Lala from 62 ECC (East Coast Crip), engaged in a knife fight against some Mexican Mafia. He came out unscathed, while the Eme members suffered some stab wounds. No one died. This was at Folsom. There are a lot more stories where people have survived.
You won't get distance. They won't show you the knife till they are in your face, or even behind you. Good luck trying to outrun someone who's standing so close their breath hits you in the face.
@@arkot5458 Good point but a lot of comments here lack common sense. This video is just a demonstration when you have no way out of it. Better try to minimize the damage if you can't run. And sometimes training like can give you awareness on how knife attackers do theit thing so you can run first before getting cornered
Knife defence is very very very hard, you will get cuts, however, in countries like mine and many other South East Asian countries, thugs do not carry guns or have access to guns as easily as in the West. Hence, weapons use in fights is sharp and pointed blades aside from stick etc... Learn to defend against knives and sharp weapons is a must and it is better than nothing, you'll have a better chance to survive when you cannot "RUN"! Funny that ppl always say "RUN", thugs do not show you they have a knife, the moment you see the knife, you have seconds to react, no one is going to show you the knife until they are close enough to stab your ass. If someone shows you a knife before even coming close to you, yes run! The purpose of the drills for knife defence is to train you to take as minimal damage as possible while returning the strikes to put the other guy down or give you enough time to escape. Growing up in rough areas in poor countries, fights are always with knives, machetes etc... the more you train, the higher chance you will survive with no life-threatening injuries. If you do see a knife coming and you can't run because you're trapped in a space and you have enough time, grab something else around you to defend it, a chair, your belt, roll up your newspaper or magazine, bare hand combat with knives is basically last resort and you better be sure your mind and your body are committed to accept damage and be ready with no remorse to really hurt the opponent or kill him. All your training will go to shit if your mind is not ready to really hurt or kill someone when facing such a situation.
I like this perspective. Everyone keeps emphasizing running away which is fine in certain situations but if you embrace that mentality too much, as you said, your training will go to shit. Your resolve will be weak.
@M A T you should follow the body not the knife. You can’t keep up with the knife directly so it’s probably better to focus your vision on the opponent’s movements as well, keeping the blade in your peripheral. But of course you should definitely run when the chance presents itself. That’s when parkour comes in handy fr fr
There is a difference in knife fighting in the east an west. Mostly in the west, they bring out the knife before the fighting starts so you have a chance to run unless cornered. But in southeast asia, mostly you can't tell if someone has a knife until you engage into a brawl then they brought out the knife so there's little chance in running.
The demonstration of the drill at speed has re-embedded my deep conviction to NEVER get trapped into a knife fight. All I can see is a rapidly spreading network of wounds forming all over one's body. It only takes a fraction of a second for the attacker to slip past your blocks and counters and you are done. No wonder warriors in the days of edged weapons wore armor, there is no way to protect all of the vulnerable areas from persistent skilled or even semi skilled attacks.
Of course there is a way to protect against even Samurai level skill bladed weapons attacks. That's why modern militaries don't worry about bladed weapons anymore. They are essentially useless in 2024. Just pull out a firearm and the fight is halfway over. Even works against multiple knife attackers.😂
@@JA3dwards well, if it is legal for me to wear a vest and I live in a country where everyone is allowed to own firearms and I am concerned about self defense; then yes, of course I do. And I will actually have two grins. One because I am the one wearing a vest in an armed country full of people raised to be sharks, and two the people who have been laughing are probably the reason why there is a psycho with a gun.
Been boxing for years, one of the best self defense tactics is limit your time around humans in public. Always be alert, don’t put nothing past anyone. Humans are more emotional than logical. Conflict is not always avoid, however “staying out the way” and keeping humans out of your business is very powerful if mastered.
Yep no defense. I fought 3 dudes. By luck I was winning till the knife came out. I got stabbed 3x from behind, 1slice on my shoulder and super stab on my chest slicing my artery. This is for learning and demonstration purposes. In real life doesn't matter what training you have if you get stabbed you're in trouble, if the master got stabbed in a demonstration, he's an idiot.
The title says everything about this video. You can practice to help you better understand but you are not gonna win fighting against a person with a knife.
And i doubt people stab once and leave their arm hanging. Its usually a grab and stab10+ times Most people stabbed to death dont have 1or 2 stabs, its usually wel into the double digits.
Indeed. FMA is really effective. I learned the basics of it in Manila when I was in the University.. my instructor told me if my opponent is holding a knife, I get out of there as fast as I can. The techniques, and movements are there to give us higher chance (not a guarantee, just higher chance) of surviving if we don't have any other choice, and that if we have the opportunity during the altercation - to attack the opponent. We were never taught to be out there and engage with people, because that's instant ticket to afterlife no matter how "trained" we think we are. So if you have the chance, usually the window is early on in the encounter - you disengage and run.
I knew a man with a black belt in 3 martial arts. He told me the best knife defense without a gun was to wrap a jacket around your arm and run like hell.
Stupid advice. If you run, you're exposing your back. Why the F would you remove one armor on an area where you most likely get hit? Or does your friend have arms behind their backs?
I did this for years. I taught classes , went to seminars from other teachers. Then one day a nutjob pulled a box cutter. My experience was, you are going to get cut. It’s very very different than what you think. The body is very aware that it’s in danger. Disarms and fancy stuff isn’t normally going to work. Exit if possible.
I encountered a knife attack when i was in my teenage years. No matter how alert and fast you are, you will still get cut. Only fast option i had in mind is to have my right arm get the cut and punch the guy with my left arm. It actually worked but my right forearm got seriously injured that time.
It is not easy to defend using your hand while he has all the ways to attack. Better run if you can or use something in your hand and defend in one strike to get him down.
Here is the conundrum. Any practiced defence against a knife has poor chances of working... but if you do get cornered by a knife weilder and can't run then you need to have a few drilled ideas rather than none. I once disarmed a knife weilder by doing something sudden and unexpected.. but I was extremely lucky that it worked.
i told my brother to stab me so hard and he did i dodge the knife without a scratch and even disarm him with cuts and blood dont worry my brother and i is nice
Found the idiot. 10% chance of disarming the attacker vs 100% chance of getting stabbed trying to run away from someone in hugging distance. These commenters does not really think do they?
There was like a month where me and a group of friends used to carry red sharpies on us at all times. The goal was, if you saw one of your friends, sneak up behind them and slice the "knife" across their throat and say "shhhhhh" while you "killed" them. We all had red marks on our throats for a month straight. It was pretty funny but got out of hand at one point lol
In Shotokan, we were taught to RUN AWAY if possible, even if you were winning the fight prior to the knife being introduced. If there is nowhere to run, and you must engage, you must immediately elevate the focus of your attack to lethal or near lethal strikes only. Your goal is no longer just to knock your opponent out, or to wound him so he won't continue fighting. Your very NEXT strike has to be a death strike, unfortunately. Lastly, don't attempt a Wing Chun "trap" move, because if that doesn't work with a knife in reality. You will be dead in a few seconds.
@@iceman5117 A clean strike to the throat can be fatal. A downward elbow strike to the head or the back of the neck can also cause death or severe brain damage. In fact, any strike to the neck is considered lethal force. A strike to the temple can be deadly with enough force. Fish hooking and kicking the groin are not necessarily lethal, but they can be incapacitating enough to allow a chance to escape.
In infantry school we were taught to point and shoot. Only when you are out numbered by a more heavily armed opponent do you turn and tactically retreat. Of course, infantry tactics are made for real life. That's probably why modern militaries train in them rather than stuff that worked before the musket. Pretty much as long as everyone has been alive. If you are training without firearms or explosives, you are not a martial artist. You're just an athlete. Frfr.

