How OG Fortnite Proved Epic Games Wrong

  • Fortnite OG was probably one of the most anticipated battle royale updates of all time. And now we know it wasn't just nostalgia. This season was straight-up PEAK. In this video, I throw all sorts of conclusions around about this event and it's developers. I may speak like this is well-researched, but don't be fooled, video is 99% biased opinion. Zoo wee mama. Was he spitting? or was he just a yapper. YOU DECIDE.

I belive that if fortnite stayed on the chapter 1 map for all it's lifetime, it would've been dead like 2 or 3 years ago, these updates is what kept fortnite alive. The OG update brought so many players back but it also brought the new players.

    • @RatSkull
      @RatSkull 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +411

Yea, and i like how a lot of people just don't want to understand that. If Fortnite stayed on the og map with no changes and no new gameplay it would have stagnated and died really fast. The new seasons and changes made it to always stay fresh and make you keep on coming back, to discover the new map and learn something new. And the best decision and biggest peak Fortnite has done was integrate the no build game mode into the game, making maps tailored to it. You can really see it in the old map with the zero build mechanics, it just dose not work that good.

Yeah maybe og fortnite was a little bit more fun, and I've been having a great time this season, if they kept the game in the og state forever it would get really boing eventually. The thing I dislike (not really dislike, but am more slightly annoyed by) is how superficial the OG season feels. None of the weapons, gameplay mechanics, and even visuals are the same as they were in 2018, they are balanced versions from later in the game’s life, and I doubt this season would be gathering as much praise if it was as unpolished as older seasons in Fortnite were. It’s like manually triggering nostalgia for how you remember it being, not how they actually was.

Hit the nail in the head with this video, keeping the game recognisable is essential for a playerbase. Look at minecraft, they only update it once every year or so, and even then it is already alienating some of the playerbase. IMO, Seasons 2 to 4 had the best content stream of all. The game always felt fresh, yet recognisable. I remember I couldn't sleep the night before the season 4 launch, which was at 8am, so I decided to just stay awake the whole night hyping myself up. Hope both EPIC and Kevin Feige and Disney learn that you need to keep your identity recognisable for success, as both Fortnite before OG, and the current MCU are kinda unrecognisable to a lifelong fan like myself

    • @captainswagger2838

The problem with Minecraft isn’t that the updates are stepping outside of what Fans want it’s because the updates now compared to the older days are seen as so lackluster. Not because of the kind of content but because of the amount.
It’d be like if Fortnite did nothing for a year then added in one small location one weapon and one vehicle and called it a day.

I will always think Fortnite went downhill due to an increase in vertical mobility. It used to be very boots on the ground with the occasional vertical movement through launchpads, bounces pad, or quad crasher.
The increase of vertical movement options through stuff like mantling, quad balls, Spider-Man gloves etc caused the game to become less challenging.

That’s what I liked about the old seasons. They had a much slower pace (which I preferred). you had to actually strategically find high ground and
actually build a fort in FORTnite. You’d shoot and snipe other players across forts and when you’d get a knock, you and your whole team would jump pad into their fort for some close range fighting, which was a harder item to find back then and one of the only quick mobility items in the game. It made third partying much harder, No vehicles, no crazy movement mechanics, no rifts, spider man grapples or any other ridiculous movement items.

