“Something is Killing the Children” is my favorite comic and James Tynion IV is my favorite writer. “The Department of Truth” and “The Nice House on the Lake” are two other standout titles from him. There are two things I’d add about SiKtC. I’m not sure if it’s because the deaths often feature children or because of the violence associated but I always find them highly impactful. Also, for a character that does not have any true superpowers (aside from being able to see the monsters, which I don’t count), Erica Slaughter is a natural born BADASS which is seen throughout issues 1-15 and supported in her origin story throughout issues 16-20…and I love women who kick ass!
On that last note of women who kick ass, its such a breath of fresh air since unlike a lot of recent attempts, they dont just try shove down your throst how cool and enpwered she is as an attempt to pander; they simply show her being an absolutely badass.
I have openly not been a fan of Tynion because I didn’t care for Department of Truth, or Tynions Batman run, but Something is Killing the Children is phenomenal.
@@eldenlean5221 I also love how reasonable and compassionate Erica is in her motives. I thought she would be downright cold and uncaring, but the way that she is the complete opposite of those mentioned traits is such a breath of fresh air.
Good luck Chris, you deserve a huge following, your content is always excellent. This comic is an excellent example of the importance of good writer-artist collaboration to really elevate the meaterial. The artist's idea of the pattern on the bandana and the defferent colors was inspired. I love to learn details like this.
Congratulations on taking that big leap doing what you love. I had a similar situation in my career and know how scary it is to give up benefits. The content you provide is amazing and I am heading patreon to support you. Looking forward to more content on the channel.
It was your recommendation that got me reading this book Chris and I'm very glad I picked it up. It manages to squeeze in so many layers of creepiness, as well as a tight plot and some great characterisation. The art really serves the tone as well. Strongly recommended.
Hi Chris, been watching your videos for about the past year (trying to get “caught up”, usually I just go from oldest to newest, but when you put out a fresh one that catches my eye I can’t help watch it right away). I’ve been picking up SIKTC in single monthly issues since it first came out, as I do with many indie titles, but often I read the first ish, then wait till I’ve got a stack of em to really dig in. This title is one I enjoy so much I do read it monthly, and can say I really enjoy it that way, and don’t feel like I need to go back an re-read last months issue to get refreshed, although I do agree it’s a slow burn. Good luck with upping the number of videos - your comic reviews are very well put together, with lots of detail towards research and making it entertaining (and funny !) at the forefront.
I’ve been watching ComicTropes for about 2 years now, and I have to say that the more cynical sense of humor you’ve brought to the newer episodes is just absolutely wonderful. As someone who thinks VPNs are over advertised as well as advertised to too general an audience, the VPN joke got me this week and last. Keep it up! You rock!
Glad to hear that you're working part-time to give your channel more time ! That's super exciting news! Congrats! A big step and can be nerve wracking for sure, but your work is great and your audience will only continue to grow. Your enthusiasm and humour is on full display with these latest videos. Great stuff!
You're easily my favorite comic books TH-cam content creator. You're knowledgeable, fun and wholesome and what I appreciate most is that you're not following trends on what's popular to drive views, you're trying to bring attention to "lesser" known books instead of just Marvel and DC. Keep up the great work Chris.
I found this title after it was recommended in a previous video. It's not often that I read something and it gives me chills, but this did. I actually liked how they didnt make the local law enforcement incompetent, just grasping at straws and eventually doing what ever they needed to get the job done. They seemed as competent as any one facing invisible monsters would be.
Wow, almost 150k subscribers. Things are finally starting to pay off for you! I've never read a comic book in my life but I've been kind of a regular here. You just know how to make cool fiction even more intriguing! I still like the old theme song more, though. ;)
Weekly!!!? Hell yeah! Stoked to see more of ya. Probably scary as hell, but I know I’m super excited for you. All the best loves and hopes to you in this endeavor. If you ever need anything from us, your audience, don’t be afraid to ask. We are here to support you.
chris im really happy youve found another book you enjoy and that you made a video on so more people can experience the story im really excited to pick up a copy and you have my gratitude for recommending it
Man you totally got me with those segways. I literally put my beer down to swing the mouse for a fast forward. Then picked it back up. Then felt like a fool for picking it back up going back to it. Man that was supreme genius Grodd level. Cheers man.
Agreed, the series slowed down and dragged on. Once they got out of Archers Peak in issue 16 it picked up again. But overall I’ve really enjoyed the series.
This is one of my favorite ongoing comics. Erica is so damn cool. The first issue of House of Slaughter was really intriguing too, so I can't wait to see where it's going.
Thanks so much for another great and informative video Chris! I've was on the fence about this title and now I know I'll definitely be getting the graphic novels.
