Fay was a doll! Met her in NY in the late 70's. What a vivacious lady. And never lost her lust for life. She is missed by her many friends. This was a great Academy moment (on one of the all time best years). Billy is absolute Class honoring Fay who richly deserved the recognition.
Billy Crystal has always been knowledgeable and appreciative of the entertainers on stage and film who came before him, very much so. He really is a class act, having met him myself many years ago.
You are right--but I am guessing that many in the crowd simply did not know, or understand, her importance to early, classic Hollywood...in other words, a stupid crowd!..But some of the older stars in the audience clearly were dazzled by her being there!
You're right, just ignorant! I've noted the last generation or so of film people seeming know zilch about their celluloid history. I personally know an actress very busy in films right now. Nice young lady, but did not know who Clark Gable was. Even worse: Blank-eyed when John Wayne's name came up. She thought it was a brand of scotch--I kid you not!
I suspect that because she was in the audience, and they were doing a bit from her seat, that the standing O made no sense. Nobody would be able to see them if they all stood up and clapped.
She was like 90+ years old here...and still looking quite beautiful, as an older lady...Time robs all of us of our best looks, and her looks did change for sure, but not in a bad way!..She was a very intelligent, accomplished playwright, and wrote her autobiography as well...She outlived three husbands!...absulutely one of the all-time great beauties of the screen, and a fine actress, when allowed to be given good parts...so much more than a "scream Queen".
Thanks Billy Crystal, you navigated a live situation wonderfully with respect and grace. Fay Wray literally standing right there is so monumental, her Kong role is ALWAYS iconic. Can you believe she's over 90 on here? Sane and aware as if she were 20
She was very bright, and said in several interviews, that she was attracted to intelligent, gifted men. Her first husband was a good Hollywood script writer, but was a jerk, an alcoholic who cheated on her--and when she took their child and left, he hanged himself!..She was single for awhile, and had an affair with Clifford Odets...then she married a physician, who died from cancer a few years later!...I believe her final husband was also a doctor. I so admire this woman, who worked her tail off during the 1930s, to support herself and her wayward husband. In 1933, she appeared in eight movies! Just a classy woman overall.
Which leads me to suspect Fay was not made aware ahead of time about Crystal saluting here. I've seen and her Fay Ray around that time in interviews, very articulate and very poised, but you can see here that she's a bit overwhelmed, even quietly asking Billy Crystal if there was anything she needed to do. Don't know who to thank for this wonderful moment, but it sure is nice!
Hollywood stars make a lot of money how she got to be 90 very simple have you ever heard of money when you are a big celebrity you get the best treatment possible for healthcare now if you're not a celebrity what can I tell you being famous it's a beautiful thing especially when there's something wrong with your health because the doctors will treat you automatically I know this because when John Lennon got assassinated I was with a doctor that was checking my hearing when he heard that John Lennon was in the hospital he stopped treating me and attempt to John Lennon I hope that gets your idea and meets with your approval
I understand that, almost to the end, at the age of 96 or 97, Ms. Wray, the widow of Oscar-winning cinematographer Russell Harlan, stayed active, drove her own car, and led, in every way, a full, full life.
Towards the end of her life, she became close to a guy named Rick McKay, who endeavored to make a serious documentary about her...they were very close, but McKay unfortunately died before he could put his version of the documentary together. Some scenes from it can be seen on TH-cam.
She was actually married three times. One of whom was Robert riskin. Legendary screenwriter who wrote many of the famous frank Capra movies of thirties including it happened one night, Mr deeds goes to town and many more.
What a sweetie. She did very well for being caught completely off guard. And probably needed glasses to read the teleprompter, which Crystal probably hadn't thought of

Fay actually broke into films in 1924!...She was like 16yo!...In the late 1920s, she starred in one of the very last, big-budget silent films, called "The Wedding March"...She was 19 at the time!...and then, she proceeded to make the often difficult transition into the "talkies"...When you watch King Kong, you can see remnants of her "silent acting methods", over emoting at times...a common thing to witness from those actors who managed to be in the early talking pictures.
I remember seeing this in 1998. I was in college by then, and appreciated Fay Wray like anyone else would. I had seen King Kong as a kid and knew of her as one of the then-oldest stars of Hollywood. A few years later, while transcribing my great-great-great grandfather's autobiography online, I was surprised to learn that he was also her grandfather, making her a first cousin of my own great-grandfather. She passed away about a year after that. Since then, I've had a greater appreciation for her.
In her heyday one of the most beautiful actresses of the 1930s and a legendary screen star of the most iconic motion picture of the 1930s. The academy full of modern day stars themselves like Arnie, Cameron, Caine and Connery should have stood up in her honour. Poor showing for beautiful Fay.
she was supposed to have a role in Peter Jackson's King Kong (2005) but unfortunately she passed away a month before filming, this could have been a beautiful full circle moment!
I played a game of trivial pursuit decades ago and my two cousins answered every question with Fay Wray. It was the funniest thing. 😂 And that memory popped in my head today when I was thinking about what a wonderful hostess my sister was/is hosting all the gatherings. AND YES HOW DID FAY WRAY NOT GET A STANDING OVATION.
