    Besides the obvious "Hands up/Chin down," this is probably the most common mistake I see in clips people send me for review or in people in the gym. Everybody does this at first and the reason is understandable, but if you can fix this your striking will improve.

      Omfg this is too relatable I was on a trip and we went to a gym my friend went "I have a very unique style that's not mma or any martial art you see, just my style of fighting". He then goes on to throw combos tekken style (awkward side stance, repetitive attacks, only moves front and back like a fencer, etc)
      Edit : And more! The thing is that h free doesn't throw combos at all, he pokes, and when I said combo above it's chain combos that cannot stop once it starts, he would do three consecutive swipes and I move out while he finishes his kata. All his moves are very kata-ish, no dynamics. I obviously beat his ass in. He fights like a 2D character, doesn't know sidesteps or angling or to circle just forward backwards

      I mean in mma kicks are just as important
      You should start with wrestling and then add the fundamentals of striking
      the amount of ppl that don't know how to wrestle in mma is a lot worse than overextending . . . That happens in the midst of a fight when intimidation physical attributes and overall mental state come in to play no really a lack of technique that causes that

    • @thefourofapocalypse7955

      Andrew Giegerich No, people swing because they are not trained. I've yet to see dejdamrong swing as bad as macgregor does. But good point on the wrestling. Grappling and striking should go together hand to hand. Striking technique is bit harder to develop, i guess

He never complained about my backfoot. I know its only boxing and those other variants but i just wanted to share this little story

    • @MrRazmut
      @MrRazmut 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A heavy lead foot will help your forward movement and help you load power into your lead hand, and you have more room to pull back and absorb shots when you get hit. But it´s also hard to lift your leg to check kicks when you have a lot of weight on it, which is really important. Kickboxers also don´t turn the lead foot in as much for the same reason. Boxers turn their lead foot in a bit to help with lead hand power and in-out movement, kickboxers point their lead toes at their opponent so they can check kicks. A light lead foot also really helps you throw kicks, it is really hard to throw good round kicks when your weight is forward all the time. Throwing a right round kick you wanna have your weight on the right foot, then you step your left foot out a bit and turn it out, and switch your weight onto that left foot and pivot it as you throw the leg. With a switch kick you also want to have quite a bit of weight on your back foot so you can lift your lead leg and bring it back, switching your back foot to the front and at an angle to the side as your lead foot is about to touch the ground, then your new rear foot pushes your weight onto your new planted lead foot as you let the leg go.

    I took about 8 years off training and got back into it about 2 years ago. I had always been flexible, but after taking so much time off my shoulders and hips were so tight. I was leaning just like this because I my body remembered where my strikes should be, but I literally couldn't move well enough to do it correctly. It took a long time to get my hip mobility and loose shoulders back.

    NICE analysis! Very common mistake. Im a USA Boxing coach, one of my athletes is ranked #3 at 112 lbs in Elite Division, so I have some experience. With athletes, I start many training sessions with having boxers hold light dumbbells and jog in place, but they have to raise each hand UP to the ceiling in time withe each foot. When the right foot is on the ground , the right hand is extended straight up, when the left foot is on the ground, the left hand is up. We do it for 3 minute round. If their shoulders tire, drop the weights and continue empty handed. Next round, start the same, "punching the sky" but then gradually let your hands drift down to normal punching level, but KEEP the "same-hand-same-foot" timing. Next round jog in place while hitting the bag, same timing. If your hitting the bag with both your lead and your power hands... you are in the pocket and if your jogging same hand same foot, you've erased hanging out on that lead foot. Hanging out on your lead foot robs you of power, makes your chin stick out, limits mobility. Repeating "same-hand-same-foot" conditions the nerves, muscles, brain, and proprioceptors to perform correctly and eventually the boxer doesn't even THINK about it, just does it, even under stress.

  • @michaelwingender9717
    @michaelwingender9717 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Icy Mike... I had to come back to this video to tell you what a VALUABLE tip this was for me.. It made me look at my foot when punching and I realized that I was twisting my foot, hips, and shoulders, BUT some of my strikes were ending up on my toe instead of the ball of my foot.
    As soon as I planted the weight on it properly I felt a much more explosive power being delivered and a more natural full body rotation. Now I understand what they mean by sitting down on your punches. XD THANK YOU!

    Another great video. So many novices don’t have their feet under them for literally years . I’m coming from boxing so slight differences. Incremental range steps are maybe more if a fundamental thing in Boxing. The kick checking stance and not wanting to plant with your lead definitely brings a new thought to an already complex game.

    But when i was in the ring i put most of my weight on my front foot without leaning forward.
    It made it a lot quicker to close the gap. Just lift the front foot and you close the gap without shifting your weight and broadcasting what your doing. Works better for springing back and maintaining balance to. Also increases punching power.

    Great technicals. I will say that practicing old boxing stanses will help with that jab, and cross; there a basics in boxing that I have seen not taught in mma. Like when you jab and bring both legs fallow, or throwing the cross, and learning when it is effective to open the hips for that cross. I would say 5he best thing to come out of boxing is foot work the punches, and the head movement, but will still get hit when in the pocket. That is just a fact. They are successful with their head movement when moving around the opponent.

    Great video about fighting though.

    Move behind the jab to get in range for a cross and sit your weight down as your hand makes contact. For some reason it is very hard to get people to understand that concept.

    Interestingly enough I have never seen myself make this mistake when I go back over my form. I'd say I'm in the intermediate hobbyist range, but I have solid footwork due to fencing. A fencer, a good one that is, shouldn't be leaning forward. At most it's 50/50 for weight distribution. All I can say is that footwork drills change everything.

    Hey! Awesome content! Very thankful for the amazing free Instruction. Quick question. I noticed Conor Mcgregor has been very successful lifting up his back leg. Can you explain how he is able to pull this off so successfully?

    Great video as always but i m surprosed you didnt mention the very important thing about passing your shoulder in front of your chin when throwing the cross( dont know how to explain it better in english sorry),gaining 10 or 15 cm,more power and not exposing that particular area of your face. You ll also gain more time for seeing the counter coming by gaining distance. Is it understandable?i hope so. Cheers!

    Good points on how not to drag that back foot, that will open you up for everything in the play book lol; but, that traditional Muay Thai stance will only cement a fighter to the ground and in his stance (Granted if you are strictly teaching The Art of Eight Limbs) but I always believed a fighter--in any combat sport--should be balanced on both and on the balls of his feet, no matter the weight class. Watching Pac-Man, Wonder Boy, Pernell Whitaker, Tyson, etc., all these guys can move and generate power while staying protected. Good video and to each his own.

      He lifts his back foot, but only to the ball, which can't be avoided when maneuvering. He's still got weight on it. The lesson is about not putting all your weight on your front foot and lifting your rear foot up on the toes to give you reach.

      If your heavy on your back foot when punching, your not transferring enough weight aka power into your punch. With a jab I can understand being heavey on the backfoot. With a straight right, you most definitely want to be light on your backfoot to transfer your weight(power). The heal should be point into the ceiling, and the toes stuck and front ball of foot firmly lodged into the ground, and that right hip pivoting fwd, helping the transfer of your weight into the punch.

    You should make a video on how beginners will throw a hook or another punch and then drop the hand they aren't punching with leaving them vulnerable.
