@@krakenatemyboss If you like dungeon crawling, the game hold up very well and has some really cool dungeon design. Another one that does into a similar vein is Anvil of Dawn from 1995 (which so far wasn't in any video)
Played half of thoses, what a legend and memory. Hours on Carmagedon, lots of fun ! Even the rare and forgotten "The Incredible Machine" was very good and satifying. Lots of legendary games here who have print a mark in our memory.
I'm really struck by the variety and the stark contrast in quality. It looks like DOS games were a wild wild west instead of the clearly defined gaming genres we have now.
There was also several huge advancements in technology between 1990 and 1995. People talked about Moore's Law a lot more back then with how fast your PC would become obsolete. You went from needing kilobytes of RAM in 1990 to several megabytes in the mid 90s to hundreds of megabytes in the early 2000s, to as many gigabytes as you can afford today. You're also correct that, even within the same era, some games just looked and played better because they were made by coding geniuses who knew how to get the most out of their hardware. Most PC games back then were also made in like 12-18 months, even for the top studios.
My PC came with a disc when we bought it that had strike commander/syndicate/wing commander and Ultima 8 on it. Talk about getting off to a flying start
Awwww, man! Now I need to play a lot of old games! But Im obsessed with finding the name of this game a played the demo, on which you are like a pterodactyl picking up parts that you assemble as tanks, that fight with other tanks. I really wanted to try that game for longer than what the demo would allow me!
I am surprised to not see games like STUNTS, Ski Or Die or Myst. I looked up Street Rod, Castle of Winds and Harley-Davidson: The Road to Sturgies, but those games came out in '89. Many great games of the 90's that have gotten entirely forgotten.
It's really amazing that even in an era where the PS1 already existed, there where still games developed for DOS. And some like Tomb Raider or City of Lost Children even started on the PS1 / the Sega Saturn and where later ported to DOS.
Very hit-or-miss list -- either I was going "how wasn't this on the first 2 lists?" or "whoa, wth is *this*?" I can still think of enough games to fill another video. Biggest snub I've noticed is Myst. I can think of plenty more, though, ranging from Stunts to Quest For Glory to Faces to all the old shareware games I spent my allowance on.
Ultima Pagan was amazing. Basically a Ultima Online but single player. You could sometimes climb Buildings from outside (Windows or balkony) if the door was locked. You could take any Object you see. Even the stuff on Tables etc
Hey Guys I am looking for old Viking style game. Cant seem to remember the title. There was a map menu with big tree in it. The look was isometric with beautiful music. First level went like that: In village overrun by some monsters you find some guy hiding in wardrobe. He send you on a quest to find his daughter. After going to some stone temple behind weird lighting doors (depending on the colour they could electrocute you) find her bound to some altar being electrocuted. Then there was some battlefield but don't remember much more.
i was in love with hocus pocus, tyrian (a game i forgot the name of), Lemmings and that 'The Games: winter challenge' game was ridiculously fun. Thanks for the instant nostalgia
Gah, just went through all 3 of these videos. Great nostalgia! We had a game in this timeframe that I could never find. All I have is a bad description of what I can remember. I believe it was isometric overhead, you were in a jungle? Amazon? And you were doing some sort of exploring. I'm pretty sure I remember getting poisoned by some strong spiders/enemies. I remember leaving the little village or whatever, and just everything outside of that was too difficult. Gah, it's right on the tip of my mind, but I can't really remember more than that.
I guess few are missed from this list, Resident Evil, Twisted Metal & I don't remember which part of Final Fantasy were playable on DOS, but at least one was.