I've read a few of the comments and I agree with what I've read 100% and their advice is very very realistic and comes from experience. And I've had martial arts training and in even then it basically comes down to you always , accept the reality that you are going to get cut and bare handed defense against the knife is the last resort. The only difference in this video is we were trained if at all possible grab the wrist or arm of the attacker and hold on and then go lethal because they're rarely is there ever age second Chance in a knife fight.
The bottom line is you practice this drill for the situations where you are stuck in a close encounter with a knife. I've seen a fair share of knife fights where the person with the knife loses. The defenders focused mainly on kicking and finding objects to throw or swing. For example if you have a chair, you will have a decent advantage with range.
Finally someone saying it like it really is. I'm getting rather annoyed at all these people who insist that knife defence is impossible and serious cuts are a certainty. I train with people who I cannot land anything on which means if I tried to attack them with a knife they would escape unharmed every single time.
The knife wilder loses only when its his/her first time using it. A real knife attack is based in 1 hand grabs and the other stab or slice, this demo is just a wing chun game.
In 9/10 times you will be because thugs only use knives because they can't fight without them.If your trained in knife attack then your training will ensure you faster.
@@allangrant6349 right training, not this one. the worst mistake against a short weapon is getting into short-range close-combat. this old-man is virtually commiting suicide by putting himself in the best range for the knife. he has obviously not been trained in actual martial arts.
As a Navy intel veteran who received intensive close combat training, knife defense drills are done to trigger muscle memory. Of course science is factored into most of the drills, but your fight tactic and goals should always adjust to the situation(location of the fight, thin thickness of your and the opponents clothes, length of blade, arm reach blahblah..)
He says, “the more we practice this” is his best advice IMO. After 30 years it’s repetition and building skill sets. Reality is you’re going to get hurt, just need to hurt the attacker more.
@@redclayscholar620 absolutely, even then you have to step off line which causes him to change his trajectory which might buy you a fraction of time. First thing he is going to do is trap and slice you gun arm and then go to town on the rest of you.
I used to spar against a rubber knife attack, which is the safest way to build skill & confidence. I found that kicking is preferable to getting up close & involved with the hands
I also think that, but even if has higher range and higher chances of hitting an unaware enemy, it has it's downsides. Your legs are needed to stand up, and losing balance due to leg cuts, yeah, that's risky. Either poke from as far as you can or use a grapple while holding the enemy's hand (the one with the knife).
@@Player-df7ny in self defense situations, you aim your kicks low, not high. So not much chance of getting cut. You kick at the shins, groin, knees, and ankles. Vast majority of people cannot take a strong kick or stomp at their lower regions - they will naturally move out the way. So it will either create space, which can allow you to escape, or the kick will land and damage the attacker, also giving you some room to escape.

