Imagine getting hurt, with no-one around to help. And if they did come, it’d take hours for them to reach you, and hours for them to get you to a hospital. I’m kind of introverted too, but I also am really afraid of being trapped somewhere where I could die and there’s nothing that can be done.

I purchased my house dirt cheap, banks wouldn’t finance it because very little had ever been updated in it (built in 1881). Because of that, the owners had no choice but to sell it very cheap. Yes, it needed a lot of work, but paying full cash and still being able to live in it (though not always comfortably) as the work was slowly done, has rewarded me with a house I own. No mortgage is awesome!
I don't have that kind of patience. The houses in which I have lived through their partial remodeling and renovation, oh How I wished I had rented a hotel for a week. That would have been far easier on my nerves.

That is why he hasn't sold it. It's not because no one wants it, he just won't sell it to anyone that will be the caretaker and not the owner. If you were legally allowed to remodel and decorate he would have a bid frenzy but you can't and that's the way it should be.
History behind Granot Loma...it was constructed and owned by one of the world's wealthiest bankers, Kaufman, and the first place the blueprints for the empire state building were viewed by a public figure was at Granot Loma on the main dining room table. His name is on the gold emblem in the entrance of the empire state building as a key investor.

I bought a 700 sq ft home built 1897 near downtown Salt Lake City in 2011 for $90k on a decent sized lot for the area. We lived in it for about 7-8 years and then dumped $70k into gutting it and renovating it with maple cabinets, stone countertops, modern electrical, alder barn doors and mosaic tile work. Sold it summer 2021 for $350k.
Many told me it wasn’t worth renovating but after all of my expenses etc. I made 150k on the sale. It was worth it to me.
Imagine how many families homeless Americans you could house in a 52 room mansion yet it just sits there unused. It's a disgrace
yeah, but it's still $2 million dollars. Then there's property tax, cost to maintenance and heat and cool. Taxpayers already absorb the cost of the homeless as well as give dollars and change to daily. Then you have the homeless family looking for the 53rd room. Not to mention the concerns of safety. You never hear about the violence, abuse and rape that occurs in the homeless community. Fantasy worlds always neglect reality.

@@gabrielledavis1827 60s, 70,s and early 80s for me. Working most of the time. I grew up in Warren. We visited relatives who lived on Linden near Henry Ford hospital nearly every weekend. I was blown away at what it looked like during a visit back in 2010.
So many burned-out houses on every street. Too many good people trapped in those neighborhoods.
The airport driver assured me he carried as he drove me to the hospital :-)

No it can’t. I live near there. It’s in a residential neighborhood up on a hill that has a view of Hartford. Zoning won’t allow it, neighbors don’t want that and quite frankly would loose money. Not going to happen and shouldn’t

@@LesbianMuses I thought the same thing about that house in remote Wisconsin, 50 cents house and the Neverland Ranch. Seems their would be upscale interest in all of those homes. The Idea of being 200 miles away from a major city on a Great Lake should appeal to a lot of people.
Two problems. Property taxes & maintenance costs. The electric bill alone could be $10,000/month. Homeowners insurance would be another bill. Usually people earning a million a month perfer to get an architect and build there own dreams.

For example, I worked at the Mayo Clinic and it is this huge center in the middle of nowhere plus it gets really cold but rich people from all over the world come to for care year round. Its been the top hospital in the whole country for years. These mansions could be turned into high end rehab/hospital or something similar with all those rooms and the isolation.
@@doctorfritznoel Maybe but renovation/repurposing a building is 50% or more expensive than building new. The Mayo Clinic was built for the Mayo family by a religious organization, not a business group, called "The Sisters of St Francis" in 1899. Although they built a highly successful practice, their current size occurred over a period of a century. The remoteness of many of these properties is also a problem because hospitals require places for staff to live, shop and send their kids to school. They are also dependent on major population centers as a source of customers.
These giant homes should be renovated for apartments. Practically designed as such already.
Good idea but the problem likely falls in deed restrictions that prevent multifamily units in a wealthy subdivision.
Granot Loma is a historic site and cannot be altered.
Some areas would probably have to be re zoned to allow apartments which are considered a business. That might be a fight if you have neighbors.
The cost would be way too high and a lot of these places are considered historical and can't be changed that much, also the red tape you'd have to go through is ridiculous
Neverland would definitely be the one and it DOES IN FACT have a whole lot to do with the amazing legacy of Michael but also the fact that I would change the way foster care operates. If I had neverland I’d love nothing more than to give orphans a beautiful life until their 18 and even then I’d like to continue working to prepare them for independence by getting them through college.

That’s actually a great idea but rich people would rather have no one live in them forever then allow poor people to enjoy what they don’t want. They forget that they were either born with a silver spoon in there mouth or where they came from. In the end they’ll regret it because first will be last and the last will be first
Maintenance would be so expensive that nonprofits would find it impossible to raise enough $$ to operate. If you have $100 to donate to a homeless shelter, would you give it to an organization that serves 200 homeless people housed in an uber mansion that costs millions a month to operate or to one that serves 50 homeless people but costs $10,000 a month to operate? Which gives you more bang for your buck? Even if you run a government agency - which option would be more acceptable to taxpayers?
Also, because housing for homeless or battered individuals should be just as adequate as housing for the rest of us, the cost of bringing these properties up to acceptable standards would also be a tough sell to nonprofits if there are alternatives that wouldn’t require such outlays of capital. Most of us would rather see our donations going directly to those who need help than to a bunch of contractors doing rehab on dilapidated houses. That’s why donors should always pay attention to a nonprofit’s operating and capital expenditures.

