I was only thinking yesterday that I hadn't seen a what if video for a while, and here you are! Some great ideas for kits as usual. Brings back memories of rushing to the model shop as a nipper with his Christmas money to buy a few models. Thank you for the memories!
Those Airfix blister packs are synonymous with my youth and will always hold a very special place in my heart and I would have bought every single one of these blister kits, seeing that gorgeous artwork whilst at the same time being able to see those parts just crying out to be assembled, for me was irresistible .
...the blsiter pack artwork came our REALLY WELL (If I do say so myself). What lovely little kits they would havce been :) Thanks for watching and for the kind words.
One bad thing about being an American fan of the Andersons is that there are so few of us. I had sought information on the road builder for years but nobody seemed to know what I was talking about until the Internet finally came into existence. It’s a shame how little airtime British sf gets here. Dr. Who is relatively popular among sf geeks but outside of them, a lot of people are somewhat surprised that the British have science fiction. The road builder impressed the heck out of me when I first saw it, and I instantly knew that if I wanted a model of it that I would have to scratchbuild it because no model kit company would invest in making the molds. Well, here we are in the age of home gamers having access to CAD software and resin printers. Anyone up to making and marketing garage kits of the incredible “cop star” machines of Thunderbirds?

Crablogger was absolutely my favourite Thunderbirds machine when I was little. Nowadays it seems ecologically appalling - cutting straight through a forest clear-cutting everything, and nuclear powered! Nonetheless, I prefer the Thunderbirds future to the one we ended up with. Can we swap, please?
machines that swallow the wilderness whole and poop out a finished road at the back side were something of a trope in 60s and 70s sci fi made for children, and it was very much a metaphor for the tension between (for want of better words) "the march of progress" and "tree-hugging hippies"
Another great video, Thanks very much. I agree the kits would probably have been popular. Though I feel they would have been in the bags rather than blisters at that time? The common use of the four wheeled track system in the originals would have kept production and design costs down for Airfix. I agree that reproduction box tops would probably be popular nowadays with collectors. But would the Anderson estate object on copyright grounds? I wonder if we might some of these models available as 3D prints.
These are intended to be 1970s boxes, which is when I first saw the show in one of its many repeat showings. This is the style of boxes I grew up.with.
@@Matteline - I am really impressed to learn that you painted all of these. Much kudos. Have you experimented with Loras and AI art generators yet. It might not be long before we can generate STLs just from your artwork...
Many of these vehicles could inspire amazing crew patches. I would love to see an International Rescue Patch, featuring the vehicle, like they do with airport fire patches in the US. Your artwork would translate really well across media. Out of all the kits you have designed, which one do you think would be most successful if it were put into production?
So many people watch your "what if" videos (for good reason) yet so few watch / comment on the regular videos Airfix produce requesting ideas for new kits. I even wrote to Fanderson at one point suggesting a mass lobbying of Airfix to request a kit of Stingray for this anniversary year but nothing.....😢😢😢
Yes indeed. Inaccurate and gimmicky kits from.Japan. And garage/resin kits in recent years. This video, and the series, is about kits that would.have been FAB when I was growing up... and had more time to make models. I really the idea of the kits being in standard scales - like the real aircfragt, cars etc - and of an appropriate size. A model.of.the Crablogger needs some heft.
Well, as you are probably aware, that plane was made from the RTL2 model created for the Thumderbirds episode 'The Cham Cham'. I did some box art for that aircraft, which can be seen in the 2nd video of the series (with the.Sidewinder thumbnail). For me, the RTl2 is one of the best-looking aircraft of all the Anderson shows. For me, the V173 (from.'Flight to Atlantica') is not nearly as elegant. And if there were an imagiamry kit of thw RTL2, it could be easily modified to the V173 as waa the case with the original model.
A pity that the models had to be produced by Imai rather than Airfix. They can still be found but hold their price well. I could be wrong but didn't Airfix produce Fireball XL5 as a kit ?.
The 6-wheeler and half track were butugly. Worse still: If real they would have been much wider even then a Humvee, just like the flying car from Joe 90. Imagine encountering one of these on a single or double lane road. 🤣

machines that swallow the wilderness whole and poop out a finished road at the back side were something of a trope in 60s and 70s sci fi made for children, and it was very much a metaphor for the tension between (for want of better words) "the march of progress" and "tree-hugging hippies"
I even wrote to Fanderson at one point suggesting a mass lobbying of Airfix to request a kit of Stingray for this anniversary year but nothing.....😢😢😢
..maybe Anderson Entertainment. Fanderson.... well its not reallybtheir thing.
Some of these have been done as models, just not by Airfix.
Hiw about doing the B-173 bomber from "Flight To Atlantica" (Captain Scarlet)?
Well, as you are probably aware, that plane was made from the RTL2 model created for the Thumderbirds episode 'The Cham Cham'. I did some box art for that aircraft, which can be seen in the 2nd video of the series (with the.Sidewinder thumbnail). For me, the RTl2 is one of the best-looking aircraft of all the Anderson shows. For me, the V173 (from.'Flight to Atlantica') is not nearly as elegant. And if there were an imagiamry kit of thw RTL2, it could be easily modified to the V173 as waa the case with the original model.
Yes please to the Sunprobe rocket and the Zombite fighter (must finish my 1/144 Starfighters....)
I hear you. I made a crude cardboard tune model.of the SunProbe rocket over a weekend. I
A pity that the models had to be produced by Imai rather than Airfix. They can still be found but hold their price well. I could be wrong but didn't Airfix produce Fireball XL5 as a kit ?.
Here is a link to video #14 which includes some info on the Airfix XL5.

The 6-wheeler and half track were butugly. Worse still: If real they would have been much wider even then a Humvee, just like the flying car from Joe 90. Imagine encountering one of these on a single or double lane road. 🤣
Yep. Not particualrly practical. But the half-track is at least intended.off--roading.
And I actually love the look.of.the Half Track.
what with 3d printers they could be done.......