He's very correct. I've been a FMA student my whole life. Most people focus on strictly getting control of the knife right out of the gate and that's it. IE BJJ guys lol. Most people that attack you aren't going to expect to get hit in the face right away as their blade gets deflected. Yes timing and repetition of practice is key. So many people mock drills but don't understand why they are done. It's to train a reflex into you. But KISS always.
People mistake these drills as "ineffective repetitions that must be as realistic as possible". The role of a decent combat martial arts instructor is to show how to apply these drills in a realistic fight without the practitioner panicking like 90% of the time thinking on what exact technique to use just to put the practitioner in a better and safer position
As a bjj guy... Any bjj guy with their head on straight knows the value of grappling/wrestling in self defense is to get your ass OFF the ground and break contact. Fights are chaotic, falls happen, you don't want to be stuck under an assailant. When it comes to knife defense, yeah no martial art is going to help much except maybe improving your chance of escape by not getting grabbed etc.
@@Fera-gr5mmTechnically, legs have greater range than arms, which is great for show fights, but in a real fight, boxing is more useful. Legs don't have much more range than arms. And a knife extends the range of an arm.
I am 63 and as a lifetime martial artist I can say that this is nonsense. It looks great and seems logical and, if you are a master with years of training, it might even be possible, with a small knife and an incompetent attacker but do not try this in real life or you will end up badly cut, or dead.
This, your probability of winning a knife fight is so effing low against even an untrained numbskull you may as well pick up your back to back PowerBall winnings.
But knowing and practicing at least this much when you've got only seconds to react, might make a change. When you cannot run When you cannot grab a weapon When you can't reason
@@thehumanpractice2985 That's true but the same might be said of any instinctive reaction. In the circumstance you specify, there are only two options, fight or submit. If we also surmise that submission means wounding or death, fighting is the only valid response. That still does not justify teaching knife defence as if it really works because it does not. I have studied martial arts for 50 years. I hold advanced black belts in three different disciplines. And if I was challenged with a knife I would submit and try to talk my way clear. One of the biggest problems with the westernization and spread of martial arts is that it coincided with movies and TV and it has led people to believe they can almost be supermen, if they train hard enough. Such belief is delusional.
@@Outspoken.Humanist "When you can't reason" Too. When you can't talk your way out of it. So as an advanced martial artist, I assume you would fight before just submitting to death. And there are actually 3 responses: Its Fight, Flight, or Freeze. And in the other hand, some people might react just out of anxiety. instinct is nullified by anxiety. Anxiety fuels fear, Instinct is usually way more accurate than fear. Having watched a couple of these videos might help to nurture visual information on how to actually move. Training them might help overcome that anxiety and actually let the instinct react. An educated body he's with that. Sto saying it's bs because it is not. Maybe you've got too much weight on those years thinking you know it all just because you've got 3 belts. Good for you, really, but no one cares. I've survived 8 assaults, 3 of them armed and out o those I fought in 2. A couple cuts, nothing critical. Do I recommend doing that? No, I was stupid, reacting more than acting, but to a certain degree I did have no choice. Does someone care? Probably not, as much as people don't really care about your experience. Spitting it out straight, showing advantages and disadvantages, telling the nice part and the ugly part, that's how it should be. What you say about anxiety and instinct is true but I maintain that watching a few videos will not teach you how to move and thinking you can take on a man with a knife is likely to get you killed. If your attacker wants you dead rather than to rob you and if you truly have no other option then obviously you fight, whether you have any training or not but videos will not help you and even training is not a guarantee. You take care and I hope you never have to experience such violence again.
You should watch the TimKennedy knife defense. His opponent did not back down, they were on the ground, switching knife hand, etc. That was pretty impressive. You almost got no chance not to get stabbed. But this teacher got it right though. If you are not attacking, you are getting cut for sure.
I used to do that drill. What happens if someone just goes full speed sewing machine with a death grip? It doesn't work so good. So may of these drills are beautiful, but I've never seen anything close to how they look when people go all out, full speed.
What an odd comment. You did this drill but then said "what happens if...?" If something else happens, there are dozens of other drills mean to address different situations. Happen to remember the name of this drill? Or the 5 that classically precede it?
I had a martial arts teacher who is also working as a security guard in a company. According to him you must never grab the wrist cause it would still give them them chance to cut you no matter how shallow it is. And told us to always grabbed the back of the elbow. That way unless he has a knife literally as big as his forearm he wouldnt be able to reach you. Only if he changes hands. And by that point one has enough time to either see that coming or can attack themselves.
I've always thought grabbing the wrist is dangerous because jerking the arm back is one of the more powerful movements a human can make so instead of having your hands around their wrist you now have them around their blade. I'm not sure how you get past the knife to the elbow in your scenario Deniz. Do you need to get behind or beside the attacker to do this?
This is not something I received a ton of training in but my teacher was Filipino and knew this stuff the guy is doing and showed me a few things. He did show me that at one point, going to the upper arm by the crook of the elbow, for the reason you said. Think about it...attacker can't do much with the lower arm if you're controlling the upper. And if you have a choice between the two sections, grab the one that doesn't have the blade, yes? If you can jam that shit up long enough to deliver a strong counter, it could save your life. I know someone who was mugged while drunk. As the mugger grabbed his stuff, he decided to try to grab his money/things back. Mugger pulled a knife and guy grabbed the blade instead. Hand sliced wide open while very impaired, wandered the streets bleeding, a passerby saw him and called 911. If not for him, ya know. I saw a photo of his bloody jacket and it appeared he wasn't sober enough to help himself.
Grabbing the wrist is dangerous because if he's using the knife right he WILL cut you first and it will be extra nasty because the momentum of your hand will push it against the blade. Exact details will vary depending on the type of knife but that's basically what you're looking at.
Exactly, haha I now wear silver bracelet in each wrist, only a couple of inches wide, but so protective, and discouraging and undermining to your aggressor. Loved it.

