The M103 in War Thunder is the last Heavy Tank in the US Tech Tree. Because this tank sits at 7.7 a whole host of lightning fast light tanks and MBT's with HEAT-FS and event APFDS have entered the chat. Not so much a heavy tank anymore and more of a giant cannon meme, the M103 is pretty ridiculous.
With a shell weighing 23kg and with a muzzle velocity of 1000m/s+ that makes this Solid AP the highest energy solid AP in the game. Some APCBC may be heavier, but that doesn't mean they're solid. The M103 suffers like all solid AP slingers do by having pretty miserable post penetrating damage. So, whatever size the shell is... it will leave behind some or most of the enemy tanks crew members in tact.
Despite this, it's still funny to hurl gigantic steel slugs at people from across the map and for some reason it does give some spectacular ammo racks! :)

And again it’s a teammate in a T92 that helps Odd to hold the line. Remember back to that one video some months back where a T92 was helping and got taken out by a Panther (if I recall?) that was trying to push Odd while he was repairing? In my book T92 players are starting to set a gold standard for good teammates.

The reasons for the turret layout are to give the commander the ability to operate a "Hunter Killer" system, the British did the same thing with the Conqueror, the panel on Operation Think Tank a few years ago talked about it. Also we're missing the M103A1 with the upgraded engine, but Gaijin only cares about T-80XYZ premiums these days.

M103A2 had the upgraded AVDS diesel engine, but I completely agree with you. I would LOVE to see the M103A2 at 8.3-8.7 with better maneuverability, a better range finder, better turret traverse, etc. As well as the option to use APDS since the M103's gun did fire APDS, but the US army chose solid shot over it for some reason.
Honestly, MBTs are basically just speedy heavy tanks.
Like the Abrams is heavier than the M103.
They didn't stop making heavies, they just figured out how to replace all the other tanks with faster heavies.

Nah, MBT isn't a mechanical classification, it's a doctrinal one. A main battle tank is the main tank you use in battle.
The US just decided that it's main tank should be a chonker.
MBTs are a combination of everything from light to super heavy, so technically MBTs like that abrams could also be heavily armored light tanks.

Though it would be immensely satisfying to see the side of a locust caved in and moved 10 meters in the other direction by something like this.
I would like this thing a lot more if Gaijin fixed how uncapped armor piercing shells performed against sloped armor. Especially the M103's AP in particular. The nose of the shell was designed to shatter in such a way that turned the main body of the penetrator in towards the plate offering exceptional angled performance. In game it both lacks in angled penetration and had an ahistorically high chance to bounce at even moderate angles. In real life testing the gun that would be mounted upon the M103 proved that it could penetrate an RHA mock-up of an IS-3 hull at a range of 1.5km reliably. In game that shot is unreliable even at point blank. Same reason why the M26's T33 AP shot performs so ahistorically poorly against the Panther. It should pen the upper glacis reliably out to 1km but it can't even do so at point blank in game. The reason is that Gaijin's penetration calculator just flat out poorly represents uncapped penetrators. T33 AP is also incorrectly modeled as APC when in reality it was APBC.
which is crazy because a tank that was fitted with a 90mm gun specifically designed to penetrate Panther's and proved in actual combat that it could do what it was designed to do, but in War Thunder you can UFP a Panther is honestly INSANE to me.
One post WWII US tank I want to see in the game is the T42 medium tank, which is a new hull design with a early design for the M47 Patton turret.
I'd be down for that.

I hate how bad the 120mm solid shot is in game, it's lacking alot of 60° pen and the ricochet chance is way too high that a Panther with some luck can ricochet it all day long ground level...
Gaijin has secret modifiers at over 60 degrees to go with other arbitrary nerfs to buff the snooZers and barrel depress what they see as NATO.
The most suspicious part of that particular line of code is the average slope of Soviet tanks factoring into the decision. Really crappy petty BS.
This shot in particular should be Zeusing the front of Tiger 2's and IS-3's.
I'm still amazed that Gaijin has still not added the WZ-111 heavy tank for China.

Yeah, the M103 AP shell is such a huge let down in my opinion.
This shell should have more angled pen than the APDS of the Conqueror, and it should do even more damage. The M103 had the most powerful gun of any tank that entered service, but in War Thunder this gun is mediocre.
Foch and Amx 50 120 solid shot is crazy too

I just think this video does a perfect job of displaying what it wrong with heavy tanks in WT. The way BR works just makes heavy tanks like any other tank just fatter and slower than any other tank. They’re supposed to be “heavy” but still die from little tanks that don’t even need to out flank or maneuver. 😔 Poor heavies.

Gaijin has gone out of its way to pull relative historical competition with all its modeling, to sell their mud puddle of ww2 vs brand new clown wigs.
Don't even bring up the IS-6, because they were caught adding invisible armor to that. A lot of Soviet garbage is treated like that, unbalancing the game as artificially as possible.
Seen this vehicle in person, its actually suprisingly small for a heavy tank of its weight. Most of its length comes from the gun.
I remember climbing into one of these M103 tanks when i was a kid at the base and they had one in a park along with a M60 near where I live that honored military and tank crews. The tank was awesome to dee inside and climb on top of. It had the T52 stereo sight and the M14 computer and the M60 power unit the Continental diesel engine.

