    Cool vid. Quality of life in Japan looks very high. Very clean and well ordered city.

      @@davidcoleman2463 Nope, they only hate those of us who are loud, obnoxious, clueless, and rude. Granted that’s a LOT of us.
      I travel to Japan from Hawaii almost weekly for work. Also been married to a Japanese girl for 25 years.
      Japanese people will generally treat you the same way you treat them. Kinda been my experience in every country I’ve ever travelled to, no?

    Hey Austin,
    Great video I enjoyed seeing Japan looks like a really interesting place. I think you should have dropped by the Rolex service centre, sat down browsed through the magazines and asked the staff for some tea, biscuits and made yourself at home.

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ...and made light conversation for hours until closing time, ask the staff to accompany me for coffee, and when rejected follow them out the door to their cars pestering them. :)
      Oh well, there's always next time!

    It's cool that you got to film in so many places! I liked seeing some of the places that we went to when I was there. And good ol' Quark! My Sub came from that Quark in Fukuoka, acutally.
    Yeah man, the prices are getting pretty crazy. Even my ceramic Sub has gone up. Can't really find them used for much less than 800,000 yen now. It makes me sort of happy that I got in when I did, and in a way, satisfied to just own one Rolex. I like them a lot, but going forward with my collection, I think a lot of them would push me too far out of my financial comfort zone. I've also noticed that the ADs in Osaka don't usually have steel sports models either.

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I knew you'd recognize a few places there! :)
      You want to see a lack of steel pieces - drop by an AD! I was wondering what I'd do if I ever dropped by an AD and they had a Batman. I'd feel a panic to jump on it, because they are so hard to get...Rolex's little trick of dribbling out the pieces would very likely work on me! Let's hope I'm never faced with that choice!

    This is probably the most entertaining video Ive watched from you. I definitely enjoyed seeing all those pre owned Rolexes from different stores. Japan has an insane market of pre owned watches, much more so than the US. It seems like there are so many stores carrying them. Compared to the US, I barely see any pre owned shops. Unless you go to New York City, LA, or Miami, cities where the watch market is very strong. My personal city only has 2 pre owned shops, compared to the 6 or so shops you visited all just in Fukuoka. I hope you could do a watch shopping video Tokyo edition someday. That would be fun and interesting to watch. There might be so many shops that you would have to make multiple videos.

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yes, I will do Tokyo in the future...not sure how much footage I can get inside the stores though, as the last time I was there I remember seeing "no photography" signs. I'll give it a shot though.

    • @oaktree1628
      @oaktree1628 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      David Coleman - Tudor watches are ok, but they are universally known as the second tier watch for Rolex, so I wouldn’t say they command respect. If anything it signals that you are a watch guy who is looking to upgrade someday.

    Hi Austin , I'm a great fan and love your videos and your channel. I have 4 watches right now in my collection, Rolex sub 116710, Rolex milgaus gv, breitling transocean unitime and iwc le petite prince. I'm thinking to pull the trigger on a Tudor gmt. Do you think tudor gmt will retain its value? I had a tudor advisor great looking watch however I did not like it because it was very light, so I sold it. Again what do you think about tudor gmt and will it retain its value. Please let me know????

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment. I don't think it will hold it's value, especially if a slimmer version comes along...and a slimmer version should come along. Right now, it's the unavailability that is driving the high price.

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      ...though a new one released, might drive the price of the current one up. Anyway, if you are looking for investment pieces, look no further than pre-ceramic steel professional Rolex watches. The Tudors are great, but I don't think any of the current ones will go up significantly.

    Recently purchased the 2018 Rolex GMT Master ll Root-Beer for retail as my engagement watch and I agree the GMTs and especially the Root-Beer GMTs are getting harder to get and the grey market values keep going up. With GMTs and Subs, the tritium changed to the Swiss Made Luminova dial, before the holes cases changed to no-holes cases. I just don't know much about the original Explorer.

    Btw Austin I'm going to buy a subscription box, just 1 month order first... Try one out. I cant decide between TokyoTreat and Fallout Crate! lmao! The tokyotreat comes from Japan dude and it has japper snacks!!! Nippon! Japanese snacks and one drink. And its not even that expensive, cheaper than the fallout crate. Of course its food, not items that can last longer (fallout crate). Cool stuff :). The packaging alone on the Japanese snacks would be SO COOL! SO KEWL! Asia, Japan... Oriental asia idk it just seems so foreign and weird and different, and unique :). Seems far far away and different. So that tokyotreat crate would help with that, familiarize me a bit.

    Hi Austin love your vids, I also like the way you show day to day life in Japan, really cool.! I'm from the UK but reside in Yokohama. In 2016 at 66yrs old I decided to treat myself to a Rolex, so I bought a classic 36mm tt Datejust, I feel at my age the bling of a two tone suits me perfectly! Anyway I liked it so much I got the bug and last summer I bought myself a GMT master 2 tt and then in november I bought a 31mm tt Datejust for my wife. I bought all three watches from Quark in Yokohama and Ginza stores. Quark did not have any of them in stock but sourced them for me. All were brand new with stickers and full guarantee etc, and all I got for nearly 20% less than AD list. Bofore I bought I did my reserch and checked out AD's in Japan and UK and even though being a non-UK resident I could get them tax free in the UK it still worked out 5% more expensive than from Quark (at the current currency exchange rates). I also looked at Watchfinders in the UK, and I while I was on holiday in Hawaii over Chritmas I checked the AD in Waikiki, I still could not beat the deal I got from Quark. So I would recommend anyone looking to buy a Rolex new of pre-owned in Japan to check them out.

