroll is. He was at my church just a few weeks ago and played. I would agree with you that Drew looks like him other then the amount of hair. Rex has A LOT less. HEHE. Really like the club 40 very cool when are we going to see them in the USA?
Dr. Chappers how is the intro song called for these andertons videos.. The short guitar tune at the start of these videos I mean. It sounds quite awesome! Also Merry Christmas and all that ^^
@AustinSk84life95 why not use an overdrive into the gain channel? The Zakk Wylde one is brilliant, but there are plenty of options...Fulltone, MXR OCD, TubeScreamer etc.
I'm a big fan of the Blackstar amps, just waiting for the 20 head to come in to the shops as I want to compare it to the HT5 which I loved when I played it a few months ago. Great sounding amps!
It would have been cool to hear a little more from the high gain demonstrations with humbuckers, but I appreciate the great demonstration. I don't know why, but I keep talking myself out of these amps and then coming back to them. I used an HT-1 in the studio and I was intrigued by the girth and thump of it's larger brethren.
sticksnstones23 two preamp tubes in an ht 40 were one tube for clean only one tube for od only and that PI was solidstate and diodes were used for clipping. Power section is el34. I can't find it now and was wondering if anyone could provide any input on this. The PI is solid-state (MOSFET-based) at least in HT-1, HT-5, HT-20 and HT-40, likely in many other Blackstar HT-series amps too. HT-Dual pedal and HT-5 amp also generate some of the overdrive tones with diode clipping, likely many of the other HT-series amps employ that too. A lot of the internal circuitry in all HT-series products relies heavily on signal shaping with solid-state components.
+Bob Gibson Its not just blackstar who do it, some of Marshall's most expensive amps have dual diode clipping. Simplest solution? if it doesn't sound good to you, don't buy it!
All Venues Series are hybrid amps. The phase inverter is solid state as the fx loop driver is. The Od channel is pushed by a built-in op-amp circuit (like having a OD pedal on in front of the amp at all times) which is not a bad idea and a simpler solution. These amps are very good at their prince range just don't expect much from them that pulling off the job.
More awesome tones, Rob! Is that the Guilford branch? If so, I bought so much from them over the years! Great stuff, as ever! Have a wonderful weekend. ;o)
Hey bikerpastor71, I'm glad someone knows which guitaristt I'm referring to. You're right about Rex's hair...Even 20 years ago Rex didn't have as much hair as Drew. hehe Man, I envy you because you have seen Rex live. I probably will never see him here in Japan and still look forward to getting an HT-20. The only reason why I didn't like it is because it has no standby switch. I'm glad my HT-5 has one :) God bless!!
Bought an HT20 with JJ el34 ' s and 883 already fitted. Not bad. Fitted a Celestion Vintage 30. Now a proper rock amp. Sounds amazing on clean channel and a BB Xotic pre amp makes it sing sweet. What an upgrade for 70 quid.
I did the same thing. I'm about to change the tubes but not yet. That v30 is a great upgrade for the ht20. What I like is that it gets so loud but not muddy. Cheers
Oh dude, can you test out these bad boys with some EMG awesomeness? I trust your reviews and such it's just that I am going on tour soon and hearing EMG's through a Blackstar might sway me from the awesomness of the ENGL Fireball I'm after...
More channels means more options for you tonally. The 20 is PLENTY loud. The 60 watt models also have resonance and presence controls which can be REALLY nice.
@LiamRTube use something to boost your distortion. from what i tried, it just diddn't have enough saturation for metalcofre tones. Just put a od/distortion pedal through it, crank the volume but bring the gain all the way down or back and you can get some sick heavy tones.
Pedal friendly? I like colecting pedals. I've tried my newest distortion pedal (Hardwire Valve Distortion) at Guitar Center with a Blackstar Artisan 30, but its a little to pricey for me. This amp series seems to have just as good a tone as the other, but want to know if its just as pedal friendly as the other.
Hi! I'm from Argentina and I really like this amp, my question is this: the HT40 amplifier to listen on the review is of Chinese origin and that meeting is manufactured here or in England? thank you very much!
i bought ht 100 head and cab, Very versatile, ISF feature can make it go from marshall sounding to american style super heavy, would definately reccomend. clean channel needs more headroom though, IMO.
This is a really good Amp. I prefer the Fender Bassbreaker 15 with the Celestion Greenback to the Blackstar 20 Watt, but when I bought my Bassbreaker the Bassbreaker 15 with Celestion Greenback was only 50 bucks more. The Celestion speaker that comes stock in this is their least expensive speaker. If you swapped it out for a Greenback or Creamback it would drastically improve the sound. I came here because they're being sold used at Guitar Center for 300-400 bucks! I just bought the 60 Soloist to convert to a Bass Amp for $379.
HT Studio 20 is the best $600 amp on the market! This thing is amazing. I tried Jet City, Bugera, and Vox.... none of them came close to this thing. I am hoping I can mic it and play live, if so, it'll replace the 4 ton Fender Super Reverb I gig with. Its that good!
@MichaelAndrewSapp Yeah. I believe the theory is that you have to double the wattage to get another 3db in volume. So the difference between 20 and 40 watts would be about 3db. That goes for larger wattage amps as well. The difference between 50 and 100 watt amps is just 3db in volume.
Is this research for monkey lord amp ....*fingers crossed*.... I've been drooling over the blackstar serise one 200 for ages and probably get something smaller in the future. Just to add i bought my randall cab from the good people of andertons and it's still going strong !
mr captain lee or mr chappers which woud you recommend im trying to get a band together and it will also be used for recording, so which will be the best for these :D
will the HT-20 or 40 play well at lower levels like the HT-5 for home use? I am debating between the 3 combos and what will give me the best bang for my buck and play most rock at lower levels but be available to crank when ready!
I'm in need of bying a new amp after my Marshall JTM30 gave up on me, First I saw the blackstar HT club 40, but then I saw the HT Club 50 Head, and now I cant make up my mind, which is more value for the money? the Combo or the Head with a 1*12" cab, or a 2*12" cab? (i'm blowing up my mind here :S ) how much does those extra 10w matter? fast replys appriciated :)
wait, so basically do you just pull the lead out from the amp a bit to put it into standby? does the lead have to be taken out from the guitar as well?
Don Hedge bro, I have the ht20 and have played probably 20 gigs with it so far. And the sound guy is always asking me to turn it down a bit. But it's still really easy to get a nice tube tone. I recommend it. And the ht20 is great for bedroom practice. Very diverse
Not sure anyone will be reading this as its a pretty old vid lol but I just picked up the HT club 40 a week ago and it is honestly the best sounding and most versatile amp I have ever used. 8 years later....? Do you still have and use....?
I just exchanged my Marshall DSL for the HT Club 40 yesterday and its so much better
metalmusician6798 I'm trying to sell my Marshall TSL so I can get a HT 20
I kept my DSL and bought the ht20 love em both
Nah I just want the blackstar
+Enrique Correa
Marshall DSL15H 15W or Blackstar HT studio 20H 20W?
Almost the same price.
Thanks!
seen you comment was stuck between the 2 amps now I'm decided. blackstar it is