Solid shot just does not work in War Thunder unless you can get ALL of the crew at the same time.
It either works or doesn't earlier I decided to work on my French line and I had some good games in the amx 100 had 9 kills and 1 death then next game nothing but 6 assist and I was dealing with a annoying ahh t44 100 that I shot straight into his turret to disable some shii wasn't enough I killed like just the commander and gunner then I caught this guy 2 more times direct side hull shots couldn't have asked for a better shot and mofo still lives it was ridiculous and by that time my reload started so I was fcked and out numbered and eventually died due to reloading 💀
ARL-44 90mm is the only normal Solid shot that feels like APHE lol. It just murders tanks.
It works perfectly, it's only the US ones that are wonky for some reason. With British and French tanks, it gives pretty good damage as long as you point it towards more vital parts.

The shot that the zsu 57 pulled of is what i use to kill the m103 with aphe, it pens pretty reliably on guns like long 88

Hey Odd, the F3D has air brakes, so you dive bomb a lot slower without having to lawn dart the ground. Then as you pull up, nail the throttle and put the flaps away and you're out of there safely and at speed.
I've been asking this quite a bit, but you should definetely give the Strv m/42 EH a try! That thing is a great medium tank, it's mobile, it has a 75mm APHE shell that - with more HE filler than an IS-2 - evaporates anything, it has enough armor to bounce some shots... It's awesome, and together with the B-239 and the mad max AA truck makes for a really strong lineup!

One of my coolest kills was a snapshot on an M103 with a Panther II on its cupola.
Also used a Panther A to kill an IS-6 at its most OP point with a hail Mary shot on it's lowest most side armor from 2k away
I’ve always found the m103 to have a weird turret that still makes sense. Having the gunner and commander at the back means that they have no sight (that is mounted on the gun itself) and instead would range the targets with the rangefinder, and then elevate the gun accordingly. It also means that the 2 loaders had a lot of space, since the entire turret basket is only occupied by them.
patient zero for the point-and-click gameplay that has reigned ever since.

23:15 u can penetrate almost any tank trough the most front wheel; and it does not even detonates HEAT till it reaches the side plate it self, like the wheel does not have a hitbox from some angles. Its an old ancient bug, or simply overlooked broken mechanism, it has nothing to do with Russian ammo.
He also has cool ears that anything can fly into
M103 is a lot of fun especially with it often getting downteired it’s armor is hard to deal with since people are often unsure although when u occasionally run into somebody with a good knowledge the can pen quite a few spots frontally with next to no pen for main guns
I had a Heavy tank battle between the T10M vs this one. I just used apds to his lower plate and won.
that T92 in the first game was stock with 200mm pen APCR btw. it explains why he was passive.
also you should bring some HE in the M103 because it can overpressure IS-3s and Conquerors on the turret roof
APCR as only stock shell should be criminal considering how bad it performs, especially at a BR where every nation has started to use slanted armor

at 6.7 it has stock APCR, just like the german Bulldog at 6.3.
What is funny is that the normal US bulldog starts with solidshot, which is much better, but those other 2 don't even have it.
Both the T92 and the german Bulldog has the next shell at rank 3! yes, you have to research 3 ranks to even get APDS, which is just slightly better than APCR...

@@MADDOGmjb Technically yes, however overpressure is not as reliable when using HEAT over HE. Additionally, the HEAT-FS has only 2.6kg TNT equivalent compared to 4.6kg for the HE
This thing has an incredible HEAT round. I find that I one-shot most tanks with it.
Definitely worth making it your primary, with the Solid shot for shooting through stuff

so this is basically the Surbaissée's gun on a less mobile vehicle and without the autoloader

Actually first map is really ideal for M103 bcs you can fight at hulldown position and just show your very thich turret armor in like every place in the map.

Did you know the AMX-50 Foch has the AP round with the least amount of drop in game. It acts like a apfsds round. Also OddBawz not sure if your knew but you can pen the IS-3s frontally with the AP rounds with no problem up to 800 meters(Ive done it before)

The worst part about the M103 is how nerfed it really is, it’s like the American introduction to the entire UK tech tree lol, big rounds, long reload times and no damage done.
Fun fact the force generated by the M103’s shell hitting armour I believe is still the highest caused by a tank even today. So technically even if the shell didn’t penetrate you’d still kill someone in the tank, as for light tanks you’d flip them.

I almost never use the HEAT in this. In the cases where you need it the target is resistant to it. The onky real targets to shoot with heat are the T10M IS4M and IS3 because it's armour overperforms to a ridiculous degree ingame.
But it is also laughable how much worse that M103 is when compared to the T10M and IS4M
I hated using this vehicle. My barrel was constantly destroyed. I had to remove all upgrades because the repair cost was insane before the economy changes. I preferred the Super Pershing, but it used to cost 14,500 sl to repair. M103 was like 8,500 to repair. Other nations were way cheaper.

Tbh with the M103, i prefer just using the HEATFS. Its far more consisent pen wise in my experience even if the penetration is more anemic than the solid shots. Plus with how many light stuff there is at 7.7 fhe HEATFS is even better
I'm surprised you loaded HEATFS for IS-3s, it's possible to punch through their turret face with Tiger II, so this thing should have an even easier time of it.