I’m gonna have to disagree with this video. It’s under the main fact that Fortnite never died. It may have lost popularity in the mainstream, but Fortnite was actually getting more players than back in 2018 even before the OG season. The new generation of Fortnite players are very different than the OG players.
2:09 For it to have the biggest impact it could possibly have. The longer they waited the bigger the impact would be. This also pushes eyes onto the huge updates that will come in chapter 5
4:57 see, Fortnite only started to pump out these bigger updates when it was slowly leaving the mainstream. Fortnite was at its biggest in the mainstream though seasons 3-5(and a bit of 6), and guess when they started to pump out more drastic updates??? Season 7. There was no “riding out the wave” because the wave was already getting smaller, and if they didn’t do something they would’ve been dead, and left in the dust. Although their new strategy didn’t put them back in the mainstream it set them up well for the generation of players coming to Fortnite. Gen alpha.
5:10 google trends isn’t the best way to gauge something’s popularity, especially if you look at small time frames.
5:45 yes, and this is perfect for gen alpha, as they are now getting old enough to play Fortnite. These new kids have attention spans that are at an all time low. Fortnite saw that, and started updating the game much more frequently, and having much more spectacle to satiate them.
6:21 This would not have been a good time, as gen alpha was just starting to dip their toes into the game; If they got put into this slower Fortnite they have no nostalgia over then they would drop the game. OG Fortnite was only about a year and a half old at that point, so the impact wouldn’t have been as big. If they had went back and kept to their roots Fortnite wouldn’t have been as popular with the new generation.
7:28 This is actually when the new generation of Fortnite truly started. After chapter 2 they put this new strategy of theirs into overdrive. If they just put a slower version with less overall content into the game, then that would mess up the momentum they were accruing.
7:48 exactly! They have a totally different fan base playing the game now that wants different things than what the OGs want.
8:00 it isn’t an average season’s length for 2 reasons. 1. They didn’t want to risk the new generation getting bored of the slower paced and “less exciting” version of Fortnite OG Fortnite was; so they made it 1 month long to let them know what OG Fortnite felt like, while not losing their attention. 2. Since it’s 1 month long people are going to play Fortnite way more, as they want to maximize the amount of fun they can have in the little time period.
    8:21 yep, that’s 100% true.
8:35 quite the opposite in fact, Fortnite believes in OG Fortnite so much that they put it randomly out of nowhere before some of their biggest updates to have the largest amount of eyes on the game as possible. Think about it, if they didn’t believe in it, And thought it would do bad they would just go into the new chapter with the huge new content.
8:40 it doesn’t. The only reason why they’re hitting peak player counts is because the new players are mixing with the old players. If Fortnite keeps the game closer to how it is in the OG season the new players would get bored and slowly leave.
8:50 I personally don’t think so for the reasons I stated above. Fortnite also had save the world that they could’ve kept updating if they needed things to do, as save the world never got its story mode finished before they stopped updating it.
9:54 those are the little things that make this game more interactive, and make it more attractive to the new Fortnite audience.
Extra things: If Fortnite kept to how it was they would not be able to implement the insane amount of crossovers they have in the game without it being off. ( crossovers are big cash cows for Fortnite, and rhey also bring players from the franchise they cross over with) I’m not a hater or anything, I love your content. I’m just sharing what I think about the topic.

Even in Zero Build, Fortnite still feels like Fortnite, not in the same way of course, but the identity it built really differentiates it from the rest of the competition.
Another reason why I strongly prefer Zero Build over the default BR, is that your average player got exponentially sweatier than your average sweat in the OG seasons.
Nowadays you shot once to a guy, and he either builds the entire Taj Mahal, or he hard camps in a cube, which can be problematic depending on the loot pool, if only the Stinking Gas (that was brought back in OG Royale) was present, I wouldn't be complaining about that one, but oh well.

To be fair, some changes they made were actually nice. Swimming was cool and fishing was also funny. Cars were also nice. The best thing they could have done is just use multiple maps instead of forcing a new map each time. I think OG Fortnite kind of has an oppertunity for that idea since the whole time travelling story line is apparently changing the past fortnite events. So maybe Epic can create something like a multiverse where there are multiple parallel timelines, all with their own version of the Fortnite Island (including the OG one).

No old house noises. No wind. No radios. Just.. silence... It was eerie and gave a sense of mystery without being annoying. It set the tone and let the players focus on each other. Something I think that Epic NEEDS to do with this newest chapter and this use of time travel usage is to make the next chapter something lengthy, simple, and less of a sort of grand spectacle. While I do love the lore and story they’re trying to show the world, the fact is that the act of running a game to be simple and fun, whilst also having it be rich with a story for many to be pulled into is a balancing act. While it may be hard to determine what moves will pitter the next chapter to be more fun or more complex, it’s something that they gotta figure out. Soon.

  • @thebroschannel

I think they should keep it simple. You don't need the OG map, you just need the classic aesthetics, the simple gameplay and a good story. If Chapter 5 opens with a new map that's based on the Chapter 1 aesthetic, instead of them using new maps to showcase their new tech like they did with Chapter 4, and they manage to keep it simple until the Chapter ends, thats a guaranteed home run. But they're never going to do that.

Having NPCs, heists, half a dozen different vehicles, guaranteed orange weapons (with orange not even being the best), and the godforsaken augments all at once turns the focus away from the beuatiful core of the game, which I see as equal parts scavenging and skill-based gun pvp. if they didn't believe in it they wouldn't use it to boost their players before their "biggest event" and "biggest update yet" they know it'll be successful, they aren't idiots. they're using it to boost their players and whilst everyone is here, promote their upcoming new chapter, new skin releases, new lego mode, new racing mode, new guitar hero mode, new event, new guns, new first person mode. they know what they're doing, if they released this next chapter like usual the playerbase will continue to spiral downwards. they're good at promo, hence why I think they waited so long on purpose. if GTA 6 was released in 2015 it wouldn't have had anywhere near as much hype as it does right now, Jake Vs Ksi has been building for years and that has a ton of hype. if you make consumers wait for an already hype product in the right way, it can snowball. leaving epic games with 40+ million players in a day to advertise to. they didn't think this would flop at all.

