I had a goal around 5 years ago when I was lonely and depressed and fat. I said I need to lose weight, I need to create a family with a wonderful woman, I need a good stable job. I have that now. Thank you.

I had some help along the way but initially I started by just trying to reduce my bad habits, smoking, drinking and eating very unhealthy foods. Now very rarely I still have a cigarette or a drink or maybe a pizza or some fried chicken but it’s not an everyday thing. I started by reducing my cigarettes and alcohol consumption by halving it every 2 months and just started eating a bit better, simply just no fast foods and only original ingredients. When I saw that I was breathing better and was able to be a bit more active I started walking to work which was around 1 hour each way. Around 6 months into it I joined a gym and went from 17 stones to now I’m around 13 stones. In the mean time I was introduced to a girl by a friend who was seing that I was trying a bit and it went quite well I’m married to her now and have a daughter. Around that time I was working in contruction for a few years, I already had a good paying job just didn’t enjoy it and that was bringing me quite a lot of stress, so I started doing other work to see if I like it more. At the end I found that I really enjoy driving, initially started working for a friend as a driver and now I still work as a driver but for myself. I’m not a rich man but I’m happy with where I am in my life and I’m not saying that just to say it, I really am a different person than I was 5 years ago.

I’m one year sober and clean in 4 days. I can’t put into words how much my life has improved in EVERY AREA. Not only this, it has given me the realization that Jordan is talking about, if I set my mind to a specific objetive and organize my life and behavior to achieve it, it may not happen, but I will be waaaay closer to getting it than sitting around wishing to achieve it. Looks simple when you say it, but by god I’ve had to struggle to learn it.

I could just tell you to be a good person, work hard towards your goals, never loose hope etc and it's all obviously true, but that doesn't convince you, does it?
"plans are important" yeah OK, duh?
Explain to me why they are so Important, what it looks like if you ignore it, and how to actually implement them. What even is a plan, like the concept of "having a plan", can you explain that to me? So that it manages to convince to actually make and stick to one?
You see now? It's much more difficult to deconstruct and analyze something deeply. Oversimplifying things, and ignoring significant nuances, that's easy.

Brother George. There is only one truth one true perfect word and that is the word of God. I urge you friend give the new testament a try start at John and when you are finished John pick any chapters you'd like to start. Put the bible on loop every day. It is the living perfect true word of God. Jesus Christ loves you so much. You are so precious to him so much so he got an internet stranger to give you this message. The closeness and edification you will feel is unparelled. Jordan although he never states it follows chrsitian theology and respects it greatly. You know men of God by their heart. Do not let religion trick you. There is no religion in Christ and religion (christianity) has been used as an excuse to do some heinous things. So do not get trapped in religion. Follow the God who made you. JESUS CHRIST. YESHUA HAMASHIACH. He loves you and is calling you home.
Try it friend and if there are some things you don't understand there are biblical interpretations you can look up to help you. The King James version is a great bible to start as it is the most accurate. If reading is not your forte you can type in audio bible KJV onto TH-cam and there is a lot of great audio versions some even sound like movies.
Please George the Loving Lord is calling you back into his arms.
I pray you will find GOD Jesus Christ in his powerful word.

I went from being single and living at my parents house working "temporary" jobs, to being married, becoming a father, owning my own house and rekindling an old passion that I've actually turned into a job. And I did it in 3 years. There were bumps in the road and you will make mistakes. But the one rule I've made for myself is to always focus on the goal and ask yourself regarding anything you do "will this bring me closer to my goal?" The answer to that question should answer all your problems.

@@scholaroftheworldalternatehist In some sense, yes. But I don't think happiness is the goal or purpose of life. First of all it's hard to define and means different things to different people. I think happiness comes with fulfilment through purpose and I definitely have a more purposeful life now. If you're unhappy, it doesn't matter if it's rain or sunshine, it's an internal issue most of the time. I speak from experience when I say, do not expect external things to make you happy, make peace with yourself and God and then you'll be at peace with the world.