Followed your channel almost from the beginning and happy to hear you are able to focus more on it. You make great quality content man - so don't worry :-)
Always loving the content and as a quality of life comment Thank you for never having static images. The slight animations let my chromecast stream it without constantly dropping audio.
That's awesome news that you're going to be going down to part-time at your day job and putting out your videos more often!! I watch most of your review and trope videos when they are released. Your content is great, so it makes me really happy to know that you're able to do it more with less need for a 'regular' job/income. You've earned it!
Just found your channel. Such amazing stuff! I love this series and only started pulling monthly for the current arc. I agree, it does read better in trade. I enjoy the process though. One thing I especially love is the layouts they use combined with the lettering. My eyes flow so naturally across each page, especially the big splashes. Cheers!
I really like this series, it reminds me of a lesser-known vertigo title, Imaginary Fiends, by Seely which was one of my favorites. Another horror book I'd like to see you cover is Bunnymask, by Paul Tobin, published by Aftershock.
I'm on-and-off with the artwork. I love the looser, hatchworked stuff. Not so much the more rigid drawings, particularly of faces. Really great, instructive comments about writing techniques.
I got into this title earlier this summer and bought it just off of the name alone and never heard anything prior about it. Now I'm hooked and even own a House of Slaughter/ Order of St. George Black Mask, that I rock every time I go out. If there was ever a time to wear it in public, now is the perfect time. Love the story and definitely have a feeling its going to be a tv series real soon.
@@sarkastikleader4708 Plus it's being developed by Mike Flanagan, the guy behind The Haunting of Hill House, which is a perfect fit if there ever was one!
Chris, all the best on the frequency and new format on the second channel! I've been enjoying your channel for a while now and it always seems to get better, keep up the great work! 👍
Just discovered your channel and subscribed. Superb overview of Something is killing the children, definitely made me interested in giving this a try. Well done Sir!
Great Video Your coverage of Something is Killing the Children got me into the book. Bought the 3 available volumes and started collecting other works by the author like his recent Batman run, The Woods, and Dept of Truth. Thanks again for sharing good comics.
Love those 'review' videos but miss the ones about actual tropes and zany challenges :) Good to know you'll be doing this more regularly. If looking for sponsorship try the usual suspects: seems VPN ones are always looking for videos to sponsor but there's also anything else from grooming kits like Manscape to underwear like Max Weldon(?) and Sheat (they sponsor Toy Galaxy). Good luck :)
just saw this for the first time. I started buying Something is killing the children with issue 25 but now have all the cover A's back to issue 7 haven't been able to afford the rest yet, but from first seeing a breakdown for the first story arch I was hooked.
This looks very cool. It's the sort of artwork I wanted for The Crow (I saw that movie first and expected the comic to look different to how it does look).
One of my favorite monthly titles. I totally agree about the pacing being better suited to a trade paperback, rather than a monthly title. Plus, the secondary market has ensured that it would be ridiculous to try to collect this title in singles, it would cost a mammoth amount of money to get first print singles lol. I love the artists involved, it just fits the story perfectly. Great video btw, thanks
Great video Chris, and congratulations for your "new" career! It takes balls and you definitely have the quality of your work on your side. About the horror comics recommendations: this past month I've been reading an ungodly amount of horror books and some of my favorites come from Vault: I loved reading The Plot, The Autumnal, Black Stars Above, Shadow Service and These Savage Shores. Also Killadelphia which is possibly the best indie book going around. I'm also glad that horror is getting a big push from DC again, between the Hill House books (Basketful of Heads, The Low Low Woods and Plunge especially) and their mainstream books like Swamp Thing (which is amazing). They just created the DC Horror inprint too. Oh, and there is the also the horror machine that is Cullen Bunn! His horror themed books with Valiant are great and I've been reading a lot of his c.o. work: beside the obvious Harrow County I also loved The Empty Man, Bone Parish, Blood Feud and The Unsound and Dark Ark, which I both somehow missed when they came out. The stuff he is putting out currently is also amazing (The Last Book You'll ever Read, Lucky Devil, Parasomnia & Basilisk)
Lol you are killing me lately love your edits and jokes .. FYI I was wondering who will cover this book ( I f-ing love it) no surprise your one of the first I see talking about this book! Much love and Aloha from Hawaii!
This is my favorite comic series. I can read it over and over and it's always amazing. The art is so expressive. The characters are so interesting. It's just awesome. And I don't mind a slow-ish burn. I'd love to see you do a video on Department of Truth, and compare it with the origins of monsters in this book. Two great books with a very similar origin of the weirdness.