    • @John6-40
      @John6-40 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      1. They can know that Ch1 will bring attention for 1 month while also not believing in it's long term viability.
      2. I agree things need to stew, but not for 5 years. GTA 6 didn't need to stew for over 10 years.
I'm 42 and remember how much hype there was around Vice City and San Andreas, and those games released only 2 years apart.
GTA 6 took 10 years because GTA online was an unexpected smashing success, and Rockstar milked it for all it was worth.
With Fortnite OG, there would've been massive hype for this 3 years ago. People were calling for the Ch1 map the minute we moved to Ch2.
With Epic, I just think they feared stagnation. They probably feel the game always has to be doing something entirely different or people will leave.
I think they're right to an extent.
That said, I see no good reason to not have Fortnite OG as a mode, aside from maybe Epic worrying that no one will play Ch5 or their precious Creative if Fortnite OG is taking so many players.
Fortnite OG is obviously quite popular.

Fortnite has brought the OG chapter back so that everyone’s eyes are on chapter 5 because something big is happening which just happens to be the Lego collab, the Rocket League racing mode, and the music rhythm game. Fortnite has been working on the Lego collab since 2021 so I can only assume they planned for season OG or something like it since 2021 because they knew it would bring the most people back to see the new things Fortnite has to offer in chapter 5. EVERYTHING was most like meticulously planned down to the very minute detail so that chapter 5 will succeed.

Fortnite lost me when they started focusing more heavily on outside tie-ins for their skins and their “story”. I thought it was much better when it was mostly original content because it felt like its own thing. Now most of their seasons are rolled out with some celebrity skin, half of the emotes are just boring TikTok dances with random rap songs playing over them, and overall those collectables don’t seem nearly as cool or valuable as they did back in the day. The game feels like it’s gotten too complex with almost too much content coming at us way too fast.

Loads of people here saying that the game needed drastic changes every year or so to keep popularity i think miss the point a little. Fortnite in its first 4 seasons was at its peak because it had a completely unique mechanic like building, it was simple, the guns were balanced well enough and the game had a steady flow of content updates which kept it fresh. As soon as Epic started to really ramp up updates and to try make some retrospective storyline for the map the game started to die, which would be around seasons 5-7. Its telling that even at that stage people were already asking for the game to revert back to the original versions. The magic of fortnite was its simplicity and also its complexity in the building mechanics. As the inital seasons progressed so did the players and their abilities with the building. What really started the drop off was adding creative, that then made the skill balance of the game completely different and if you didn't spend hours in creative practicing you basically got slaughtered every game you played. So to say that the OG fortnite players are blinded by nostalgia i think is wrong, we just liked the simplicity and balance the game used to have. Its similar to GTA Online in that way i guess, once the weird additions like doomsday and oppressors were added the game started to drop off. People like simplicity with updates that feel natural and arent too radical

The whole point is to make those successful. They do it a month long for FOMO, throw an event/concert on the last day to catch even more attention and all the new stuff releases around Christmas time, you have a perfect formula for money making here.

Very well done man! You'll definitely see more subs in the coming months!
While I agree with you about the game being in the best state in Chapter 1, I am a pretty big fan of variety and new stuff. Mainly because I'm a CoD TH-camr, and trust me, having a franchise that just recycles everything over and over again for nostalgia's sake can just get pretty insufferable. That being said though, I think them adding a TON of weapons, new maps, and new gameplay mechanics and expanding what the game and engine is capable of doing isn't hurting the game as much as it's helping it. I think the real problem lies in the skill ceiling. It's just so ridiculously high. Casuals basically can't compete. Even if there's ONE guy in a lobby that is super sweaty and good at building and editing, 99 more casual players don't stand a chance unless somehow RNG gets the better of this good player. And take that from me--cause I'm a pretty fast and sweaty Fortnite player as well (been playing since Season 0 with a break in Chapters 3 and 4), but it's not hard to see that the skill ceiling and daunting grind to get better is really what's scaring a lot of people away from the game (hence Zero Builds) and ZB in combination with OG Fortnite definitely was the best way to bring everyone back. Zero Builds had like a million players when the OG map came back, which is what I guess can explain my point the most. So basically, it's a combo of your point (new content can blemish a perfect work of art) and mine (the skill ceiling is way too high to support basic casual play).