How much i love the fluency of the technique and the skill level of the instructor (and student) , this only works in dojos with agreed "attack" patterns. I have been twice in a knife situation on the streets. My martial arts training helped me to stay calm and keep the threat in check. However, you do not stay within reach when someone is pointing a knife at you and you do not move your arm close to the hand holding the knife with the intention to block or guide it. That would be your last option.
Can properly low leg kicks keep a "non stealth" knife attacker at distance? They shouldn't be able to touch you with a knife if you can see them and your keeping them off with low leg kicks.
You will get hurt when defending a knife attack. The real opponent will never do the techniques you've trained. Use another weapon like a stick to keep distance. A kitchen chair or something like that can be very useful.
Or maybe we should bring C4 in our bag...just saying. Or.....in the time of COVID like this, you just need to sneeze....the attackers will be terrified....
Yeah, but it's always the same question, that pops up at this point: what if you don't have a chair or something like that? Is that correct? If that is the case, then I agree that marking training is relevant to this topic, and I also agree that the topic was absent from this video. However, regardless of whether or not this particular instructor is familiar with that specific training component, what I heard from the video was: "Our style focuses on Offensive and Counter-offensive actions in lieu of traditional defensive perspectives; our argument is that any time spent solely on defense is a net-loss game because the opponent's knife has a hard advantage against bare flesh." As a pure thesis statement, summed up in a 2-minute video, I think that's great! I can imagine a follow-up video covering ways to demonstrate and practice that skill, and one way of measuring the effectiveness of that strategy would be to use white shirts and red chalk/paint/markers, then to practice Offense/Defense and measure cuts, then to practice Offense/Counter-Offense and measure cuts - we should all be applying the scientific method and empirical evidence in our training. If that's what you are suggesting, then yes, I agree that the extension of these practices would make for a valuable lesson, and I would love to see someone make that video 😊
Mr.Ladra(guy in the video) does teach live drills. What he showed was a demonstration and he should have stated as much but he knows that would never work on the street. It's a "drill"! Not a drill I would train but a drill never the less. I love the title of the video though.
...I must add, your students are not likely to want to show 'you' what a fool you are in front of the rest of the class, you need someone that is willing to do this with a marker tapped to the end of a short stick with abandon, really slice and thrust like they mean it. I can't speak for the instructor in this video because I dont know him, but years ago I took self defense classes similar to this. I think my instructor was more responsible in warning the danger and the probable damage you would suffer getting into a knife fight, HOWEVER I think many people in the comments are taking this in a very wrong and ignorant way. If you get into a knife fight, first it's better to have some training rather than nothing. Second, a lot of the techniques shown already count with you getting hurt to some extent; but cuts can be healed. Its one thing for you to be cut on your forearm or your hand than in stomach or neck. Obviously it's best to run, but sometimes that option just isn't there, and you stand a better chance of protecting yourself if you have at least some techniques that van allow you to survive a knife fight, even if you dont come out unscathed.
As someone who has learned the knife wielding aspects of Kali alone, this is the best open handed defenses that I've seen due to the fact that he is using two hands to try to prevent a fish tail from the man holding the blade. However it needs to be noted that the man with the blade can still fish tail enough to prevent himself from being stabed but not enough to cut with two hand resistance. What this means in reality is that the fight would end up in a stale mate and all of the fancy moves by the originally bare handed guy wouldn't happen. As someone who has learned the offensive use of Kali knife fighting I'll bet that I'll find some way to cut the defender up! When he saw the guy was about to pull something out of his pocket, he rushed the guy then punched him with the intention of knocking him out. his opponent got pressured a bit during the scuffle but eventually was able to draw his weapon When my brother saw that he ran but got chased so he resorted on creating distance between him and his attacker while anytime the guy lunges, he threw a jab knocking the guy back. On the process he still got cut in the face and good thing other bystanders helped to stop the fight but it was very close for him. Then I also happened to see another incident on the streets where two teenagers started fighting but the other one also happens to carry a knife. The other kid had good instincts, he ran away then when he saw a rain gutter lying on the streets, he grabbed it then used it as a make shift weapon. He employed the same tactic of creating distance between him and his attacker, then same thing anytime the guy tries to get close. He whacks him with the intention of knocking or killing him never allowing the knife attacker gets close. To me thats a better strategy than this close quarter drills they show that looks like Hollywood choreograph fight moves. Of course this maybe just one part of many countless drills that may help you defend against a knife attacker and im not totally close minded. But these moves cant be easily performed by someone who never trained in martial arts. If you do decide to use this make sure these moves are second nature since in a fight you have less time to react
That's the point of his drills. Most of the time the knife comes out before you can create space. If you trained to block with the back of you arm then your natural instinct will be to block with the back of your arm without thinking and to attack at the same time which is really the only way to defend against a knife.
My TKD instructor got 6 assailants knocked out but still got cut open. He was a champion and Asian Games medallist. He always tells us to run when you get the chance. Life is more important. (they took away his kidneys after passing out)
It doesn't have to go down that way, but it could. His slashes were valid slashes. If someone tries to cut you horizontally that's what it would look like.
youtube comments on self defense back then: "why arent schools teaching this?" now: "yeah that's unrealistic" you guys are like fucking drones. everything the guy said in the video, was valid. obviously, if there is a chance to escape, you escape. but if ever you're in a bad neighborhood and get jumped by a group, it's better to have a 5% chance of surviving than 0%. and in case it wasn't obvious enough, you're not supposed to copy the motion, you're supposed to learn the reasoning behind it, and train the physique and reaction time to do so.
Don't ever try to resist and just run for your life whenever there is an open chance if you wanna live. It is good to play hero in video not in reality.
as many people have said.. running typically isnt an option.. more often than not, you are surrounded, or your backed into an alley or something with your escape path blocked off.. and even in a 1 on 1, the person isnt going to show you they have a knife until they are actively trying to stab you.. if they flash the knife before, they are just doing it as a scare tactic to force cooperation
