Uncle Tone is right. Starbury was too big but Spike wrote it for him. Kobe declined cause he had them 3 air balls in the playoffs and he wanted to solely focus on basketball that summer.
Love this movie. Ever since "Get Out" Tone been on POINT lol. He be breaking these movies DOWN. Stuff I ain't even notice. Fan of the show. I used to think Ray Allen was bad in this movie, now I actually like his performance. It made it more real that he wasn't a professional actor.
This podcast is gonna be around forever. They got the Creed Trilogy, Friday trilogy, More Spike movies, Devotion, Sorry To Bother You, The Wayans movies. Yeah, I love this podcast.
Film is a classic I remember my parents taking me and my Brother to go see it when it first came. I remember my Mom making us cover our eyes for certain scenes lol 🤣🤣🤣.
Best B-Ball character is shepherd in Above the Rim. He got busy. Carried the team on his back and hadn't played in years. I agreed with tone the moment he gave the scenario.
Great review! I’m surprised y’all didn’t talk about the symbolism between Jesus Shuttlesworth throwing the ball over the fence and Jake throwing the basketball over the wall in the yard at the end of the movie. I think it kind of brought things full circle and symbolized forgiveness between father and son.
My favorite fact of this movie. Jesus role was originally for kobe but he was too focused on ball advised they use Ray Allen. Before his death kobe said he didn't get around to watching it #mamba
I think Jesus shuttlesworth would be bigger than basketball. He's thr kinda guy that comes into the league with a story to tell. Hes the type that would mature fast get married be well known because of his play and name and ultimately does 10 yrs retires and become a business man or exec
This is one of the greatest basketball movies. Get we please get reviews on the following movies that were released in 1998: The Players Club Caught Up
this was an amazing review. playing basketball in high school and college this movie is a classic. we watched this movie all thru high school, and college lol. ONly thing is LaLa didn't say shit real. She sold herself short. And had enough nerve to claim jesus had no worries....that was some BS. he had plenty of things to worry about, plenty of pressure that he had to face everyday. Its all about perspective
THE LINE YALL SKIPPED IN THIS MOVIE WAS AFTER THE FINAL GAME JAKE TELLS JESUS "GET THAT HATE OUT YOUR HEART-OR ELSE ULL BE JUST ANOTHER NGA-LIKE YOUR FATHER" THAT LINE CHANGED JESUS. HE NEW JAKE SPOKE FROM PERSPECTIVE AND ALL THAT D MEASURING JESUS WAS DOING DIDNT MATTER CUZ IT WASNT REAL. HE WANTED TO LOVE HIS DAD....BUT NOT ONLY THAT JAKE GIVE HIM HIS BASKETBALL AND SAYS UTS YOURS KEEP IT. HE GAVE HIM LIFE IN THAT MOMENT "Ball is life" that's the whole these of the movie. Each time there is a transfer of power or a momentum shift in the act or poignant moment the ball changes posession.....
You look at Forest Whitaker , Chadwick Boseman Rip , Laurence fishburne , wesley minus Martial arts , Mahershala Ali , dennis Haysbert , Jeffrey wright , their not one quality they have Denzel doesnt , he has the look , the charm , the commanding voice and mannerisms , The jordan of black actors
11:23 “Jesus is being disrespectful.” Jake was disrespectful first. And it’s implied that this happened regularly. You have to give respect to get it, and parents are no exception. Children are human beings too, and they have breaking points like anyone else. You guys said it yourselves, Jake pushed him pass his breaking point. The proper way to handle this was for Jake to admit that he was wrong and apologize. Parents can be wrong too, and that’s ok. The “disrespect” from Jesus was a direct result of Jake’s belligerence, not because he’s inherently disrespectful. This is that *TOXIC* “because I said so” parenting mentality that destroys families. And this is proven throughout the movie. Bottom line, stop claiming disrespect when kids call you out on your bs. Especially when you drove them to it. Don’t let them overstep, obviously. But don’t let your pride get in the way of a healthy relationship either.
I don’t think they would of fit the role. John salley would of probably been to old. Spike was mainly looking for younger star to play the role. That’s why he was tryna get Kobe or stephon Marbury
"Get that hate out your heart son" are the iconic words I hung on still til this day from one of my favorite basketball movies.
This podcast is reminding me just how great our black films are. Classic after classic
✊🏾💯
Uncle Tone is right. Starbury was too big but Spike wrote it for him. Kobe declined cause he had them 3 air balls in the playoffs and he wanted to solely focus on basketball that summer.
And Marbury actually was from Coney Island and he went to Lincoln HS .
Young Jesus was Jade Yorker. He was Willie on Gridiron Gang.
I thought that was him
1998 classic, Fun fact Kobe should’ve played Jesus but declined the role. The scene when Denzel Knocked out DeAndre still funny to this day😂
The punch was crazy lol
@@thekingdomofcoffbizz5638that was actually an elbow. Homie learned those 52 blocks

FELLAS...PLEASE REVIEW: THE FIVE HEARTBEATS!!!
The most impactful scene in the movie is when Jake sent to Jesus “Get that anger out your heart Boy or YOU”LL BE JUST ANOTHER NIGGA LIKE YOUR FATHER.
This podcast is gonna be around forever. They got the Creed Trilogy, Friday trilogy, More Spike movies, Devotion, Sorry To Bother You, The Wayans movies. Yeah, I love this podcast.

What about when Jake went to the cemetery to visit his wife's grave? That was moving....
The pastor from our church took the YPD to see this movie and we had a discussion after. I tell you if you saw the women from the church faces😂😂😂
The movie role origally went to Kobe, but he turned it down and it went to Ray Allen
My favorite fact of this movie. Jesus role was originally for kobe but he was too focused on ball advised they use Ray Allen. Before his death kobe said he didn't get around to watching it #mamba
Iverson said he was offered the role but he laughed and said he couldn’t act. Would’ve been cool to see him or Stephon to play that role.
The best fictional basketball player in the movies is Butch McRae from Blue Chips💯
Tony Island is brilliant 😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm actually in that area right now as I type this
Great review. Much love from MD.

Leon from Above the Rim is definitely the GOAT!!!

Duane Martin was really in the NBA tho
Jesus was based off Steph Marbury
Jake was a better Shooter

Rick Fox could’ve done this role. John Salley could’ve done it.
I don’t think they would of fit the role. John salley would of probably been to old. Spike was mainly looking for younger star to play the role. That’s why he was tryna get Kobe or stephon Marbury
