I love fancy goldfish because of how derpy they are. They're surprisingly active. Constantly hungry for attention, and just loving.

When my nieces were little, I had a pair of stacked tanks, one mixed tropical and the other goldfish. The girls loved to watch the tanks, but I noticed that they were hanging onto the stand to watch the goldies in the top tank, pretty much ignoring the tropicals below. I finally realized the golds being bigger, were easier to see, and ended up swapping the tanks around. From then on, calm time and nap time was easy: throw some pillows and blankets on the floor and set the girls down to watch the goldies.

An ethical and responsible business... such a rarity these days. I completely agree with you on the "the store sells it, the store takes it back" rule. Stores would make the wise decision (as you have) to not carry larger fish. If a customer really wants a P. managuensis, you can always special order it... and you could then make the decision on whether the customer is capable of keeping it. Never saw the guy before - no. It's Dean - how many do you want? The guy shows you a photo of his 600 gallon Central American mixed community - it'll be here in two days.
Nice to meet Goldfish passionist! New friend here, subbed and hit the bell. I resonant with you on lots of points. To me, 2 big reasons are Culture and Breeding. Goldfish is a simple culture element, think about Butterflies from China, Bristols from UK, Ranchus from Japan, Veiltails from Philadelphia. All different kinds represent the appreciation of beauty from different cultures. When you can breed your own goldfish, you will understand the fun that I am talking about Breeding
I recently managed to get a calico pearlscale and I swear down they are my pride and joy, watching their colour come out brighter and the pearl like scales becoming more prominent honestly is so satisfying.
Also if anyone else has had a pearlscale say hello, I have never seen anyone say anything about them!
As an adult I look back on my childhood “goldfish” bowl and the bad husbandry that’s was practiced pre-Internet! One of my memories though was a goldfish that was sick in its bowl and dad put it into the koi pond to sink or swim… well it became a MONSTER and I fell in love with it! Another wonderful video of yours!
what an absolutely abysmal take on OFR. Yes there are 100% people who take advantage of the word rescue who are genuinely just looking for handouts. Fish constantly move through OFR, and OFR consistently go out of their way to cut ties with anyone guilty of this false rescue behavior. Educate yourself even momentarily before having that awful of a take. Perhaps join the group and see how constantly they give fish and equipment away. Speaking from experience rehomed monster fish so to speak have their new homes thoroughly vetted before they are moved on from so its actually going to a good new home. Until then it remains at OFRs facility regardless of your completely arbitrary timeline on rehoming lol

You were so right on the nurse it back to health comment. I bought a feeder goldfish to keep my bacteria going in a 55 that I was going to make a North American tank. The darn thing got ick. I had to go learn all about goldfish and nursed it back to health.. It's name is Mikan, it lives with a bluegill and two shiners and is spoiled rotten.
I love Goldfish, always have. I think they are so full of personality. One of my favorites, is actually the plain 'ol comet and/or the commons. I feel so sorry for the feeder goldfish in stores. I feel like they should give them the same respect and care as the other fish. I recently brought home 2 baby comets, (1.5 inch -2 inches) put them in a 20L and treated them with the triple meds. They are thriving!!! When they become too big for the tank, I hope to rehome them to some one with an outdoor pond.

Shubunkins got me into the hobby. Pretty much bullet proof fish I am lucky to have probably the best natural fresh water quality in the UK. I got them when I was 17 I am now in my 30's and those fish are still going. out grew the tank, out grew my pond now they are swimming round in a local garden centers ponds beautiful fish and their colours were popping. One had an amazing tail was easily the size of your hand. Loved em very sociable fish.
You described so well the powerful, often misunderstood bond that forms with a fish. This is the unspoken reason I am so happy I started following your advice to quarantine. Of course keeping disease out of the display tank is important, but I have my QT set up in my bedroom. This means I start and end every day with an eye on how my newest buddies are doing. This makes me so much more emotionally invested and happy when they do well.
Be nice if you inserted some clips of the gold fish you stock so we can see the quality
100% true that most goldfish get sold when the breeder’s experience says growing them up won’t yield more profit for the extra investment. I’ve talked to a number of fellow breeders and farms that operate this way. It’s why statistically smaller fish at stores will be poorer examples of their breeds when grown out (exceptions always being possible).
That said, like you said, the HEALTH of the fish is directly related to care more than genetics.