The key to defending against a knife attack is to recognize the knife (if you actually intend to use a knife on someone you don't want them seeing the knife until it's too late) and control the knife hand. Of course the first knife defense is always to give them your wallet and run away as fast as you can. As for controlling the knife hand, it is better than punched and kneed by your opponent than stabbed by him. Two on one and keep the knife pointing away from your body at all costs.
Idk if teachers do this but I think it would be a good idea to take each student one at a time say after a session and ask for them to wait for you while you get something and then just randomly attack them as you're walking up to them in mid sentence or sneak up and attack them
Maybe it's better if the students email the teacher to meet them in a dark alley and the student instead waits inside the house, under the bed and when the teacher gets out of the bed, the student springs on the teacher wearing all black.
Getting attacked by a knife is kind of like getting bit by a dog. You're usually bleeding before you know you're being attacked. Most dogs bite by surprise and I think most knife attackers do the same thing. I've been bit a couple of times, but not stabbed yet.
This (your comment) is a lot closer to reality than becoming a kungfu master overnight, or within months or years, for the average person that faces an attack. I believe the teacher here could survive an encounter with a knife attacker with a tiny bit of luck, but then again, a knife attacker doesn't thrust his knife in slow motion.
I've been stabbed before and you're right. I thought the man punched me in the back, only when he took his third stab did I realise I was being attacked with a knife
The actual quote is The greatest victory is that which requires no battle. . I have won plenty of battles in self defence. Its basically what Ju jitsu is all about.
Yeah, Sun Tzu never said that. Remember he literally lived in the country that built the Great Wall to defend its own people, and it worked lol. China is a juggernaut now still. The nomad tribes from the steppes, not quite.
Defense “is the other guys problem." This is a fundamental Filipino mindset. Ask any Filipino about fighting in a life or death situation and they'll tell you "Una-unahan lang yan." Which means, it's just a matter of who kills who first accepting only two outcomes - either you die or you go to prison. And then "pagalingan nalang ng abogado yan" which means, worry later by getting the best lawyer. Basically, knife fights in the Philippines are fought that way that's why it's often quick. Best example are knife fights by hardened killers in Bilibid prison. Two fighters would duel using a rope to tie one of their hands on opposite end of the rope. With no way to escape or run, the only option left is find out who kills who first.
@M A T you think if I pulled a knife on you that I'm going to let you run? Thats a great idea though, give me your back, thats a nice wide target. The time it takes you to turn around and start to run im already on you, AND i have your back.. Running isn't always an option.
It is illegal to be offensive first. At least here in the USA, the assailant is whoever attacked first. I have no idea why the instructor is saying to be offensive when he is demonstrating counter attacks from the beginning of this choreographed sequence. Intercepting attacks and simultaneous attack/defense towards a criminal assailant are counter attacks in nature. If you walk towards someone and punch them in the face, you are a criminal assailant who was offensive.
@@aardvarkhendricks6555 - Those aren't choreographed moves. Those are are actual action and reaction to every strike. If you train long enough the movement is second nature and you won't need your eyes to do it. Both of you have only two hands, two arms a body and a head. There are only a limited ways one can attack with a knife. You can defend against yourself from it, but be prepared to get cut.
@@inisipisTV sure it is. They both followed attack and defense sequences they have learned in a stationary position. Notice the instructor only made 2 or 3 attacks in a rhythm. Same thing for the other guy he only did the same 2-3 defenses over and over. That's not what an assualt on a person looks like. It's better to move out of the way then stay stationary.
I see the comments saying you will get cut. The instructor clearly says that you will get cut in the process and he teaches how to not get cut in vital areas while you are defending.
@@ivanriverajr5012 Honesty I don't know. There is military knife training that can be taught and it can help you a lot in these kind of situations. You are never safe though even this moment we are not guaranteed we will live to see another day.
According to the latest survival manual, your best defense against a knife attack is apparently not a black belt in karate, but a good ol' morning cardio routine. You never know when you'll have to outrun a butter knife-wielding assailant on a rainy day!
Some years ago on the show testing soldiers from various units against each other, one test was two regular Marines against two different Special Forces knife fighters. The Marines won each contest, basically by aggresively moving to stick the knife fighters in the chest or body, no technique what so ever! I remember the better expert said the Marines didn't really try to fight with the knife -- what? Other than by chance achieving a wirst lock after taking a non lethal first strike, and/or striking the attackers eyes, directly, there is no defense for a knife from a committed attacher.
If you live in an area where knife attacks are so prevalent that you actually benefit from practicing close combat techniques like this, chances are you're better off finding alternative solutions. Following the advice from this video is going to get you killed with a very high chance. 1) Always scan your environment. 2) Avoid dead ends, especially in unknown environments. 3) Do your business and daily activities online so you can stay at home as much as possible. 4) Try not to travel alone. 5) Travel in your car when you can. Stay inside your car as much as possible. 6) When you're outside, try to stay on the move and be quick. 7) Take irrational/illogical routes (like circling the same block several times) before you enter potentially dangerous territory. This causes people who are following you to behave suspiciously. 8) Don't hesitate to quickly turn back around if an area makes you nervous for any reason. 9) Wear body armor (a light chain mail works, too). 10) Carry a gun. 11) Carry a pepper spray. etc. etc. These tips (and many more) are far more likely to save your life than the advice from this video. Change your whole mindset. You have the best odds of survival if you refuse to play unfavorable games. Get your enemies to play your game.
The problem i have is oftentimes they make the defense as complex as possible. A good example is when they show people getting stabbed in prison. In the matter of like 2 seconds you're stabbed dozens of times. You can possibly get away with getting stabbed once after that its dicey and you're already panicking you're not going to remember the 6 steps to disarm someone. The best thing to teach is CONTROL. how to minimally and effective control the knife weilding hand . From there you can side step their knee cap, headbutt, trip whatever. As long as you have control ot that arm you're already in a better spot
