I quit my job without a plan | Big 4 Audit | South African YouTuber

  • Hi there,
    I'm a chartered accountant who left their job in audit without another job lined up. I just wanted to share my experience and reasons for leaving the profession. I acknowledge that my previous firm played a massive role in me becoming a CA and value the experience I gained while there. In the end, it just wasn’t the path I wanted to be on.
    To my fellow CA's, this is not the sign you've been waiting for to quit your job lol I thought long and hard before making this decision and I encourage everyone to do the same
    Also, please extend some grace with the editing lol this was meant to be a random rant and not a high-quality production.

    Wow Ntao, I literally went through the same thing last year. Quit my job for the same reasons and the toxi work environment. I Quit in October 2020 without a job and served my 2 months notice because I was not trying to see these people in 2021. Went back to school full time because I had finally decide what I wanted to specialize in, fast forward in August got a new job, without even applying for it because I was not planing on working this year, I had saved to chill for a year and just be a student. Little did I know that God had other plans. I'm in a better work environment and I absolutely love what I do and the people I work with. I look forward to going to work and my weekends are mine unless it's something urgent and no more long working hour. Basically I'm a happy gal. Trust God and the process. So happy for you.

    Girl I just quit my job on Monday. It’s so toxic. There’s no training and I was a 1st year audit clerk at a firm in umhlanga and it’s so mis managed. I am shattered. These people don’t care about my mental health at all.

    I cannot express enough how much I can relate to you. I feel like we can be twins :). Also ended up quitting without having a plan or job. I LOVED audit, only realising now that it was because I was so familiar with the audits and job and I also started dreading what I was doing.
    I myself lived to work. Working nights and weekends, never resting! I made the decision to take care of my mental health rather.
    I am extremely proud of you! Well done!

    I studied IT and was good at it, I got a B Grade, but couldn't find a job in that field, so I've been an accountant for 6 years now, I hate it, I'm always stressed out and even in high school It was my least favorite subject, I've studied further just to try and fit in but I still hate it.... I'm thinking of starting afresh and going for a graduate program in IT, I want to go back so bad

    The legal profession is the same, hierarchy, toxic, hectic pressure and stress. No amount of money can replace ur health and sanity 🤷🏾‍♀️. Obvs, not all lawyers (Adv + Attorney s) feel this way but majority of my peers that I have talked to about this have the same experience. Thank you for talking about these "real" degree careers - they are not always all that.

    • @NtaoM
      @NtaoM  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much for watching Vanessa. A lot of professions are the same, I just wanted to talk about it seeing that a lot of people weren't. It's not always glamorous, people need to know this so they don't think they're alone

    • @you_are_welcome97

  • @learningsafehouse
    @learningsafehouse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Absolutely agree, money just ain't everything!💯
    Also never stay for PROMISES. I've worked for several people that treat me like $#! with the promises of future riches. Especially when you build peoples business's up ypu feel like you could make partner in a few years but deep down you know it will happen & if it does you still will never be an equal to them.
    I took the same leap of faith this year and quit a toxic workplace to study further, in my late twenties. Eish.
    But it's the best decision I've ever made, I wake up every morning excited for the day now. 💣
    Keep up the great videos,
    we need that Marco collab next!😄

    My moment of clarity also came while I was on secondment where I saw for myself that people are actually living full wholesome lives out there and what we were putting ourselves through in big 4 in SA was ridiculous and had to stop soon. I'm glad we're in a much happier place right now. 🙏🏼😊

    Good video! It seems odd that you quit in light of the fact that you made manager quickly. With that kind of work ethic, and your extremely charismatic personality, it seems like you could have made partner early in your career . I was just wondering in your culture would you have discussed the decision with your parents and were they for or against it?

    • @NtaoM
      @NtaoM  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Andrew, you’re right, I could have climbed the ladder quickly. But I’m glad I made the switch to something more suitable where I can still use my interpersonal skills and technical abilities. I didn’t mention this in the video but I didn’t tell my family I quit, my mom specifically wouldn’t understand and would likely try to talk me out of it. She’s happy it worked out but she thinks it was a bit of a risk
