I think the most important point is missing here. If you find your self in a situation where you have to defend yourself against a knife attack, you have to be aware of getting injured 100%. The only question is how bad the injuries are. So, don't believe you can escape unharmed.
After the fight is over. Please check your own body for any kind of wounds. Due to the adrenalin it might be possible that you will not feel every slash or stab.

I work on the doors and a lad got stabbed outside the pub during a fight with a 3inch stanley blade he walked off after and got in a taxi. He only realised he was stabbed half way home when his adreniline dumped. I split up the fight and no one even saw the blade. Thankfully he was OK.

You guys are totally right but this are good techniques that Jesse is showing. But the cutting part. You don’t tell the student that they can get cut when you train with swords either or a naginata or a spear. But as long as your dealing with a blade you can get cut and the longer your exposed to that situation it will eventually happen. And as always the best self defense is not to be in that situation from the beginning, but you don’t always have that choice.

I had a knife pulled on me when I was 21 , riding at the back of a bus . Guy wanted my phone .
My Karate training came in but not how you’d expect. I shifted in my chair (almost like a super low kibadachi stance) so as to reveal the guy to the rest of the bus and he placed his knife hand down out of view and his other hand over the top . Literally at that second I bolted out of my chair and screamed blue murder - driver halted the bus and called the cops , but the assailant fled through the emergency window at the back of the bus and was never caught

For as impractical as TMA is in a knife situation, this is easily the most practical and 'real' tutorial utilizing such that I have seen. Major props for:
-advising to run away or comply, and only engage when you have no other choice.
    -groin strikes
-NOT WRESTLING BECAUSE YOU MAY GET STOMPED.
-the outer parry/head-slap combo, because i had never learned that, but I wish I had.

When I was stationed in Europe. We learned knife defense from an old school Spetsnaz soldier. 1st priority is to neutralize the deadly force. Any movement that involves 2 hands against one is most effective. 2nd priority is taking him to the ground to eliminate his mobility. The most important principle instructors fail to mention. Is to accept that you will get cut. Accept it so you’re not hesitant to implement your technique. That will save you from being stabbed and cut in critical areas of your body.

This is exactly what I love about karate. My dojo makes it clear that they practice techniques very similar to BJJ and kickboxing. It’s a karate dojo, but the goal of self defense is the priority. It doesn’t have to exactly be karate or look like karate to help your self defense.

  • @MauroSanna

First rule of defence against knife: try to run away. Well said Jesse.
Second rule: be aware that you will 100% get cut. So train your cold blood for the inevitable. There is no such a thing like a collaborative situation. The attacker will definitely cut you.
The only thing you can do is to damage control and try to survive.
If you can handle the first two rules, then you are good to go and try all the techniques suitable for these type of attacks.

I had a friend who was a security guard in a night club. He had to defend against a broken bottle once (wich is almost a knife lets say) so he threw a very strong front kick with his body bent behind...the attacker falled in his back and so the other guards got him.
He sayd "legs are longer than arms, dont let them even come close"

  • @Ironheart73
    @Ironheart73 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Our instructor told us these defensive techniques
    1. If you can, run away, back off, keep your distance, the further away you are the least likely the blade will reach you.
    2. Use anything available for a weapon that will fend him off. A belt with a buckle is reliable
    3. If available go for higher ground, like a table or the stairs, then fend off with your legs. Again maintaining distance is key
    4. If you are somehow cornered, just give him what he is asking to end the confrontation, self-preservation should be first
    5. If you must fight, then expect you will get cut. Just try your best to minimize damage. Protect your face, and your torso where vital organs are. If you can deflect the cut somehow with your forearms, the better.

Using your surroundings can also be helpful. Like a chair or maybe pick up a rock or sand and throw it at his face. Or just run and remove your belt while running and then face him. Easier said than done. But hey instead of panicking, we can do all these. I believe real martial arts will give us this presence of mind as we always deal with pressure during full contact kumite, osu!

To running away being the first tactic and that physical confrontation is the last resort. I just heard the beginning and that already got me. All people think that when u have karate and your a black belt for any belt u can defend a knife attack easily. Like u always say belts doesn't matter. U should always try talking ur why out of a fight or just run if u have a chance. My one friend also did karate and he was purple belt and he was in a fight there was like 2 or 3 people but he just punched the one guy done and ran. Easiest way to win a fight 😂🥋 thanks for making this videos.

If the knife is kept so static and the robber relies on the intimidating effect of his blade, defense is relatively easy. It becomes difficult when the attacker waves his knife, or as a madman stings. In the event of such an attack, only vigilance, nimbleness and unscrupulousness can help.

Glad you explained this using moves out of kata. I had a friend who is a very good BJJ practitioner under the usual assumption we cannot grapple. He was shocked that not only could I but could counter and reverse his. Yes, I am an Escrimador but my foundation will always be Isshin-Ryu Karate. I showed him Naihanchi and he just didnt see it. So I performed it on my back the way my sensei taught me 23 years ago when I asked him about grappling. My friend couldn't believe I pulled the guard, triangle choke, guillotine choke and several counters and reversals from it.

I don't know, but I can't see myself doing this in a real life situation. I'll be panicking too much to remember anything, the attacker will be pumped to the rim with adrenaline and probably not so nice to let me push his knife away and throw him to the ground.
I'd hope to do it the easy way: If I get the chance that the losens his grip while I cooperate, I'd just punch a cheap shot against whatever is unprotected and run.

Those are excellent techniques, Jesse, well demonstrated. This is why karate kata are so important. Many kata movements are close-in grappling techniques that you cannot use in sport karate. I would advise NOT to let someone get close enough to grab your collar as we see at the beginning of this video. Punch or kick them them BEFORE they get that close. I read a book by a retired senior police officer who said that the best technique against a knife is to THROW you wallet at them and then run away. You only fight if you are cornered and can't get away. But NEVER let them get close enough to grab or stab you. Hit them first. Yes, karate is only for defense but in some situations, the best defense is a good offense.

The first thing to do is to understand the psychology of weapon attacks. The weapon is not to be feared but the assailant wielding it. Think of him as not a knife man or a gunman but a man with a knife or a gun.
    Thank you again Jesse Sensei!

If they are hiding their knife to move closer, it will be a MUCH smaller knife lols...Filipinos use the Balolong for example...very compact...I like the Kerambit...amazing tool...

I really liked the video, and the sense that Jesse is trying to explain here. Of course, if someone has to defend against a knife, they must be prepared to get cut. It is not realistic to think that it will come out completely without any scratch.

I've always thought of finding the closest weapon. If he's close you could quickly grapple with him to get the knife away. If there's a broom or a broad object. You could use it as a weapon of defense against the attack. A staff or broom would cover a long length that the hands could not, or a broad object like a trash can lid would cover an area.
Speaking from someone who does sword art and karate, but always acknowledge the kubodo side as the karate weapons was use to defend okinawa when there were lack of weapons. A staff would be a polearm while a trashcan lid would be a shield.

My old kickboxing/self defence instructor tries to avoid knife defence as its a very difficult thing to teach due to not everyone is going to grab you like you learned in training, but he did show us some since we kept asking.
