  • In this video I share the things I've learnt over the past years porting and building husqvaran 266xps.
I'll show various cylinder porting and what the porting improves and sometimes where it takes away from.
    thanks for watching!!

Nice to hear just plain common sense . :) 372's also have the SAME size 6202 bearings.. Issue I've seen is out of balance crank/piston systems eat cases too.. too heavy a piston/wrist pin relative to the crank counter weights .. watch bearing pockets oval out over time on the lighter 372 cases. XPW's and early XT's are case and point after a "loggers" life b 4 they made subtle changes to improve the "balance". Seen them with the case screws rattled loose and the bearing just drop out after splitting the cases. Something to think about, especially with the "big bore" crazed ideas. I agree compression is good to a point. I don't know about you but I try to limit to around 170-180psi. AND the squish ISN'T all about compression, it's also about pushing more gas/air mix into a place where it will burn. At .040-.050 the gas air "ring" around the squish band will not burn. Get the squish to .020 and squeeze more into the combustion "dome" where it with be productive. So get both a more "efficient" burn with a tad more compression ( thermodynamics ) and more OF it to burn by pushing some out f the space under the squish band :) THANK you for laying out some hard earned experience on those 266's BTW

You should Hone Buckin’s cylinder and throw it on another bottom end with a windowed piston to see how it will run.

Your advice about charging $$$ for saw builds is spot-on … you better be damn sure that reliable gains are delivered or folk will be throwing rocks at you. Imho unless it is a brand new saw OR the guy or gal springs for a full oem rebuild (expensive) it’s not worth it! You could build 99 excellent runners and that 1 of 100 could put you and your rep in the toilet 🚽 … That being said therefore are plenty of Ol school builders available

Airflow is the thing I think, (engineering) and you come from a unique point of view. The HD background probably gave you some more worthwhile insight.....😁😁😁

More AIR thru the motor is the most reliable way to gain performance , exhaust is huge , even employing the same stock cylinder- get the “flow” correct and you might be pleasantly surprised… no grinding/machining need 🤩

Very very informative. Might attempt some light porting in the future. But for the cutting I do most of the time stock is sufficient but to have a saw that is sippy and responsive that starts, runs and cuts all day every day is my desire. Reliability is key to me. Thanks for sharing, this was spot on for my 266 build coming up in my shop. TC Mahalo Tinman 🤙🤙🤙

This is the stuff I like , a man telling his viewers to get in there and do it . I bet a lot of people will give it a try now with the words of encouragement. Like you said start out with some light lower transfer work a base gasket delete and a muffler mod and your saw will
Wake right up. We call a base gasket delete the poor man’s port job lol. Snowmobile drag racing is pretty big where I live hope to get into porting someday on the bigger stuff .

Late to watch, but this is a really really good video.
I figured there had to be a set of general "rules" about how certain changes usually effect the position of a motors' powerband but have never seen/heard anyone talk about what they are.
This video will be a HUGE help in planning my future porting.
    Thanks Tinman.
    Time for a second watch.

Tinman catching up on videos, just returned from the Bunyan event. What a privilege it was to just hold that saw and here it thunder. Buckin would have let me run it but having some back trouble and was not able. The difference on video and watching it live,no comparison to here that raw power. Good build my friend 👍♥️

Man this is perfect! A lot of really great tips for my 266 build. Timed my brothers 1983 266SG to I: 69, E: 104, T: 124, Squish 1mm/0.050" with base gasket on a OEM Mahle cylinder. 0.53mm/0.022" w/o base gasket and +1° timing. Old style with the D shaped intake and the 163A carb. Probably going to need some more grinding on the intake than I thought originally, thanks a lot 🙏

Not gonna lie that im very nervous about it tho Got me a sthil 066 not long ago with a 28” bar so i can try and stand up and buck in hopes my back will cooperate. Even found a bigbore high comp kit that id like to try and just see what happends with the power. Thanks for taking us along the ride ans sharing your experince Sir

i wonder if u can mix E-85 with 2 cycle oil and just give it all the timing, like tuning a car u can typically run more timing with e85 vs 93gas. i know the ethanol is not great for small engines but just sound like a neat experiment . hey im just trying to let her eat 😊😊 i really enjoy the vids u make tinman u seem like a great guy to sit and have a beverage with and just chew the fat around the fire. cheers my friend hope u and the family had a great weekend

Hey man! I love to watch your videos. I have a little Suzuki LT50 atv. After MANY years of service, the stock cylinder was replaced by a new Chinese knock off. It runs but seems to be a dog compared to before. It has good compression but seems to have very little vacuum at the carb. Do you think it’s possible that the port timing in the aftermarket cylinder is “off”?

Why do Husqvarna cylinders have those cylinder “centering” lips (I don’t know what to call them) but Stihl doesn’t? I’ve never figured out why. Can’t they be TOTALLY removed instead of just some?

    • @WildAcresFarms
      @WildAcresFarms ปีที่แล้ว

Anything you can leave intact to decrease the crankcase volume is a good thing. More charge velocity, and snappier throttle response.