Create space, if you can. Space gives you time, time gives you options. You must accept the concept of getting cut in a self defense situation where a blade is the force multiplier. Thank you, Master Apolo.
This is the best technique Ive ever seen when it comes to disarming a knife. But there are slight weaknesses. A knife is a weapon, people who want to fight someone with a knife, someone who has a knife likely wins a fight.
This is the most on point and logical knife defense/offense. But this is hard to pull of in real situations, unless you have a steady focus and clear mind. Normally, we would be nervous when facing a surprise attacker. So it's either run, or fight.
This is not logical. You think your mind is going to figure out which side of the blade is going to cut ur arm? Bro create distance & run. This video is bs
I once parried a knife attack but instead of doing this Patty Cake Drill which is Ridiculous, I shoved my finger way into his eye!!! He became a Soprano Singer Instantly! You got to get Dirty in situations like these, expert or not!!!
But these "patty cake" drills lead to the poke of the eyes Or a swift strike to the throat Or a firm strike to the solarplex Etc. Etc. It is a means to re-direct the blade from their intended target: your vitals
kinda the point of the technique - unless you're talking about sneak attacks, the technique is meant for you to better gauge the speed and direction of the knife-wielding opponent.
@@vivie5015 I'm pretty sure it counts as a technique, then. Cause even in a drill, its still s technique to better your reflexes and control to counteract against an opponent.
Speaking from experience: You don't always see the knife before it gets you. Sometimes there is a request and upon negative response, you feel a sharp pinch in your lower back. You think you've been punched, so you turn around quickly and at that point, you feel a warm rushing sensation on your torso as you realize what just happened. It is only then do you see the blade in your attacker's hand.
If you are ever in the unfortunate situation where your assailant has a knife. Use any article of clothing you can to wrap around your hand and forearm as a makeshift shield. It will decrease your chances of getting cut and allow you to be more aggressive in your defense, and counter attack.
I think this is incredibly informative enough. Despite the other people bashin on it. I'm not saying watching it will help me survive unscathed. But it did certainly made me aware. Maybe my survival rate went from 0 to 10%. It's still something.
@@HeavensBladeTM No, I carry a gun and use something called situational awareness. I never liked drills in the Army but they're necessary because it is what it is and you have to do them. But when reality happens it's NEVER like a drill. This is IF IF IF IF IF IF. Do them if you want, have a party, lol.
@@jimmartin7881 Any combat training is drilling. Training is simulation, the closes thing to "life" ("live") you can get without being in combat. That's like saying target practice isn't "life," that's why they call it "practice."
Knife attack happens suddenly, it is a stabbing attack from below, aiming mostly at left side of your abdomen. It also depends on type of the knife, length, form of the blade and type of knife grip. If weapon in question is very sharp, it will be used in slashing manner, if it is KA-Bar knife, or push blade, it will have completely different motion model. Defense is very difficult. Two best ways of defense are using leather belt or heavy leather jacket. If it is haladi-like knife, shown technique will not work at all.
Probably one of the best and truethfull comment on the topic of selfdefence against knife attack I have ever read. Learning videos look like beautifully choregraphed Swan lake ballet dance, while the real life attacks look like a slasher sceene from Hitchcock' s Psycho movie.
In Silat, you need to grip attacker wrist, to avoid getting hit by the knife. We usually spar using Kris, in close combat, it's easier to get hit if we don't hold the wrist correctly. Even we using blunt Kris, you still get minor cut
Avoid confrontation by running away from the attacker. But if this is not possible and there’s no way to escape, my advise is to look at the stance of the attacker and judge the most likely direction of the attacking hand. Wait and move quickly to avoid the attacking hand and run. Do not attempt to disarm. I am a Wing Chun practitioner and if there’s no escape, I’ll position myself at a safe distance at a proper stance so that I’ll be able to avoid the attacking hand and use the attacker’s momentum and simultaneously attack the eyes, knee, groin, etc. Better said than done but it requires a lot of practice and excellent physical condition.
I used my finger bones to block blades. I am alive with only cool itchy scars. If one needs to sacrifice a body part I think an ear or a finger bone would be the easiest to mourn the least over.
Lol good joke. If you were serious however, don't even try that bullshit you won't be able to find a single opening in your opponent unless you are able to think, move and react way faster than they can. Life isn't anime. Time doesn't slow down for you when you manage to find an opening or when they leave themselves open. In games of course it works everyone has fixed movement speed and games function slow enough for everyone to react to. Not life because life isn't fair or balanced.
They love the show techniques like that in movies when in reality the best thing is to knock the person down pick up a baseball bat or kick the guy backwards the longer you are engaged with a person at close range the greater your chances to get hurt
It's always a danger to fight unnarmed; there's a small wall between being brave as to do so, and being stupid as to get killed when you had the chance of hiding or running. Of course this training is aimed to those who can't do so, when, for instance, you have to defend your family, fiends, etc or when you can't avoid the attack (elevators, small rooms, etc). Although IS Good to know some techniques, logic aims to the conclussion that, if not avoidable, always try to grab a powerful and bigger object, such as a chair or, if in the street (why fight an armed person while being unnarmed, if you can choose) use of common objects can provide a good defence. May not look as cool as disarming someone using the hands only, but should be the first option for common people -in terms of training- (99%). Also is important to clarify that instead of knifes there can be broken bottles, pieces of iron or wood, etc which can be used by attackers and are as dangerous as knifes. Usually knife attackers are not precisely experts, they just attack by using a knife (because it's what they have) and they target the head in fact (not only the chest as it's shown). Watch your back, most attacks will be at the back and not the front, remember that these men are not only evil but also coward, they are suitable to attack women or people at the back if they can choose. Last but not least, use of COMMON SENSE; not to go in a dark street at 2 am where there are many obscure places for attackers to be hidden, or to spend too much time in entrance of bars, discos or malls where drunk people always fight.
There are videos that show what happens when there's a deep cut to the outside of the forearm. Deep enough cut servers the muscle and the hand is, essentially, useless. Not like the movies.
@Богдан Паращук not true... how do you think you open your hand? If you get sliced on the outside, your fingers are going to clamp shut, and you will not be opening them without surgical intervention.

