A great camera and one that people overlooked too. The Canon New F-1 is a tank and built to last. It was Canon's first inclusion of weather-proofing in a SLR. The internal circuit board was epoxy coated to repeal water and there are rubber gaskets in some of the body seams. Special lubricants the same used for NASA was used to lubricate the internal parts to handle hot deserts or cold mountains conditions. The backup mechanical speeds are only available if you completely remove the battery. In the battery compartment, one of the terminal post acts as a plunger and as soon as the battery was removed it would extend the post. A clever camera and perhaps one of Canon's best SLR ever made.

when i went in the Air Force in 1985 and got to my first duty assignment and went into the photo lab, i was assigned an F3 nikon and a series of primes. i politely slid the bag back across the counter to the NCOIC and said, "you support the camera with the tech, and ill use my own gear, thank you very much" AE-1, F-1New, and half dozen primes. the ONLY think the F3 had over the Canon was the extended eye-relief on the viewfinder. the Canon required the 'speed finder' that was a bit unwieldy.
the different viewfinders did NOT give you shutter speed priority. they give you aperture priority by rotating the SS dial so the pin engages the switch in the small wing that extends from the side of the pentaprism. adding a speed winder or motor drive gave you shutter speed priority

It is certainly the Canon's best SLR ever made! Very robust, reliable. I bought it in 1983, took it every where in the world, took thousands and thousands pictures whit it and it is always pecfectly fonctional. My best expérience ever with a camera!

If you purchase the motor drive you get shutter priority. Something the Nikon F3 didn’t have. Found this out in 1986 when I upgraded from a AE1 Program to the F1New. You do get aperture priority with the FN finder but you don’t get the reading in the finder.

I did not have a good experience with a second hand Canon but I would be tempted to get this one, look like a very good camera. Since it was most likely a pro camera, with all its features and options, I am not surprised to see that it is still very reliable and accurate today
This is the best SLR from Canon ever made and the reason for that I think is because it was actually Canon’s last ever flagship mechanical camera. This is where Canon’s long succession of making mechanical cameras sadly ends, so it’s almost like they wanted to make the greatest mechanical SLR they could. They really over engineered this camera. It’s the best of all the years of experience Canon had making these cameras. Sadly things had to move on after this and it was all plastic and electronics from the mid 80s. They were still producing this camera tho up to the early 90s. I was lucky enough to find a later model made in 1989.

I used to have the F1New + the motordrive back in the 80s... and I LOOOOOOOOOOVED it !!!!
BTW I noticed you also have the small leather flaps protecting the body, same as me... had the same flaps in leather.
It was running like clockwork regardless of weather and environment, even though I abused it seriously.
It was so solid that it just felt like a lump of solid metal, and all was super quality, from start to finish... I wish I still had it, even if it would just sit on the bookshelf as decoration (because like everyone, I only shoot digital today) 😁
I got my F-1n about a year back. I do love it. Still have my lighter and full auto A-1 for when I want. But I love the beast F-1.
I loved this review! One of my favorite to date! Your genuine enthusiasm comes through. Honestly this is giving me a major case of GAS lol. I also enjoyed the sample photos you showed at the end.
One question I had, though: you mentioned the Vivitar lenses. I’ve seen them on eBay before and always wondered what their quality was like. What has been your experience with them?
Thank you! The vivitar lenses are an affordable brand so the quality isn’t going to be great but that being said, the zoom lenses I have I’ve found to be good as well as the soligor.

Excellent review! I've had the chance to work with both the F-1 and New F-1 and if I had gone Canon with my manual focus kit, a New F-1 is certainly one that I would invest in!

The F-1N was a mix of the old F-1 reputation and durability with the much better automation suite of the A-1 and also a far better and more sensitive light meter system.

Yes the F1 New is very solid
Canon made sure it improved this aspect over the original F1 and F1n which were made of very soft brass- finding a well used one without dents is often difficult

Hello Aly, It looks like you have a beautiful and happy family :) You will be amazed at how quickly the little one will grow.... too fast !!!!!
As for the camera, I started my photographic journey late in life, I'm 71 and about 10 years ago I started with a Fuji XT-1. I now have a few more Fuji's (XE2, XE3, and XT3). I started shooting film three years ago and my stable of film cameras has also blossomed, but, the F1 is the one I reach for every time.
I'm 6'3", with big hands and the F1 new just feels good in the hands. I don't know what it is about using film. The whole process takes longer ( I develope my own film) and is not as easy as using the Fuji's and let us not forget it's expensive!!! In reality,, it's a pain in the butt. But, I really enjoy it and I love the slower pace and the results.
That's it for now, I see that there is some great morning sun here and I'm going to take advantage of it with some t-max 100 in the F1.

There were some fantastic cameras built back then! Everything wasn't just injection molded plastic! And the employees of all the large Japanese companies were treated very well, loved their jobs! And took personal PRIDE in the products they made! It's no wonder cameras made 40, 50, even 60 years ago are still working! Doing the job they were designed to do! While my $4,000. electronic "Wonder" gave up the ghost after just over 2 years!!!!

Congratulations on the new baby! I liked my Canon New F1 but sold it. It was just too heavy for me, especially with the chrome nose concave 35mm lens. Interestingly, though, I still have a Canon EF, which is just like the F1 but with a fixed prism and shutter priority only. It doesn't seem as heavy to me. And I love my Nikon F2AS, which is no lightweight. You should try the Minolta XD-11 if you get a chance. Beautiful and capable camera (same body as the Leica R5), compact, and fabulous lenses. Just got one, and it may be my favorite.

It is pretty heavy. Especially for an SLR. That’s interesting about the canon EF. I didn’t know that. I was gifted the Minolta XE-7 recently. My first Minolta ever. I really like it so far.

The canon F1n is all METAL cast body and it works with out a Battery and is a well made camera from 1980s the TOP shutter speed for flash photography is ONLY 90sec

I've been eyeing this camera ever since I found out it's the one Peter Parker uses in the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, but I'm all set with my Olympus OM-2n. Looks like a great camera, though, and your pictures came out great!

The matte black will eventually wear down to the brass that the camera is made of. This will start to show as a yellow tint usually in areas of heavy use like the grip areas.

795g (from Wikipedia), that's heavy! I'm looking for something lighter than my Nikon F2. This isn't it then. Although it looks great for what it is.
Oh yea this one is pretty hefty. Depending on what features you need, you can look into the FE or the Nikkormat line. I’ve never had any of those personally but i know some of them are lighter.

I’m not selling mine but it looks like they’re running around $200-300 on eBay right now. Just make sure you ask a lot of questions like does the shutter work at all speeds etc. if you could use my link that would help the channel. Either way Good luck.

I have heard these puppers can be pretty janky.
That’s weird. I’ve only ever heard the opposite of that. But I can say in my experience at least it’s a great reliable camera.
I bought one years ago for £100. Now they go stupid prices. I used mine alot and exposures were spot on. Then the exposure needle started sticking and my exposures were way off so I stopped using it. It's a very complicated camera to repair and I have alot of experience with many other cameras that I've stripped down but this one I'm not touching. I bought the first version last year and love it.