We agree on " the rescue" of fish. Because I live so close to Ft Bragg there are always families getting orders to go overseas or moving cross country and you can pick up some great deals on tanks. A lot of times the family or guy/gal would only sell the tank if you took the fish also. Ok, I only keep nano fish. Guppies are as big as I go, but here's a 75 g tank for 50 bucks but I've got to take these cichlids or this young flowerhorn or these giant swordtails.
My solution...take the tank and fish, keep them for 30 days, make sure they're healthyy and eating well, and as I was actively selling my own home bred fish on AquaBid, to put up...rescue fish need permanent home auctions.
I did not care if the last bid was 25 bucks or 10 bucks. As long as I know, hey you're a cichlid guy, and you're going to take these and keep them healthy and happy along with your own cichlids, cool beans.
Or you've got an empty 75 or 100 g because your oscar died of old age so you are willing to take this flowerhorn and you already know how big it is going to get and you know it's aggression level as it grows and you know what it's diet needs to be. 10 bucks and you pay shipping, great.
People sent pics of the fish in their new peermanent tanks. I got to know some awesome cichlid people, and some awesome betta people.
But yep, that was my rule, 30 days to make sure everything is healthy, happy, doesn't have ich or any other obvious signs of diseases and then up for auction you go.
Doing this, I also learned about velvet and internal parasites and how to treat them.
It was a great learning experience, I got the tanks and stands I wanted and the fish got forever homes.
Would I do it again...nope. I'm not actively selling on AB anymore and I still only keep nano fish.
I don't like big aggressive fish and these good deals on tanks and stands always seem to come with big aggressive fish, or baby fish that are going to soon be big aggressive fish.
So, pass on the great deal, and I've seriously downsized on my own tanks, so, yes it is a great deal, but nope, not for me at this time.
I have 2. One is a black Ryukin but has now turned completely white. The other is an orange Oranda. They both have beautiful fan tails. Just love them. A Gold dojo loach lives with them too in a 60 gallon tank. Goldfish have always been my favorite fish to keep. God bless!

Hi Cory love your videos. you and Joel and Joey have got to be the best TH-camrs I’m in the uk so I watch all your videos the morning after you do them so never really make the live show as it’s 1am when your on and I have 2 kids so need my sleep lol but I love Thursday morning then I can just chill out and watch you for two hours on the tv. keep up all the good work hopefully you will come to the uk some time and I can meet you in person I have 3 tanks now and I want more I have an addictive personality so fish keep my busy hope you have a nice day
This is my favorite show on the home shopping network...I'm also super bummed that my family thought it was a joke when i asked for sham wows for christmas and then failed to actually get me sham wows...please do a video why sham wows are a must buy for the aquarium enthusiast in your life. Any time I am browsing the local box store fish tanks, I find I tend to go looking at the derpy looking Black Moors.
I have a big goldfish that came from the fair and two comets that are smaller but i love them and yes they are named hahaha. Their tank is blacked out with some Malaysian driftwood and a bunch of anubias. They really pop with that bright green and bright orange in the black tank. Great video corey thanks!!!!!
I used to get "feeder" goldfish for my classroom. In the Spring, I transferred them to my friend's pond. One of them turned out to have the big fat body and googly eyes. I would you visit him in my friend's pond as he grew fairly large. Loved that guy, he was so personable and goofy.
I have 170 fish and all of my established ones have names. I have 70 guppies and I have named every single one. Guppies are pets to me, they are all individuals. I have all their names written in my notebook and their identifying features, if one dies I cross it off the list, maybe I personified them, maybe it was an easier way to keep track, but I rescued most of these fish and I got to know them very well. the only ones that don't have names are the 69 fry they just had because they are 2 weeks old and probably gonna be sold.
My goldfish is a beautiful little shubukin. His name is Frank and is about four inches long and his tank is right by my door and he is always excited to see me walk in! He is so personable and has been awesome ever since I got him a year ago. So sad that people just plop Em into a cup or vase with some horrid colorful substrate and purple plastic plants or something. Glad you made this video.
I'm trying to figure out the best setup for my common pleco. Right now he is in an 80 gallon tank and he's a foot or so long. He has mini tank mates and I'm pondering whether or not he should be in a tank by himself? What do you suggest?
ive a six inch comet goldfish i do everything im supposed to water changes ect ,but he has popeye and i just cant get rid of it , its just the one eye and now ive noticed a few lumps on his side ,(we got him from a travelling fairground hes 4 years old now ). cant think of anything else to do with him dont know whats caused it .