🤷♂️ ahhh thank youuu! Finally some damn common sense in the comments!
I agree!👍

It is not easy to defend using your hand while he has all the ways to attack. Better run if you can or use something in your hand and defend in one strike to get him down.
Low leg push kicks will work to create distance and exit as quickly as possible.
If there is no escape, don't wait to try and dodge the knife. Take the offense into his throat or down kick to break the knee

How?
In Shotokan, we were taught to RUN AWAY if possible, even if you were winning the fight prior to the knife being introduced. If there is nowhere to run, and you must engage, you must immediately elevate the focus of your attack to lethal or near lethal strikes only. Your goal is no longer just to knock your opponent out, or to wound him so he won't continue fighting. Your very NEXT strike has to be a death strike, unfortunately. Lastly, don't attempt a Wing Chun "trap" move, because if that doesn't work with a knife in reality. You will be dead in a few seconds.
There's no such thing as a "lethal strike" unless you're armed

The bottom line is you practice this drill for the situations where you are stuck in a close encounter with a knife. I've seen a fair share of knife fights where the person with the knife loses.

I had a martial arts teacher who is also working as a security guard in a company.

If you can jam that shit up long enough to deliver a strong counter, it could save your life. I know someone who was mugged while drunk.

That was insane sparring in the middle of the video at top speed. Bravo. 👏 well done my WC friends.

When he saw the guy was about to pull something out of his pocket, he rushed the guy then punched him with the intention of knocking him out. his opponent got pressured a bit during the scuffle but eventually was able to draw his weapon
When my brother saw that he ran but got chased so he resorted on creating distance between him and his attacker while anytime the guy lunges, he threw a jab knocking the guy back.

