Cory: "goldfish are the best cleaner fish for an aquarium!"
      Cory's goldfish: 11:12
In all seriousness, goldfish are very useful when it comes to ridding a tank/pond of algae and other unwanted plant matter, although I'm not entirely sold on the idea of "the best cleaner fish". When used right, they are definitely beneficial, but that tagline might give some people the idea that getting a goldfish is always a good idea, Though I have now reconsidered getting some panda orandas thanks to this video. keep up the good work you guys, and thanks as always for the super insightful and educational content.

@Aquarium Co-Op I had been taught not to have goldfish in homes with small children, due to zoonotic issues... so in over 4 decades of fish keeping I have *never* had goldfish.
I am reconsidering that decision, now. If I can ever get duckweed to reproduce faster than the turtle eats it, I will probably be getting a goldfish, next.
My spouse made me promise not to get any with the bubble eyes or heads. Apparently there is a history there that I am unaware of, lol.

I too accidentally realised that keeping goldfishes helps keeps algae and duckweeds at bay. And they do agitate the substrate enough for the sponge filters to get to those tiny debris that settles on top of it.

Good video! I like to keep 2 fancy goldfish in each of my Discus tanks. Discus are very messy fish and the goldfish take care of that. As I understand it, when a Discus poops it is 45% protean remaining. The goldfish eat that and their poop is %5 protean remaining. Tanks stay very clean since I added the goldfish a year ago. Plus the discus just like the calm, silly attitudes of the fancy goldfish.

I would appreciate some input. I live in the tropics, but at my specific location it is a cool climate. I put in a 28,000 gallon lagoon hoping to have tropicals, but it's too cold, and I can't heat that much water. So I "settled" on goldfish. The lagoon has a swimming pool skimmer and I've set up a under rock tube with holes so I can pump scum from the bottom out. The skimmer water goes to a bio filter that is about 1/3rd the size of the lagoon. Over the time it has taken to get the biofilter in full growth mode, the lagoon has developed an algae that's an evergreen color and is powdery. I've put in 15 goldfish. They seem to be happy eating the green powder algae. I live beside a lake and can catch several types of Central American cichlids and a small type olive green pleco. I want the lagoon to be as maintenance free as possible. Fresh water is pumped in from the lake directly to the bio filter. I can collect floating plants and water lilies. I'm debating whether to put down a substrate or not. The concrete has developed a blotchy copperish color that I like. I'd like to get a wild snail population going and wild shrimps. Just wondering if anyone has any words of advice. Devices easily obtainable in the US are not available here. Can't find any underwater plants.

Yeah, I was told (as a teen who just got hired at a LFS) never have goldfish with young children in the home. That the water goldfish live in is an issue.
Now I am researching that, because Cory just challenged everything I had ever been taught about goldfish. Zoonotic diseases in the aquarium trade are not discussed nearly enough.... and we need to teach how to be responsible, respectful and ethical, instead of wielding fear of diseases as a weapon.

    Pondkeeper trivia...
Have tanks with lids or ponds with good overhang edges as during seasonal breeding the males can accidentally push the females out of the pond.
Over the years I've found a few outside my pond and rescued them buy holding them in the waterfall stream until they come back to life. Sometimes it works but sometimes they were out of water too long.
    Tough fish though.

I keep duckweed on most of my tanks. About once a month I harvest it and toss it in my son’s carnival game prize a.k.a. Feeder goldfish tank. He won that thing 3 years ago and it lives like a king 🤴. I love that set up since this is the only fish not in my fish room I never remember to feed it but I don’t have to when it has a fridge full of duckweed. I’ve managed to turn most pests in my fish room to food. Once a month I also harvest the 100’s of snails that have accumulated and feed them to my Razorback musk turtles and clown loaches.

  • @MacHamish
    @MacHamish 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yup no stone unturned with them. 😁👍
You forgot to mention that Comets/feeder goldfish can get REALLY BIG fast.
In the pond I had they were a foot long and one koi hybrid I had was easily twice that size. 75 gal minimum and 200 +gal min if in a school of half a dozen.
Ones bio load will also be insane with them, so more water and more filtration the better.
So I personally consider them pond fish only. Also they like colder water (50F to 75F) and hot tropical fish water is bad for their nervous systems and probably dies not have enough oxygen for them.
It's a shame they don't stay small as I prefer them over the fancy types as they are really cool fish and even trainable.

Have been doing something similar with gold fish in the big stock watering tub for the horses and cows they do a great job on mosquito larvae and larger bugs . Could you do a video on rainbow snakeheads if you have had experience with them? Or maybe Dean trying to spawn them?

When my tanks become over done with duck weed, I feed them to my comets.

Cory, side note since I saw these in your tanks...Can you make your rock plant holder in black? 😃 I bought one and really love it but another tank I have has black rock and would like to match!

Thanks for changing my perspective on the goldfish. I definitely believed they're dirty.

I take all of the dirty water that I siphoned out of my aquariums and use it to water all of my houseplants.

Iv'e always known goldfish eat plants that's common information, I actually always wanted to do a gold fish tank, but i'm not sure if it will get along with my other predator fish.

Eventually my red ears got any fish that went to "live" with them. I found water temperature to be the trickiest part of using gold fish with other fish as the gold fish really preferred colder water than what the rest were happy with. . .
