I'm sad they never considered a 4 player doubles mode for the game, it would have made for a great party game.

The original Windjammers was always my coveted game growing up. It was only on Neo Geo and it was SO much fun when I played it at a video game store. I am shocked they finally made a sequel. Gonna have to check this out on Game Pass.
Your not missing anything trust me, just stick with the first game. If anything the difficulty feels more cheap

both my wife and I were *hooked* on the steam beta when it happened last year (she tried to get on the PS4 one but never got in a single match) so suffice it to say I was ready to download it on switch day one!
I'm with you on the lack of tutorial being a huge downside. As someone who never played the first game, my first hour or two with this game was pretty confusing. I mean, I get the goal (obviously), but the controls are... not exactly intuitive, even for someone like me who has played quite a few tennis games (the closest thing to this, from what I can tell). The still images that "explain" the controls often list multiple button combos, with no explanation. Am I supposed to hit all of those combos in succession to pull off the move? Or any one of those combos? And for that matter, what do half of those moves even mean or do? It's all... very, very confusing.
That said, I feel like a few more hours might give me a better feel for which buttons do what, and in which contexts. It's frustrating to have to put in several hours just to figure out what should have been explained in a five minute tutorial from the start, but... oh well. At least there's a solid game underneath. Unlockables would have been nice - I'm someone who loves even just cosmetics to work towards getting in a game - but in the end the actual competitive play is what I bought the game for, and that part is definitely solid.
Gosh, such a lovely review! And It's so sad that there is no regional prices on Eshop Russia, but definitely in my wishlist now
It will be fun to see "vs" matches on EVO.
As a windjammers fan its worth it alone just to have players online right now for however long that lasts. I've been having a blast. Getting better! I hope to throw an in person tournament in my city this year

The lack of extra modes and unlockables is a legitimate downside, considering how much extra time this game had to stew.
I do think that the gameplay loop itself is improved from the original, for sure.
But if that's ALL there is to do here...
$20 is a bit too steep.
I think $15 would be a more acceptable price.
And MAYBE DotEmu can add some extra post-launch content and put some meat on this game's bones.
I don't know how anyone could be upset at the new artstyle - The hand-drawn animations and overall style just feels aesthetically pleasing

I love the gameplay, but it really needs extra modes like the minigames being separate from the story mode, more minigames, a season mode and extra unlocks like characters or new outfit colors. Hopefully, Dotemu will keep adding content to make it even better. It could easily be a 10/10 game for me.
When you combine a sports game with fighting game lol looks cool.
Or it's a combination of PONG & King of Fighters.
With pong though you can't catch the ball, just bounce it off this game you can catch it and redirect the frisbee in a few different ways a la similar to tennis as to why I said sports game and FG. Either way fun game.
Looks cool, reminds me of Lethal League.
Funny because Lethal League always reminded me vaguely of the original Windjammers lol

You control the dog in the fetching minigame btw.
My only issue with the game is that it isn’t very accessible to newcomers. Not only is there no dedicated tutorial mode to teach you the ins and outs of the game, but the arcade ai is way too brutal. And the limited continues in arcade mode is a backwards design decision, why on earth would they think that was a good idea.
To add some challenge and punishment for losing. IMO they could've achieved the same effect with a time attack system but limited lives also works.
@@ToxicGlamour it just feels like an antiquated design decision. They probably added it to make the arcade mode seem longer than it actually is.

yes, heaven forbid an arcade mode in the sequel to a much loved arcade game feel too "arcade-y"

Everyone pooping on this game has clearly never played windjammers lol. This is one of the greatest competitively addictive legends of all time and I'm glad after 28 years Dotemu's put in the work to bring back this hidden gem
The Nostalgia is high here, used to be one my fave arcade games. I have to play it every time I visited my old arcade store.
Pizza place by house & highschool had a Neo geo with metal slug, windjammers, last resort, and one of the fighting games can't remember, and 2 other games. I always played the first two. They were so popular that they had to limit customers to those actually buying a slice or whole pie. The coin slot would overflow once a month

Online is surprisingly solid on switch. Though not many people playing. I'd imagine most of the playerbase is on PC.
It's absolutely worth it despite it seems the developers left the online mode dead. Never was any other fighting title I loved this much.
Never played WJ1 and gotta say this game slaps
Disappointed that as far as I can tell, there's no multi-Switch local multiplayer like the first Windjammers has on Switch. I like playing head to head both in handheld, so I miss it a lot.

I’m new to windjammers and learning the game too me took less than 2 hours. It’s extremely fun. But I feel as if I need a better controller when playing because the joycons kinda hold me back with the analog stick part.
GameCube controller works great. j recommend the pdp fight pad

I really like the game but the lack of a tutorial combined with the ai not being terrible even at easy difficulty is a problem. Newbies can get frustrated pretty fast. I have 0 points ranked and am at Rank 4000 something. I have never seen more than 20 people online. The ratio #buyers/#peopleonline is pretty weird. It can be a region thing. I don't know.

When I was a kid some asshole at gamestop sold me a copy of the ps2 original new for $20!!! it should have been like $2.50 used!

clearly a paid-for review. I've just played this on game pass and it's a pile of garbage! Tried it on easy and the AI just goes mental, scores with pretty much every shot and concedes nothing. Don't lie in your reviews for easy money. Have a bit of integrity and review games on their actual quality, not on how much a dev pays you for it!

If I can't take watching the first 2 minutes of a review, I don't think this game for me.
I need to do a review on this. It's the same game as the old one, just feels more unfair on the difficulty side. No story no new modes just stick with the first game. This game is a let down really, definitely not a bad game by any means but they didn't improve anything. There, I just saved you from even watching this video

What do you mean? Plenty of people loved the first game and were craving for a sequel. Plus, this doesn't look crappy at all. What games do you ask for, oh great judge if what games are crappy and which aren't?
That's what I thought, until I played the first Windjammers. There's a surprising amount of strategy involved with being good at the game and it's a blast to play against friends, in-person. Try it.