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi John, thanks for the comment! Sounds like Quark really did you right. There's another viewer who lives in Japan that got his Cerachrom Sub through Quark, and I think he was really happy...I think his came with a future service. I really should check them out in Tokyo. Actually, I haven't even been to check out watches since I've been in Tokyo. I checked out more watches in this video than a whole year in Tokyo. But I'll get around to it!
      Nice watches you have - love the 36mm Datejust, and you know how I feel about the GMT!

    Are you at all worried about the authenticity of any of these pieces? Or do you just have to know where to go to make sure they're a legit dealer?

    • @watchsymposium
      @watchsymposium  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I wouldn't be worried about the legitimacy of the pieces. These shops know what they're doing. Still, they might not be aware of the service history, so you might get something with replacement parts, so you still have to be careful. I don't think you'd get something with third party parts, so that's not too much of a worry...but I suppose that could be a risk.

Also LMAO at the ''you know what they say...Show me a beautiful gal', I'll show you a guy who's tired of screwing her''! hahahaha. True.
    Yep you could just have that GMT Master!! Seriously! But of course you want more than one watch, it's tempting :). Btw, you say you dont like 2-tone. That's fine, I like 2-tone. ESPECIALLY on a Jubilee DateJust with fluted bezel.
    About the price increasing of Rolex... Yes its good news for you but on the other hand you want to buy another Rolex possibly, so that's why it's bad. And Austin... You should feel bad for the other watch guys like me or someone else who is going to buy a Rolex and will have to pay more :D hahahah.

      I agree with you about a TT Datejust on a Jubilee...very good looking. I wish I could convince my dad to get one, and give up his Raymond Weil!

      Yup. And lastly just want to say, you're right... Rolex is (the) bitcoin (of watches). Just rising. Love it.

      The bit coin of watches?! Heh. Now moving in the opposite direction, or haven't you heard?

    Charming: 'Show me a beautiful girl and I'll show you a guy tired of screwing her...'. I paused the video just after you got on the bus at 47 past the hour. Rolex should add that to their GMT manuals.

    Very interesting video, thanks! Perhaps you wish the prices were lower because it would mean more “normal” people like you and I could afford them? It’s a shame that Rolex is becoming something only the very rich can afford, and mostly bought by those who want to be seen as wearing a Rolex, or investors, rather than people who really love the watches for what they are.

      ...I've thought a lot about my reservations about the price increases, and made a few vids on it - stay tuned!

      Right, it's a concept. And it's one that's very subjective.

    Having lived there, I can tell you Japan is the worst possible place to buy a Rolex or any luxury item that's not made in Japan. The whole mercantile system there is still designed to keep imports too expensive to compete with Japanese products. Pity that this "gaijin" doesn't seem to want to make us aware of that.

      It really depends on the exchange rate at any given time. If you are tourist here, and buy a Rolex, you can get the 8% tax back when you leave the country. so if the exchange rate is good at the time you could save money at an AD.
      As for the used market, there is probably no better place than Japan to buy. There aren't fakes floating around, and the examples are very very nice. I'm pretty sure, a tourist won't have to pay tax on those purchases either.
      Why don't you tell us the better country to buy a Rolex?

      "Used pieces getting unattainable." Visit Rolex.com, their USA site with list prices shown. Guaranteed no comparison to Japanese prices which are much higher regardless of the narrow band of currency fluctuations, whereby the Japanese intentionally keep the yen strong to discourage imports and vice versa. Easily, the best place I've seen to buy a Rolex or any fine Jewelry is Hong Kong. Here in NYC it isn't bad either, if you can find a good grey market seller. Unlike the Japanese, the HK Chinese just want to move merchandise and they expect you to haggle - while in Japan you're always a "gaijin." If you ever move from Japan with your collection, sell it all there, otherwise, you'll be in for an unpleasant shock.

      Checked out their site (not my first time), but nowhere do I see the prices listed. If you can find and link the page with the price of a GMT Batman, that would be useful, because I know what they go for here.

    To the few whom it may concern: Anyone taking horological advice from this rank amateur has only himself to blame for the consequences. He's fixated on Rolex and shills for the Japanese luxury market, which is stacked against all foreign-made goods, be they watches or Gucci handbags. Point being, there's more at issue here than the relative price of a GMT (which is sky-high in Nippon compared to the States). No, at issue is the whole subject of fair trade between two economic superpowers, and the misperception on the part of most Americans that the Japanese play the game fair and square. They don't, and they've been taking advantage of our good nature - and relative naivete - since the end of WWII and probably longer.