I am new to fancy goldfish care. Confused about filtration. I keep reading where it is recommended that one filter 10 times the volume of the tank. I have a 50 gallon tank and 500 gph strikes me as a bit too much for fish that are 3" long or a little shorter. In addition, what do you suggest for substrate. My local aquarium store recommends sand versus gravel. Thank you
OFR is an actual rescue though... Fish move through their facility often, they ensure that they're healthy, and the people receiving the fish are checked out to ensure that they have the correct housing for the size of the fish. They also work with aquariums and have supplied several public aquariums with fish for their exhibits. They are very open that they are hobbyists and that some of the fish end up being permanent fixtures. They also provide temporary housing for animals whose exhibits are moving states. They are a high quality organization created by hobbyists specifically for monster fish, though they do take any fish as well as turtles. I recommend you take a better look at their organization.
I have a 12” Sarasa Comet that I free/rescued off Craigslist. Its given name is Pineapple, and if cams from a family that got too busy I guess. It was in a 20 gallon when so I found a really neat Thai bamboo tank on Craigslist that had new sealant, and it looks great, very retro.
Pineapple has an albino Bristlenosed Pleco for a buddy, and is happy and healthy.

I have bought a goldfish used him for testing if things were toxic or not he got the nickname chester the tester and is the original purpose was I bought him to eat the duckweed and then I had this large kitty pool and I put some native aquatic plants in there and I put him in there and he survived the entire summer in there I made sure if it got too low that I would fill up some buckets put a little bit of prim in the bucket in the pool he has thrived I moved him in for the winter because the pond freezes solid. But I’ve grown really attached to him

I love getting goldfish that have some sort of 'deformity' that disqualifies them from shows, or that others would consider uglier than usual. xD I've bonded with my water piggies so much that I took anchor worms out of them with my bare hands. (Mostly because I didn't have any tweezers...)
My sister had 4 common goldfish and a 10 gallon A finally got hurt upgrade her system they look a lot happy but one of her gold fishes is like a long fin comet idk never heard of one

I've got a foot long goldfish that was supposed to be oscar food when it was still small. Also have another 2 goldfish in a tiny tank while the other is in a 160g makes me feel a little bad for them but the oscar would mess the other 2 goldfish up easy if I put them in the larger tank.

How many times is recommended to turn the water around for a common goldfish? I hear minimum 4.5 times per hour and 10 times a hour? Currently my tank cycles it 6.6 with 2 internal filter in a 240litre tank. They seem healthy and happy enough. Just curious with the flow rate. Thanks for any advice off anybody.
Turnover isn't that important, it's more about capacity of filtration.

In my case, my godfather used to breed and show them when I was a kid. Probably angletails. When I started to consider fish months ago, I was taken aback by the size tank I would need. so I started to pacify myself with smaller ones but at sixty i am not getting any younger so got some small ones for my ten gallon and since they are only like three inches now, can look for a bigger tank over the next year. Got a nice gold and white and a calico.
I notice you kept saying it’s how you treat them when you first get them, could you post a video specifically for what you do when you get a new goldfish. I got 4 shubunkins two days ago and they just sit in the corner of my tank I don’t know if it’s me or if they are sick lol

The only thing I envy about many goldfish keepers is that they seem to have larger tanks than what I’ll be able to get in a long time. :) But then if I had a tank of that size I’d be putting Tangs and large angels in it instead. :)

I have a male and female 3 spot gurami but the female has yet to have eggs and the male has never made a bubble nest they live in a comminity tank with mollies and a catfish how do I get them to breed? I have had them for over a year and they are both around 4-5 inches. Male long pointy dorsal fin female short round one that's how I know it's one of each gender.

I agree with the rescue point. There is a difference between a hospital, rehab center, and orphanage. I'd think a lot of 'rescue centers' end up being an orphanage. Being clear with your business intent is how to gain customers, as you know. ;)

This is an old video, but I think the reason folks are upset about the rescue section is because it was very focused on the problems with rescues, when the root of the problem is the folks that irresponsibly sell/breed fish in the first place. As an ethical store owner, I can see why he would have some implicit bias toward stores being ethical. I think trying to fix rescues would address a symptom, but the problem of too many animals and too few homes would still persist. Personally, I think it would be more efficient to focus efforts on the selling/breeding side than further down the supply chain.
To be fair, I absolutely have experience with shady rescues. However, most of the people I know that work in that space are also aware of all of these problems and are trying to help the best way they can within the existing (and deeply flawed) system.
35 gallon aquarium or 10 gallon aquarium?? I dont know what to buy can someone tell me whats safe to do?
Don't waste money on the 10, get the 35 instead. A lot of people start with a 10 but then upgrade because they realize how small a 10 is and how limited you are with it. If you can only afford one tank get a big one. That's my opinion.

