    You're going to fall in love with the GQ. Don't believe the kettle rubbish. The NA will NOT overheat as long as the standard cooling system is in good working order. They only overheat after being turbo'd & cowboy tuned by muppets chasing stupid numbers out of an engine that was never designed for big power. By all means throw a turbo on it but keep it under 18psi & put a quality front mount on it.
    Beware the first time you crack the thermostat housing bolts. The long one is notorious for snapping.
    When you do the chop, sort the gutters so that you don't drip water on the window switches every time you stop with the window down in the rain.
    Upgrade the front brakes to ones from an efi model GQ. Be sure to get the efi caliper bolts to. You're gunna need those. The twin piston efi calipers make a big difference when you need need to stop.
    The glovebox lid makes a great table.
    EDIT: If you are parking it on the street, sort your security NOW as it won't last long otherwise. You can fit a hidden switch to the fuel isolator circuit for under $20 in less than an hour. Won't stop the prepared but it will stop most of the opportunistic.

      Well said, hard not to love the gq td42. I have had td42 patrols for just over 20 years now and still love that sweet td42 engine sound. I have a gq and gu both td42's. My gq has 600000km and runs like new. These engines are dead simple to maintain and repair.

    • @brucebaxter6923
      @brucebaxter6923 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They all kettle when the origional front skirt is removed to fit a bar and it’s lifted 2”.
      The air flows under the radiator, hits the front diff and builds up a higher pressure behind the radiator that reduces airflow considerably.
      Then the fitment of a winch and lights finishes any airflow that remained.

    • @gasnxt6805
      @gasnxt6805 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@brucebaxter6923 i ran my first na td42 gq for 5 years with 6"lift and 35's. Done several high country trips, heaps of mud bogging, crossed the simpsom dessert flat out in one drive and many more adventures flat out without overheating issues. I think many people have no overheating when na as long as the radiator, fan clutch, radiator cap, overflow bottle and shroud are in good condition. My current na gq td42 patrol 2" lift, bar and 33's never gets hot even on long hills in the heat. Its got 600000km on the original engine. Never been apart so i'd say its never been hot before i got it. My gu td42t gets hot tho but its running a bit more fuel pressure and makes good power.

    • @gqwarrior6694
      @gqwarrior6694 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@brucebaxter6923Sorry but that just isn't true. I have all those things, never had skirts, never get hot. Got 4 mates with same rigs bit various tyre/lifts & not an issue to be found with none of us running no skirts. Invariably when skirts are what makes the difference, the real issue is deeper in the cooling system or a tuner that is trying to tune to the motor/pump/turbos capabilities instead of the capability of the weakest point in the whole shebang.

    I had a TB42 GQ before my GU I own now. It was unstoppable. It walked everywhere I pointed it. The patrol was ahead of it’s time before it hit the road. As far as overheating, just keep the engine mods mild man. Don’t bolt big shitty turbos on it and wind the boost & fuel up to buggery. It will serve you well.
    I would love to see it stay mildly modified with maybe just a 2” lift and some 33’s, if that and seeing it hum along the tracks as it would back in the day before the industry pushed everyone to over do their vehicle.
    Alas, good shit man.

    Do not change to a cheap Chinese aluminium radiator, keep the original copper/brass, add some oil to the viscous hub, cut the neck off the fill point for the radiator and install an expansion tank from a TK Barina. The expansion tank will keep the coolant within the cooling system and not fill up the old style overflow bottle.

    Cooling system.
    Derk water pump
    Genuine 82 degree thermo
    Alloy plastic adard
    The fan you have
    And fully seal radiator around and keep factory gaurd under radiator and you shouldn't have issues. That's how ufi does there cooling and they've had these things for a long time. Works well.
    This motor is a na black top which doesn't really like big power and hot egts because of the lighter pistons but good news is it's easier to build to turbo spec later.

    If you're in no rush to modify it or build it, any chance you could do a trip or 2 with it stock (maybe a set of MT's) everyone just goes nuts then trips them, a bit refreshing really but otherwise looks like a good buy especially for 9k

    My 1993 80 Series has just clocked 750,000km, but I am planning on rebuilding the 1HD-T. Just rebuilt the Gearbox & transfer case as well as changing it to part-time 4WD.
    Hmmmm.... rust in the roof gutter channels, huh? Hassan CHOP!!!
    NA stands for Naturally Aspirated, as opposed to Forced Induction ie Turbo or Supercharged
    Rev thing is a Tachometer (Tack-omita)
    Great editing Tyler! Made Demi look like a natural! Just kudding Demi!!!

    Tyler, option 2: Lose the Hyundai & keep the GQ as a family wagon given your extended family. Just do a basic suspension upgrade (2"), 33" Tyres AND THEN instead of spending $1000's on chopping/other off road mods, replace the maunual box with an auto & maybe even bolt on a turbo to make it a daily driver. You've already got the Nav' & GU, why have another capable 4wd... unless you're gonna retire the Nav.

    Hi Tyler, I fixed my taco on my gq, it had the same problem as yours, you need to remove it from the dash, replace the 5 electrolytic caps and resolder the circuit board. Check for dry joints on the board of the taco. The whole job takes about 2 hours once you have the replacement caps. Cheers

    I often wish I’d had kept my GQ 4.2 Diesel wagon. It was a very capable and an economical vehicle to run and service. I especially loved the two air filters, which guaranteed that dust could never get into the engine. Mine had a factory diff lock, which was rare for a 1990s vehicle. Gearing was lower in first and second gears compared to my GU TD42, so it was impossible to stall in low range. You’ve got a great vehicle to start a new build. Have fun with it. I know I would.

      Might be cheaper to do chrome molybdenum running gear than GU diffs nowadays as GU stuff is kinda expensive n getting hard to get.

    If you want to keep that TeeDee42 cool you will need to get your radiator record to larger tubes. I had this problem for years had this done and she’s as cool as a cucumber

    There is nothing wrong with the cooling system with GQ or GU 4.2 diesels, its when you start wanting more horse power out of them the kettle will boil if not done right. I have a GU 4.2TDi with an after market intercooler and have had no cooling issues with. I had AE CO do a Dyno and just do a safe tune on it and it does me. It pulls my 2ton boat anywhere I want it to go.

    Do a xtra cab chop with a rear seat. If you get front seats from shorty GQ, or other forward tilting seats you can still have your 5 seats but 2 doors and a longer tray. It's the one option you didn't consider that is different :)

    This week on 4wd24/7 we boug... oh whoops, wrong channel 😂 Always been a fan of the GQ. Simple 4wd to mod and travel with. Went down the IFS route though. If I had the cash to build another 4wd I'd get either a GU or Q for sure. She's a quick learner I'll give her that. The last women I tried teaching to drive a manual didn't go so good 😂