I've been looking at these amps for a while, thanks Chappers for posting this, I'm set on the Studio 20 now!
Cheers - come to Guildford - we're open 7 days a week. Maybe come down next time Chappers is in...
Yes - I am not contracted exclusively to anyone at the moment, but live I use mostly Marshall ;-)
Love you to mate ;-)
I dumped 3 Marshall dsl's and a vox nightrain for my blackstar it 20 and can. so happy!
Cool - Glad to be of service dude! ;-)
I had no idea mate! I'll be at Andertons once every month - I'll pst the dates on my forum so feel welcome to pop in and say hi ;-)
Nice, I'm a proud owner of the HT-5 and I'm glad to hear there will be options for a more gigable wattage. Kudos Blackstar and the ChapMan!
HI Fozlike - if you like a US sounding drive & the bassy clean tones then you'll like the Blackstar, althought the HT40 is better comparison to the MA50. If you like AC/DC, Slash, kind of more mid range sounding drive, then you'll like the MA50.

You guys are a treat. great amp. great demo. thanks!!!
hey chappers i just bought my first really good guitar a 2010 gibson sg std and man she sounds great i also have a blackstar
happy jamming rob

Nice vid; good product; best of luck with the venture :D
It sounds like a Solid State Amp to my ears. A good Solid State amp.
sticksnstones23
two preamp tubes in an ht 40 were one tube for clean only one tube for od only and that PI was solidstate and diodes were used for clipping. Power section is el34.

I hear the solid state fizz as well. If it uses a diode for clipping then they should call it a hybrid. Misleading.

this rocks, chappers is that the the andrtons in gilford cos' i went there the other day, 'twas awsome,
what's the song on 3:18 ??
pls Rob answer =P It's just jaw dropping...
so chill =D
All the best!
I really like the LP vs strat contrast they did with the amps.
I know what you mean mate - I really want that Strat I was playing...
More awesome tones, Rob! Is that the Guilford branch? If so, I bought so much from them over the years! Great stuff, as ever! Have a wonderful weekend. ;o)
Hey bikerpastor71, I'm glad someone knows which guitaristt I'm referring to. You're right about Rex's hair...Even 20 years ago Rex didn't have as much hair as Drew. hehe
Man, I envy you because you have seen Rex live. I probably will never see him here in Japan and still look forward to getting an HT-20. The only reason why I didn't like it is because it has no standby switch. I'm glad my HT-5 has one :)
God bless!!
Dude, when were you in Andertons!? You could have popped in for a brew! You were only a few miles away ;-)
Cheers
Ha Ha - and you can see the mighty Rex Carroll impersonator live tonight at our Blackstar Event - we still have some tickets!!
i play an esp ltd and a fender strat on my Club 40. it sings at low volumes and howls on highs!! AMAZING AMP
I have the HT studio 20 and I think it's fucking unbelievable.
I have just tested one and I'm gonna buy it in the next months :)
and what do you think about the HT5 ? I test it and I find that it was a cool amp... not so expensive ^^
Oh dude, can you test out these bad boys with some EMG awesomeness? I trust your reviews and such it's just that I am going on tour soon and hearing EMG's through a Blackstar might sway me from the awesomness of the ENGL Fireball I'm after...
Have your known the Andertons Lot for a while? there my local shop, really cool guys in there
More channels means more options for you tonally. The 20 is PLENTY loud.