i remember back in chapter 4 there was cars and giant hammers and really robust battle passes with tons of skins, but i really struggle to remember anything about it. hell, i joined the game the tail end of chapter 3 and i cant remember anything. jump to right now, season og is legit the most fun ive had with the game ever, and probably the best time ive had in months. even with all this, i really dont want the og map to stay. the best idea would probably be to take the design philosophies from the first chapter. make small but impactful changes to the game, keep interior areas small (the oathbound castle from ch4 that i cant even remember has such a large interior.) i dont even know if its possible for that to happen, but im retaining some small hope.

Fortnite OG brought me back after 3+ years of not playing this game (and even towards the end of that period I didn't like it that much anymore, so more like 5+ years ago for when I actually played it religiously), and it was so much fun. I started playing with one of my old friends again. They gave us magic, but it only lasted for a month, it passed like the blink of an eye. I know it's just a game, but I am actually kind of in despair that it was snatched away from us so quickly. Hopefully when it returns in 2024, it returns as a *permanent* mode!

As much as I love OG fortnite, I do admit some new things were cool. That whole alien season, brought some nice weapons, a UFO, and you would get abducted for some reason. I liked the idea of being able to ride boars and wolves in chapter 2 season 6, and swinging around the daily bugle was awesome. Plus, you couldn't really go wrong with those sharks and npcs. Also that whole roller coaster with the ballers was awesome and so were the marvel mythics. And that indiana jones temple was pretty cool too. (I remember attempting to destroy it with goku's mythic with my friends in battle lab) Basically, what I'm trying to say is that not everything about the newer seasons are horrible. (except chapter 4 that just simply sucks. (besides season 4 chapter 4, of course))

I actually think that Epic was still doing good when they dropped Chapter 2. The end of the original Fortnite felt chaotic, so many weapons and vehicles and all that stuff was added to the game by then, people wanted a return to something simple. I feel like Chapter 2 Season 1 really delivered that. It was like a calm, a break in the storm, while offering an incredible new map to explore with neat new features. The skins were simple, the weapon pool was simple, it was just so fun. I will say though that I stopped playing after Season 2, and I think Chapters 3 and 4 were really bad. I just will always respect Chapter 2 Season 1 as an incredible season.

As someone who only played Fortnite BR on release and only just started playing again for OG month, it really has been the over-complexity that has always kept me away. I stopped playing originally because there wasn't a no-build mode and being moderately good at building eventually became a requirement to ever win lobbies, after that even after they added no build I was put off by how much was just in the game and how complex it looked watching other people play it where nothing is as intuitive as it's original concepts.

By the time “The End” happened we knew we weren’t coming back, as the season was a celebration of the past. As an OG who quit the game in chapter 2 because of the drastic, unnecessarily complex additions: I love OG Fortnite. It's not nostalgia. I played throughout the entire month and liked it the more I played. The OG game was better in so many ways. Better loot, more balanced loot, the pacing was good, no vehicles, no NPCs, no attachments, no bloat.
Then Chapter -5 dropped. I hated it. Fast-paced, no time to think, just loot, run, and shoot. Bullet speed and drop is slower than Chris Christie on a good day. Weapon balance is completely ruined by attachments. NPCs everywhere. Cars everywhere. Just bloat everywhere.
Chapter (negative) 5 is a different game entirely. It doesn't come close to OG.

Man, I loved your video, really, but I'm "new" to fortnite (I started playing late 2021) so when the OG season came out, I kinda hated it. Almost no vehicles, an ugly map, a full heal item that takes 15 SECONDS to use... I wasn't having it. I just farmed the whole battle pass, bc Lil' Split and Renegade Lynx are gorgeous skins, and then left it. I'm glad that a new chapter is out, with tons of new content, more lore, more movement items and vehicles, and finally crossovers with other games coming up. I see your point: OG season brought back all the nostalgic players back, including YOU (probably), and the old map and loot made you remember the good old days with the boys and all, but it was just that, nostalgia and an effort to bring back the lost high dopamine days. Now, I won't say that filling the game with so much content that no one can keep up is the way to go, but I think that all games should keep going forward, adding new stuff and SOMETIMES bringing back the old stuff to make you go "wow, I remember THAT!". There needs to be a balance between new content/gameplay changes and revival of old content.