There not bumps friend..... They are tests of your resolve!
The only mistakes are the ones you fail to learn a lesson from, some lessons in life can be very expensive and those usually hide the most beneficial lessons if you can see them and take them on board.
My boss as an apprentice taught me this when I messed up a big job (cost my boss $20k). Thought I'd be getting fired straight up over it and went and told him what I'd done.... Instead of yelling, he looked at me, REALLY looked at me and asked "What did you learn?"
I explained what I'd learned and he said "Well, it's an expensive lesson then, not a mistake!"
He then told me if I did the same thing again, it would demonstrate I hadn't learned from the lesson and he would fire me.
That conversation 25yrs ago made a profound impact on me and I've carried it through my life and into owning my own business. Been some expensive lessons over the years, but they have ALL been lessons that have gone on to pay me back in time.

Thank you Greg! I’ve followed you for years~ I came back to the farm after college in 2015 to farm with my dad and grandpa. Sadly neither of them are still here, my dad died in 2021 (57) and my my grandpa died 5 months after him (87). It’s a mixed operation, crops and cattle. I’ve been putting polypipe waterlines in the pastures, and just got my first fiber glass posts to rebuild some fence for high tensile. Im currently switching the crop ground over to certified organic and diversifying the crop rotation quite extensively. Still learning, and supporting my grandma with land rent as she is still here and lives on the farm. Still working to improve my grazing management, but I will say I am feeding less hay than ever before and the cows are only in the dry lot on average for 2 months out of the year. I do have hay ground as part of my crop rotation, but generally end up grazing the what would be third cutting. Ain’t perfect yet, but I’ll tell you those payments aren’t fun. Since my dad and grandpa died I have sold a lot of equipment, but I’ve also purchased equipment. It’s hard for me to know whether it was wise or not, but the tractor I purchased is used on a daily basis from field work, to hay, to moving snow to composting my manure from the dry lot. It’s a smaller tractor with front wheel assist, with a quick attach loader. To get that I sold my dads big international 2+2 that was way too big for the size of our farm, and was only used a handful of times with a disk that was also too big. I will say, but moving to organic my equipment costs are lower because I was able to buy a cultivator for $50. I’ll take that over the horrendous chemical bill I get from the co-op any day. Thank you for the love and insight you send out to us.

He’s right. I tested this theory starting at age 18. I’m 54 now. I had nothing at age 18, but had goals to 1) get a college degree; 2) own my own home; 3) be able to buy new clothes when I needed them; 4) get more physically fit; 5) build my confidence; 6) not be afraid of doing things that were good for me, but not aligned with the culture I was raised in; 7) serve my country and 8) marry a beautiful woman who would make a good mother; and my overall goal is to go to heaven
I’m 54 now. I achieved all of the above, with exception of going to heaven. My wife, and I are still married. We are hanging out for a few days while on vacation at our place in West Texas this week. Our kids are young adults and good people. I don’t have any need for things anymore. I enjoy maintaining what I have. Goals. Set them, stay focused on them and do the hard work to achieve them. Signed, LtCol, USMC (Retired) now just a C-Suite Executive who serves others first

I once believed in this, and worked vehemently to achieve it. Put my body through so much, gave my mind as much punishment as necessary in order to achieve those goals. No sacrifice was too great, no pain too deep, as long as the purpose and intent grew me closer to those goals.
Now almost 4 years later from the start of the journey, I have lost more than I gained, all the things I worked for bore no fruit and all the reasons I had to fight for to achieve those goals have crumbled and faded away. I've lost it all and have nothing to show for the sacrifice except the reality of my loss and the inability to see any more purpose. I'm sorry to drag you down reader, but sometimes life doesn't work out the way we want, don't give up. One story does not equate another, great success to all of you in your journeys

Well, at least you tried. And i imagine how difficult it is to realize that you lost few years on something meanless maybe.
There's only one way out of this, to accept the situation here and now, and decide about the next steps.
Also calms when you accept that whatever the situation is you're not alone, and there are many people going into much harder troubles than we do..
And finally, noone to blame, you just tried to be happy, thats all.

Although your choice of words suggests a lot of suffering is being invited in, I’m sorry what plan you made hasn’t been working. I agree with the at least you tried and have the strength in knowing you tried and can follow a plan. What JP is suggesting is about intention and adaptation. So what about your plan isn’t working? What is it that you lost and how wasn’t that anticipated when you started down this path, whether you can repair it or not repeat it in some future version of yourself how might you do it differently? It’s all about the path and what we encounter along the way, my brother.