One thing you also forgot to mention with the houses in Detroit and I'm assuming many other places, the land tax goes by the home's appraisal value. And also the taxes still owed. Just because you pay $1 or even $5,000, if the home was last appraised for $50,000, that's what the taxes are. Even the empty lots aren't listed as a bare lot. So taxes are for the house that was on the lot before it burnt down or was demolished. This may only be about back taxes and maybe you can get things re-appraised and changed for a bare lot, that' I'm not sure of. But it's why I couldn't go downstate and buy one in the suburbs for say $3,500 like I was looking at. Also the past owner may not be happy with the new one, never know what can happen...

Being from Vermont I have learned to heat only the areas of my home that have water pipes that can burst and cause severe property damage, and those areas that are kept at a lower temp are easily heated when they are ready for use or to be lived in.

The photos shown of it in this video are of when NeverLand was up & running & in great shape. Unfortunately- since the place has been pretty much abandoned for past 10 years, everything there is dead & rotting away. Like that huge clock…. All dead. The ponds… green slimy water…. The grass & trees… dried out & dead.

@@ACE-jp7uh it depends on if it has a smart heating/cooling system where each room can have the temperature set. if thats the case then you could just cool/heat a few of the rooms. that would be sub-optimal though obviously. there is also the option of installing solar and wind power though, but it would take alot and probably would cost a million dollars to install

You're going to need at LEAST the following: one cook (and by that, I mean the person does nothing but cook, not even pick up the mail outside), a butler, at least two maids (that's a looooot of rooms to clean) plus one has to live on site several days out of the week and probably someone to do everything logistics related: pick up groceries, buy window cleaner, buy paper towels, soap, toilet paper, etc. And last but not least, since you're adopting a lot of kids, you would need a babysitter or two. All that would cost a fortune in itself. A youtuber who is the captain of a privately owned yacht mentioned this is one reason why yachts costing over $25 million are sometimes sold dirt cheap: the staffing/maintenance was just too much...

I live like 2-3 hours away from the first one, to get to it I'd have to drive an hour up north, and take a boat (I'm assuming it's on a island) and I'd love to live there.

I’m originally from Michigan, and another reason that most people don’t want to buy homes in the actual city of Detroit and not the suburbs, are the taxes. Part of the city’s financial plan (at least I’ve heard) since they’ve lost so many residents, is to have higher property taxes to help pay for things in the city. That on top of the cost of fixing up some of the old homes, and the fact that living there it could take a very long time for your neighborhood to be in a better state, and it’s been seriously hard to bring residents in. However, some large businesses have moved in, because the city gives them financial tax BREAKS and incentives to move in. So it’s a mess. Detroit has a lot of potential geographically and otherwise, but it could seriously take 100 years for the entire actual city of Detroit to be beautiful again. Downtown is looking better and better, and I really admire people’s efforts there. But wow would I not have the patience to move there myself.

Infrastructure and interest - why would anyone stay there? What's to do/see around? How would people come/go (guests, sure, but also staff)? How to get services supplied constantly?
Hotels are very frail and demanding investments, so not desirable.

There was a registered historical house around where I live. It was located where the new County Jail now stands. They sold it for just 1¢, but whoever bought it had to pay nearly $1M to move it. And it was much larger than most land plots anywhere near the area. 🤦♀️ I have no idea where it went to, but the other restriction was that it stay somewhere in the same County. 🤔

Jackson’s family is messed up, out of all these homes it should be turned into a tourist place to see. It’s amazing, parsley park is a place people go in Mn to see Prince house and it just like Elvis home in Graceland gives tourists something to visit and makes a ton of money to pay for the bills. It’s insane to me someone’s beautiful home and a legacy gets left. Unbelievable, wish I could see his home and had the money to open it up to everyone to see a lifestyle he lived.

I love videos like this and I am so thankful that people like you post them. One thing I find annoying and confusing is the quickly flashing pictures of different houses while talking about one specific house. It would be okay to leave up pictures of the house that you are talking about even if you only have one picture. I have forgotten what the house looks like that you are talking about because photos of many other houses flash by.

The houses in Sardinia look tempting. I could see buying one, spending some cash fixing it up a bit, living in it and then buying adjacent houses, doing the same and then sell them as air B & B's. Living in the Mediterranean wouldn't be a bad thing at all. Possibly a nice retirement plan.

One of the things not mentioned here are the property taxes on these big houses. Sure, the houses may sell for less than market value but then the property taxes would be astronomical. Property taxes are calculated by determining the true market value (as determined by your local government)
In many of these cases the property taxes would cost more than the house.
Property taxes? In the UK that big house would cost you NO MORE than $3000 a year. If you lived in it on your own you'd get 25% off. That $3000 is the highest Council tax charge in England and would apply even if you bought Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. We don't have an annual property tax based on value as such, it's just an assessed charge worked out on value (or estimated value if built later) in 1992? (May be a year or two out).

Prop taxes are the most evil scam in centuries. They started growing like deadly mildew many decades ago and now have a stranglehold on America's economy. Even if someone gives you a home, it'll still be worthless after a few years of prop tax punishment. Making "owning" a home not even worth your bother. They need to ban all property taxes, period. Either you totally own something, or you don't.

Some of the houses wouldn't be too bad a deal, as long as you can do the renovations yourself before calling in an inspector to certify the work. I'm not sure how it works in other states or countries. Honestly, there's a lot of opportunity for entrepreneurs out there.
