  • Black, Indigenous, and People of Color are the target of prejudice, systemic discrimination, microaggressions, and physical acts of violence due to the color of their skin. Experiences of racism not only cause distress in the moment but can also lead to mental health issues that become more severe with each experience. Expand the description to find a list of free, 24/7 hotlines, and text lines below.

I am from Brazil, my mother is half Italian half Portuguese and my father is half black half native. In South America is very normal to be mixed and most of the population is so I never had any problem with my identity and accepting myself. I usually feel more comfortable around other latinos because we know we are all mixed and we don't make a big deal out of it.
Since I moved abroad, I've been living in Germany for a while and I get asked constantly almost on a daily basis about my features, why I'm this way and not that way... I sometimes pass as white so people feel free to say racist things about others in front of me and that makes me so heartbroken and frustrated. Specially because these are so called "good people" in the eyes of society.
When I went to the US I am labeled as black because many people still have that "one drop rule" mentality... So imagine how it must feel to be called one thing in one country and something completely different in other countries...
In each place I go I am labeled as a different person and I am so so so so so soooooooo tired of it. Why can't people just let me be... I now even avoid going out of the house here because I'm so tired of racismm.

Don't let people define what you are. You already understand your identity and you don't have to change it in a new environment. Im ambiguously ethnic and the dumb questions I get just never stop. It doesn't matter what people want to label you as, the way people make such a big deal about race is so ridiculous.

I’m my experience from travelling you go to South America or African, carribean country it can be unsafe to be white / east asian, also you’ll encounter a lot of racism. Now if you go to a East Asian country people of colour especially African descent get treated poorly depending on the country you’re probably not going to be in danger though, whites get treated one of two ways over glorified because people think you’re rich / good looking or looked down upon as obnoxious and loud etc. The Japanese sometimes depending on who like to look down on the Chinese as well. North America probably going to get hated on for this, America in my opinion is the least racist country and I’ll tell you why I think that. In my experience Americans hate everyone even them self they’re rude to everyone lol or they’re nice to everyone there seems to be less judging over all in North America I fealt less judged in America but where I was I’d be lying if I said I fealt safe lol. A lot of other countries their culture even if they don’t say it to you there’s a lot of judging going on, a lot of cultures will completely judge you based off complexion and it’s not seen as racist it’s seen as normal, in America I’ll give them credit because it’s the only country I’ve been to that even sees racism as a issue

I went to an Irish festival and a women asked me what race I was because I have olive skin even though everyone else in my family is fair. She told me I don't look even 1/2 Irish. I felt like I didn't belong there after that and figured people didn't like me because I wasn't "white enough". Racism is a very strange and uncomfortable thing that even affects white people.