Great video as ever but I disagree with one statement which was comparing the bond and love for a child was like that of a pet. I would give my life for my son but I couldn't say the same for a dog, cat or fish.
Well, it's a case by case. If you never have a kid, never plan to, or physically incapable of having one, chances are, your pet (particularly a long lived and personable one) will fill that niche just as well, or at least the brain will be tricked into registering as such. Some medical expert might classify that as some kind of mental disorder, but nonetheless, there's plenty of people who view their pets, much more than just a pet; a deep bond between human and goldfish might be a stretch though, but I could be completely wrong about that.
I wouldn’t give up my own life for my own child that I don’t have or a Pet. That being said just about anything else I’ll do for true pets. I think you’ll see that in an upcoming video on Jimmys channel.

There were so many great points made on this video but I have to pause and comment on the one I’ve agreed with the most so far, I don’t believe genetically you can pick a “perfect” goldfish. Maybe there’s better odds, sure. However I truly think it’s the particular owners care they end up in. My first black moor was from a poorly kept Wal-Mart tank, (not a great idea I know but I felt so bad for the little guy) he was the smallest there, incredibly lethargic and like $3. Fast forward 2 years later and now he’s way larger and more lively than the calico telescope I spent $20 something on at a local family owned aquarium shop. Crazy thing is when I got my calico those 2 years ago he was specifically picked to be the same size as my black moor and was perfectly healthy. Anyway, I just have to commend you for your love of such a mistreated and underestimated fish, they’re truly amazing and genuine pets. Its refreshing to see someone with so much fish keeping experience still enjoy these lovely guys.
My local fish store is more than happy to sell me any fish (of course, suitable for my tank) and take it back once it’s grown larger in exchange for a juvenile.

Biggest issue with the Goldfish hobby is that there are alot of myths and misunderstandings that people believe and continue to spread.

Are they different than lemon goldfish? I have never heard of canary yellow comets. Just Lemon comets. We carry them from time to time.

I own 6 tanks all planted. The only tank the only fish anyone talks to me about is my gold fish. I only own one. I have anything from elephant fish, dragon gobys, puffers, bards, plecos, shrimp, snails.
Simply put goldfish are neat. They are smart and pretty to look at.
Fancy goldfish, however. They just dont look right most of them. Admittedly they are an acquired tasted and it's cool that ppl can get so invested in fish.

I have fallen love with this one gold fish. There is a 75 gallon tank at her respite house. They have one sliver fancy gold fish, a common gold fish, that really actually looks more like a koi. Then they have 2 loon heads I believe. One has a yellow head and yellow wen, with a white body and black on it's fins. The other is the popular Orange and white

I always assumed there was no such thing as a rescue. It's just a way to get nonprofit status to write off expenses for fish keeping. Almost every rescue I've seen on TH-cam has talked about buying their own fish that they wanted off the market, which is obviously incompatible with being a rescue carefully guarding your resources and space to provide for fish that actually need help.
When my last goldfish died, I wished I could have traded my dogs and cats lives instead. My Goldfish was my favorite pet! And I hate that people always say its just a fish! Those people must have never really taken care of any small animal Properly and just think that they die
There is something wrong with me🙈 I hate (don't like) goldfish, but I also don't like man-made fish like the flowerhorn. But I loooov gubbies😂 maybe it is because, of my rule, that the fish has to luck small'ish in a fish tank. Biggest tank are I own is approximately 50 gallons or 180 litres🤘

My balcony pond was full of duckweed but just one fancy tail fish ate it all in two days.. I was feeding him flakes too. So for now, I can't out how to grow duckweed.

I love my outdoor goldfish pond - started it many years ago, bought some feeders at 5 for $1. Now I get babies every Spring. Never know what genetics are going show up: long fins, black spots, white. Occasionally I get water birds or bullfrogs or turtles that predate, but it's all nature doing her thing, keeping stock levels relatively stable. I did get a Water Moccasin- that was NOT fun, but it was cool 😎

Goldfish interact with people and will come to you when they see you.
They have been domesticated for 1,000 years so they like people.
They are like dogs in water. They will eat from your hand.
Goldfish are social creatures that thrive with companions of their own kind.
They are cheap fish, 25 cents each for one common feeder goldfish.
I prefer the cheap common feeder goldfish, they very active and hardy.
Goldfish are not picky eater, they are pigs in water, they will eat anything, algae, pellets, worms, insects
veggies, and fruits. They don't have a true stomach so they act like they are starving all the time.
They are coldwater fish they like tempertures 60 to 72 degrees so you can save money on heaters.
I keep my goldfish at 72 degrees. They are the most active, healthiest, show the best colors at 72 degrees.
In summary common goldfish are cheap, long lived, hardy, friendly, easy to feed, no heater is needed, nice looking, interactive that is why they are the most popular pet fish in the world.