LMAO LOL. ! The comment of the decade!
Run, even if you leave your loved ones behind as victims....!?
The key to defending against a knife attack is to recognize the knife (if you actually intend to use a knife on someone you don't want them seeing the knife until it's too late) and control the knife hand. Of course the first knife defense is always to give them your wallet and run away as fast as you can.
As for controlling the knife hand, it is better than punched and kneed by your opponent than stabbed by him. Two on one and keep the knife pointing away from your body at all costs.
Idk if teachers do this but I think it would be a good idea to take each student one at a time say after a session and ask for them to wait for you while you get something and then just randomly attack them as you're walking up to them in mid sentence or sneak up and attack them
I would do that if I was the instructor only to those who are serious
Maybe it's better if the students email the teacher to meet them in a dark alley and the student instead waits inside the house, under the bed and when the teacher gets out of the bed, the student springs on the teacher wearing all black.
@@broluxgigantos89 also yelling SNEAK ATTAAAAAAAAAAACK
They actually do it, some instructors will just randomly try to stab and see if the students are vigilant.
Getting attacked by a knife is kind of like getting bit by a dog. You're usually bleeding before you know you're being attacked. Most dogs bite by surprise and I think most knife attackers do the same thing. I've been bit a couple of times, but not stabbed yet.
This (your comment)
is a lot closer to reality than becoming a
kungfu master overnight, or within months or years,
for the average person that faces an attack.
I believe the teacher here could survive an encounter
with a knife attacker with a tiny bit of luck, but then
again, a knife attacker doesn't thrust his knife in
slow motion.
I've been stabbed before and you're right. I thought the man punched me in the back, only when he took his third stab did I realise I was being attacked with a knife
I agree. If someone dials you in for a knife attack the first stab is not going to be seen or felt until the third one hits home.

Better now than never.
"No battle was ever won in defence" The Art Of War, Sun Tzu
The actual quote is The greatest victory is that which requires no battle. . I have won plenty of battles in self defence. Its basically what Ju jitsu is all about.
"Invincibilty lies in the defence. The possibilty of victory in the offense"
The defender has the advantage that he doesn't need to conquer the enemy to win.
Yeah, Sun Tzu never said that. Remember he literally lived in the country that built the Great Wall to defend its own people, and it worked lol. China is a juggernaut now still. The nomad tribes from the steppes, not quite.
Without a good defense you'll never have time to start the offense.
Good point. Defence is really offence. And defensive mindset will get one hurt or killed. We defend ourselves by being offensive.
If your "knife defense" involves anything but run for your life or get yourself weapon superiority - you are done
I see the comments saying you will get cut. The instructor clearly says that you will get cut in the process and he teaches how to not get cut in vital areas while you are defending.
It's a drill but would it be practical? No. Maybe with a shirt off to tie the hands up but no 90% your going to get stabbed.

Those are just the lies you tell yourself.
Best technique I've ever seen for disarming a knife is a tried and true two step technique:
Point.
Bang.
You see so much wing chun in kali, and kali in wing chun. So happy my last sifu introduced us to the art of kali, great art.
Anything that doesn't involve firearms or explosives is just an art.
This video is bs

kinda the point of the technique - unless you're talking about sneak attacks, the technique is meant for you to better gauge the speed and direction of the knife-wielding opponent.
That's not even a technique. That's just a repeating set of movements aim to better your reflexes and control.

@@TheMrCHELL give their want
Speaking from experience: You don't always see the knife before it gets you. Sometimes there is a request and upon negative response, you feel a sharp pinch in your lower back. You think you've been punched, so you turn around quickly and at that point, you feel a warm rushing sensation on your torso as you realize what just happened. It is only then do you see the blade in your attacker's hand.

True, but still better to have some training rather than no training at all. At the very least, training gives you awareness of your surroundings.
In the actual its impossible especially when u see the killer’s eye.many blackbelts have been stabbed and killed
Every time I think about knife defense I remember what I learned from Master Indiana Jones.
If you are ever in the unfortunate situation where your assailant has a knife. Use any article of clothing you can to wrap around your hand and forearm as a makeshift shield. It will decrease your chances of getting cut and allow you to be more aggressive in your defense, and counter attack.

Training knife defense is like training to be in a car crash.

Thanks for sharing new to this channel. Great work for martial community
Sports community.
Martial community is dealing with firearms.
I can confirm these 2 are right. I've yet to see someone come up with a good defense against me.
I learn from anime that you have to keep distance from the opponent and attack when they are in motion of stabbing
Nah u have to flex muscles very hard, so the knife cant even penetrate you... -_- What u said is amateur way
Never in a million years! A good fighter with a knife will beat you....
They love the show techniques like that in movies when in reality the best thing is to knock the person down pick up a baseball bat or kick the guy backwards the longer you are engaged with a person at close range the greater your chances to get hurt
Longer weapons are better weapons. A cane or walking stick is way better than a knife.
Honestly from every video I've seen the best way to protect your yourself is to keep your distance and to not be so close to someone with a blade.
Scary stuff.
Very scary.
Actually, I carry several rounds of magnum hollow point "knife defense" with me at all times.

If the knife is sharp, wouldn't getting slashed in the forearm immobilize your hand if he severs the tendons?
Truue
Getting slashed on the inside of the forearm will get your fingers immobolized, but the outside is mostly okay
at least it's far from your stomach
There are videos that show what happens when there's a deep cut to the outside of the forearm. Deep enough cut servers the muscle and the hand is, essentially, useless. Not like the movies.
@Богдан Паращук not true... how do you think you open your hand? If you get sliced on the outside, your fingers are going to clamp shut, and you will not be opening them without surgical intervention.
When your family is in danger, running is NOT an option.
