A Whizbang Technique For Shrink-Bagging Poultry Parts

    In this video, Herrick & Marlene Kimball explain a whizbang technique they've developed for shrink-bagging parted chickens for the freezer.
    Using a basic heat gun and an inexpensive impulse sealer they transform standard 10x16 poultry shrink bags -from www.PoultryShrinkBags.com- into smaller, heat-sealed bags and shrink them tight. This technique is easier and faster than using an expensive vacuum sealer machine- and you end up with a consistently better package for the freezer.
    You can purchase 50 @ 10x16 poultry shrink bags from PoultryShrinkBags.com for $25 (postage paid). Each of these bags can be utilized to make two parts bags that are approximately 1 quart in size. So, for $25 you would end up with 100 shrink bags (for 25-cents each).
    Poultry shrink bags are made for poultry but they are food-safe and can be used for other freezer applications. We have used them to freeze other kinds of meats.
    Vegetables and fruits can also be packaged for freezing in shrink bags. However, there is a distinct difference between how vegetables and berries shrink up in a shrink bag, compared to a ziplock bag. For example, blueberries in a ziplock bag can be sealed, patted flat and frozen in a flattened form. But when you put blueberries in a shrink bag and apply heat, the bag will not stay flat. It will shrink into a much more rounded form. The shrinking action does no harm to the berries.
    P.S. "Whizbang" is a dictionary word that means "conspicuous for speed, excellence, or startling effect."

    So glad I found you and just in time!! Going to be butchering 65 CC in 2 weeks. I have used freezer zip loc bags in the past and wanted to try Shrinkwrap. Just purchased from you all!!     We got these bags from them last year and they worked GREAT. ( Cutting that tiny hole before shrink wrapping does not ooze juice if the cut is properly placed, small enough, and the chicken pieces dry enough.) Also canned up some "liquid gold" broth - amazingly golden and indeed rich. Helpful video - thanks! ( I'm back for a bit of a refresher course...)

    This gave me a big idea!!!
    I pulled out my foodsaver machine and used this to bag chicken/ rabbit parts. I cut and sealed the shrink bag, making 2 bags out of one, then used the machine to vacuum seal your bags. works great! this is another use for you to post, and the poultry bags are so much cheaper that the make it yourself vacuum bags sold on line. You really don"t have to cut the u shaped open end off, just fold over and seal it twice, them cut the shrink bag into 2 bags across the middle.!!!

    LOLOLOL Oh how I loved that ending. See, you need to be more like that when you do all your videos! Their great, but you used to be kinda "stiff" THIS is what all my TH-cam friends love, just being natural. Good to see you getting used to making videos. I'm going right now to ebay and getting one of those PFS 300 thingies, and your bags too. I have a Foodsaver but it's way to big compared to this one, and it's so bulky that I seldom use it. I will be getting a lot of chicken soon, and it sure will be nice having something that isn't going to take up space that my Foodsaver does. Oh how I love homemade chicken broth, and I plan on making a lot of that too. Thank you for the tip about the Ball Blue Book recipe! I loved this video, and thank you too Marlene for sharing with us. Actually as far as video quality, yours are much better than most of the ones I watch, and you will find that TH-camrs go for a good time and fun, more than good cameras or perfect videos. I sub to over 140 channels, and watch them all, so I do know what people like. Most of my TH-cam friends are gardeners, canners, raise animals, teach solar, and a ton of skills. I can even dig my own well!! LOL I just know many would love your inventions, and you will indeed get a lot of views when you share what you have and stick with it. It does take time, but it's so worth it. You will meet a lot of great people on TH-cam. Only one really important suggestion. Never let the mean, and nasty bother you.     I just got the equipment to do this but I plan on dipping the bags in bags in hot water. Is the hole still necessary? What’s your process for dunking them in water?

      You will need to provide a hole for the air inside the bag to escape as it shrinks. Otherwise, it will shrink only so far and you'll have something akin to a bubble or balloon around the chicken. If dunking in hot water, I would NOT use the techniques and equipment shown in this video. Instead, you would want to use smaller parts bags. Once the open top is twisted closed, you have a handle of sorts to hold (with gloved hands or a pair of pliers) and dunk into the hot water. Another idea for allowing air to escape the bag when dunking is to use a short length of stiff tubing as explained in "Good Idea #5" at this web page: poultryshrinkbags.blogspot.com/2011/06/about-us.html. Another option for dunking small packages would be to use a basket, as you can see in the latter photos on this web page: poultryshrinkbags.blogspot.com/2011/06/its-downright-easy-to-shrink-bag.html

    Many thanks! This is exactly what I was looking for. We'll be processing bantams and was going to invest in parts bags but this will do just fine. Now all I need to do is purchase a heat gun and PFS300 or 400. I found the 400 for $31.99. Are the bags you're using the plastic bags that shrink with hot water? Thanks for sharing and the ending bloopers were wonderful.

    Is it necessary to put a hole in the the package

      Yes. If you don't have a hole, the bag can only shrink so far. The hole allows more air to escape and more shrinking to take place. The amount of trapped air in the package is more evident on some packages than on others. It needn't be a large hole for the air to get out. The hole in this tutorial was bigger than necessary.     Does dipping the bags in hot water not shrink them ? This is the first time I have seen a heat gun used.

      Yes, dipping in hot water shrinks the bags. That is the typical way of shrinking them. But for smaller packages we like the heat gun. It's just another option. It's easier to plug the heat gun in and use when needed than it is to maintain a pot of hot water. The finished package is not as smooth as water shrunk but it's good enough for our personal use.

    Um , I need a bigger bag, the last time I weighed my turkey she weighed 35lbs so I'm gonna need one for a 40 lb. Er . Do you sell one of those or know where i could get one

      Our 18 x 32 bags will handle a turkey up to 38.5 pounds. That's what we've been told by a customer who managed tyo just fit a bird that big into that size. We don't have anything bigger. There are other bag sellers, but I don't know offhand how big their bags are. 40 pounds is a very big bird. Congratulations on growing biguns like that!

      The chickens are dry when packaged. Then frozen. There is no leakage. We’ve done this for a lot of years with very satisfactory results.
