Question for Viewers: Do you work on head movement in isolation? Do you have success with it in sparring?

      1. Yes, I do. 2. Yes, I'm pretty slick.
I thought this was a great video. I've been watching your videos for a while, and I've saved a few to some fighting instructions playlists. This one is really great, though. Your explanations were really clear. I've watched a thousand videos on head movement, and your explanation sounded fresh and novel. Your use of the equipment and gym partners, the cutting and camera angles...this was a remarkably good video.

I feel like in sparing it isn't as effective because your opponent isn't trying to do damage so they don't commit as much so its a mixed bag of results

Honestly ..my head movement throughout training and the five boxing matches I've had was near-non-existant. I relied heavily on blocks and parrys. Set up a giant tennis ball (dog toy) on a string to use for a slipbag and when I went to spar last week the blocks and parrys wern't there but for the first time I was not just rolling but slipping on time too.

Very good advice. I remember fighting with a person that was almost too good at avoiding punches.
But I figured out, that in order to avoid my punch (which I almost half assed anyway just to provoke him) he had to move his whole upper body, while I only needed to move my arm. There was a clear misbalance in energy expenditure and it was obvious to me that he will tire out quite fast if he is going to continue his big evasions.
So I just half assed my punches and looked at him dancing around like a butterfly. In just few minutes he was out of breath and it became very clear to him that I am just now getting started ;)
I wasn't used at all to fighting with a person so skilled at evasion, but it didn't pose a problem in this instance at all.

Amazing... i am in my 5 month in kickboxing and i am practicing all your video tips in the dojo. i was a karateca (7 years of shotokan karate) and i had to change the mindset of staying in the spot looking for a counter attack to "always moving" mindset. i am happy with the results:
1- i am now hard to hit.
2- i still got hit many a few time in sparring but now as a moving target the hits are just small ones.
3 - i can use my karate knowledge with the kicks.

Another useful thing is to remember that the slip line is the opponent's center line and acts as a point of reference for where to punch between head movements. Once you're comfortable with moving and walking first, of course.
Oh, and something i didn't realize until after i shortened my head movements is that if you move your head too much your opponent won't punch. This sounds good until you realize that they're not open. The goal isn't to not get hit. The goal is to make them *miss*. When they miss, they get out of position and become vulnerable. If they don't think they can reach they won't try and they'll just get close enough that you have nowhere to go.

Here's my two cents.. if I'm fighting someone who does a lot of head movement, then I'm aiming for.the body with front and side kicks and probably will step off to the side with body shots as well.
I have the creeping suspicion that on some occasions, excessive head movement is a way to cover a lack of foot work.

    • @BartyCrease
      @BartyCrease 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

By the looks of things his tutorials are for novices who have no idea about head movement in the first place but as for an experiences fighter yeah that does make a lot of sense and thats a good observation I never really thought about it that way, head movement should be mixed with good footwork to be most effective

I've seen a lot of Hard2Hurt videos and I'm only just now realizing how much thought goes into camera angles and jump cuts to elaborate further on a point, and then returns back to a similar, previous sort of; "but I digress" type of thing. The way the camera follows Mike's head during the roll demonstration underneath the hand wraps... *chefs fucking kiss* 👌

Yes validation! I used a tennis ball on a string strung up across the garage for a while. I'd slip under the string and work my way across the room punching the ball along the string, or just tagging it while slipping. Also standing in front of it so it'll bounce back at your face on the tension of the string seemed to give me a make shift "maze bag" and it was hard to hit it on the rebound or combo it. Ever since I heard somebody say "you only really need to dodge a fists width out of the way" I been training with that in mind.