Wow i heard sounds ranging from Stevie Ray Vaughn to ACDC, Blackstar you impressed me !
Hi! I'm from Argentina and I really like this amp, my question is this: the HT40 amplifier to listen on the review is of Chinese origin and that meeting is manufactured here or in England? thank you very much!
I really want to get some of the Blackstar distortion pedals too, they sound IMMENSE!
Hey Mr. Chappers im getting the Club 40 soon got any kick ass tones to share?
Just what I need, another reason to go to a guitar shop!!
i bought ht 100 head and cab, Very versatile, ISF feature can make it go from marshall sounding to american style super heavy, would definately reccomend. clean channel needs more headroom though, IMO.
chapman all you play sound good!
Nice, I love my Blackstar HT5
This is a really good Amp. I prefer the Fender Bassbreaker 15 with the Celestion Greenback to the Blackstar 20 Watt, but when I bought my Bassbreaker the Bassbreaker 15 with Celestion Greenback was only 50 bucks more. I came here because they're being sold used at Guitar Center for 300-400 bucks! I just bought the 60 Soloist to convert to a Bass Amp for $379.
Chappers is one hell of a guitar player!!
just picked up a used but mint condition ht-40 for £350
And?
Rj Bron calm down
George Grenfell actually thats quite a deal. i just payed 500 but got 4 years warranty luckily
What bought you to the land of Guilford, or was it just to demo these legendary amps
My current residence of Guildford, great to see it in a Chappers video :)
@ThieleM If I may ask, what is the exact speaker you put in there?
Also, do you use gain or clean tones more? Did it effect both?
HT Studio 20 is the best $600 amp on the market! This thing is amazing. I tried Jet City, Bugera, and Vox.... none of them came close to this thing. I am hoping I can mic it and play live, if so, it'll replace the 4 ton Fender Super Reverb I gig with. Its that good!
bulls on parade! those are some pretty good amps.
i love that intro!

Just to add i bought my randall cab from the good people of andertons and it's still going strong !
mr captain lee or mr chappers which woud you recommend im trying to get a band together and it will also be used for recording, so which will be the best for these :D
Can you play gigs with the 20 watt one? Like gigs with 100-200 people.
MUST BUY!!!
@AndertonsMusic Lee
Even though chappers is great on guitars with humbuckers, when he plays a strat some kind of blues mixed with death comes out and it sounds beuatiful.
Didn't you also have something with Matchless?
A Blackstar making Orange Juice out of an Orange Amp would be a good comparison video for those with gas attacks like myself.
will the HT-20 or 40 play well at lower levels like the HT-5 for home use? I am debating between the 3 combos and what will give me the best bang for my buck and play most rock at lower levels but be available to crank when ready!
@gunsnflamethrowers
I think its either this, an AC15 or a Fender Hotrod Deluxe III :-)
Thank you for the comment :-D
Are these Tube/Vavle amps?
So are you endorsed by them now?
I'm in need of bying a new amp after my Marshall JTM30 gave up on me, First I saw the blackstar HT club 40, but then I saw the HT Club 50 Head, and now I cant make up my mind, which is more value for the money? the Combo or the Head with a 1*12" cab, or a 2*12" cab? (i'm blowing up my mind here :S )
how much does those extra 10w matter?
fast replys appriciated :)
Ha ha - yeah mate that solo was done in one take and two breaths... weird how it all just comes out sometimes ;-)
wait, so basically do you just pull the lead out from the amp a bit to put it into standby? does the lead have to be taken out from the guitar as well?
I'm going to be gigging small to medium , should I get the 20 or the 40 ? both sound great :)
It depends on if the venue has a PA system. I would buy the 40 watt version just in case the venue can't mic you up.
Caleb Allen agreed. you can easily buy a used one for around 400$. I'm doing so this week when get paid!
Don Hedge bro, I have the ht20 and have played probably 20 gigs with it so far. And the sound guy is always asking me to turn it down a bit. But it's still really easy to get a nice tube tone. I recommend it. And the ht20 is great for bedroom practice. Very diverse
Caleb Allen where are you playing that doesn't have a PA? lol. And they have emulated outputs just in case they don't have amp mics.
I tried 20w combo. Great clean, great high gain but thats it. I couldn't get usable crunch out of it.
Robs hand at 4;10!!! cracked me up!
