The hardest quote I’ve ever heard is the “Death can have me when it earns me”. I’m no warrior or anything, but I shit you not that line sparked something. I’m actively getting my shit together because a random 30 second conversation in a video game motivated the shit out of me.
He did exactly what a father is supposed to do. He prepared his son to handle the trials ahead. The harshness was in proportion. A parent's job is to prepare their child for the world. To protect a child from the world is to cripple them later on. There will always be bullies, there will always be unforseen circumstances, hardships, and heartache.
Kratos is a man who's experienced years of the horrors of war, tragedy, loss, revenge in his youth and despite all that, he still manage to experienced peace during his time with Faye. Kratos has experienced the good and bad side of life. It's only natural that he's become a man with great wisdom at this point. Wisdom that he passes down to others, especially to Atreus. It's rare for a game franchise to give us a character like this these days where we both witnessed and experienced his past and character growth from his journey and give his wisdom to his child.
Mimir: Brother, somewhere out there, there's a riddle you'd enjoy. And I'm going to find it. Kratos: Do not. Mimir: "Once spoken, instantly broken. What am I?" Kratos: Silence. Mimir: Correct! Kratos: I was not answering the riddle. Mimir: Ah. 😂😂
He's a pragmatic man. The riddle he actually liked (the one with the lions that haven't been fed in weeks) was related to a logical problem, which is why he liked it. Otherwise, he believes they're "frivolous" and a waste of time for someone who moves everywhere with a purpose. I know nobody asked for this but I just had to geek out a bit
So proud of how far Kratos has come. From a grief-stricken bloodthirsty destroyer of worlds, to a wise warrior with honor and a learning pupil. I fucking love it.
My favorite quote(s) will always be, “death can have me, when it earns me.” You can apply that in so many situations. Also “harness that anger, don’t let it consume you.”
It speaks to the quality of the writing when so many of the lines of the protagonist are so memorable. Kratos' terseness and frankness makes his lines great. Wise people seldom speak, for they listen. Kratos has grown to embody manliness in not only his physique, but what truly matters in his wisdom and willingness to love and let go. You could put some of his words in the book of Proverbs. One of my favorite lines in the game is when Faye says, "To have grieve deeply is to have loved completely," or something to that effect. Going with that is, "The culmination of love is grief." Shows the grief that wears on Kratos not only from Faye, but even still from killing his wife and child when Ares betrayed him.
