      same here, I liked/agreed with her for first few months she was on beyond and other shows but I quickly realized she is down on so many things. • @TheRiksta7
      @TheRiksta7 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I agree. IGN is a great review outlet, however I find her reviews too subjective rather than taking a step back and appreciating what a game is trying to do. If a particular mechanic isn't for her then that's fine, but it seems she just disproportionately critiques things on games and comes across she doesn't enjoy playing games generally.

    • @Gameonysus
      @Gameonysus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I honestly have always been this critical. I think guide writing does impact me though but only in that it amplifies the good and the bad. We spend more time looking at these worlds than most players and literally transcribe entire games in the form of direction sets. I think guides writers have a lot to bring to the table but clearly you disagree. Oh well. Hope you liked the episode anyway!

    • @ZeroHayabusa
      @ZeroHayabusa 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Gameonysus Genuine question: Yes guide writers have to look at all of the world but do you think they have time to really soak in the atmosphere and really explore when they're beelining act 2 and 3? To be clear your criticisms are valid and everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I think for a lot of people it's tough to hear criticism from someone who seemingly didn't give the game a fair shot from the onset (not saying that's what you did but it can come across that way in this video). I'm probably going to love this game regardless since it's a dream game for me so it's all good.

I just said I can see why people might get frustrated with this specific discussion in particular. Like I said I'm probably going to love this game and hearing someone who isn't in love with the game's opinion won't affect me at all so it's all good.

    “I actually just want to finish this game”. Typically uttered by no one when they’re really enjoying a game. More useful for someone who makes guides to to just finish a game. I think that’s a slippery slope when you’re there to review a game you like or don’t. Just something I was thinking.

    • @NeonLeonNoel

      @UserInterface00 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fair enough to have her opinion, but I’m the opposite though. I loved TLOU, however, the TLOU2 was a slog to get through. Nothing really new from the previous game. Combat was literally the same and only one or two new infected. The game is basically cutscene/dialogue/sandbox fight area & explore for items rinse and repeat. I didn’t have a problem with the story or themes used in the game, but the game was too long. Abby’s scenes could have been trimmed. The pacing was bad, but when it came to Santa Barbara (it was my favorite area in the game) that’s where the game really shined. Also it was too dark and dreary for most of the scenes. 7.5/10.
      As for Ghosts of Tsushima. I wasn’t planning on getting it since the battle system look redundant. I’m 25+hrs in and I can’t get enough of it. Game is gorgeous and fun.
      Like movies, books, TV shows etc, games are subjective. Different strokes for different folks. Overall most gamers (non media) preferred Ghost of Tsushima over TLOU2.

    WTF is he talking about at 15:50? I'm pretty sure Horizon doesn't scale its enemies. A Thunderjaw won't be any different in the beginning of the game than the end of the game. You will be different as you don't have any badass weapons or the skill that you get by leveling up, but everything else is the same. The real problem is when enemies vary by level and are tougher at higher levels. I've been playing AC Origins recently have been extremely annoyed by enemies in certain areas being impossible to kill early and basically one shot me. If anything, Horizon is a example of how to properly handle levels in an open world game.

    No offense, but I hate hearing a wiki persons opinion on a video game. Of course they’re not going to enjoy the game, they’re having to find every detail in the game, in a timely matter, while at the same time documenting it all to put into a guide. You’re constantly being pulled out of the experience and aren’t playing it how it’s intended to be played. I’m trying to platinum this game, but I get to do it at my own pace, and and not for work. I like getting different opinions and perspectives on a game, but Janet’s gripes with it I see as reasons she didn’t like it because she was doing the wiki.

      Gameonysus to say the side missions were subpar is ridiculous and unfounded in itself since you didn’t clarify, delineate, and explain why that’s the case. In fact GoT actually modeled a lot of their side tales (quests) on the structure and form of the Witcher 3. Its super clear they emulated them from the investigations you conduct inside of the tales to the way they generally played out. I would it’s actually the strongest part of the game! One of my favorite is when you pick up a quest from Umugi Cove regarding a woman who is looking for a daughter only to find her captive and imprisoned. You find out bandits kidnapped her so she can be used in their scheme to Robb people. There many elaborate stories that goes into the deep and rich world of Tsushima. For a Non-RPG and straight up action-adventure game it’s very rich with meaningful and insight stories that colors the world and it’s characters. I strongly disagree with you in your opinion and views on the side stories but hey, it’s your opinion right. I may not love or enjoy the games you like as well. I know you’re a fan of BoW. In many ways it’s my cup of tea and there’s a number of things about it that puts a bad taste in my mouth.

    The thing he says about stealth is so true about so many stealth games that needs to change. What the AI has to do in the in between moments of spotted and hidden needs to change. The Last of Us 2 does stealth well with how they react and change their tactics, it creates these interesting spots where you have to be opportunistic and think on the fly and adjust. I think stealth games that are going for more realistic gameplay need to create more phases of behavior for AI.
    Untitled Goose Game is kind of a stealth puzzle game, but for me it kind of had an interesting flow of what of being experimental and how you flow in and out of stealth, but that premise is a bit too unique to carry over into stealth games where you kill targets instead of just do objectives and cause havoc around enemies.

    The lack of Japanese lip sync is a massive disappointment and makes me wonder whether to play in English. With how much effort Sucker Punch have put into authenticity of what inspired them, it’s undone by this decision. They should have prioritised Japanese performance capture then given the option of an English dub.

    • @Hellsing7747
      @Hellsing7747 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And then the English dubs would've had the same problem... I think they were right to prioritize the English performance because the vast majority of people will play the game in English . Also, the company is an American company. Most of the people working on the game and the writers of the game are English speakers or have knowledge of English. That would've been a lot different if most writers were Japanese. So I understand your disappointment but It makes sense why the Original Version is in English.

I understand why SP have done it this way, but I feel it was still the wrong decision. Majority of the people who work in the industry love video games. They are one of the few blessed people to be able to work in an industry that they love. Comparing a person working at IGN to a dude working at a register at target shows the lack of awareness or just tone deaf of why people doesnt think you did a good job at reviewing this game. And yes I know you not the actual reviewer for IGN but when you on a podcast like this you are all reviewing this game currently. So you saying that it doesnt matter if you enjoy the work you do as long as you able go do it an its fine? Reviewing games and giving guides to a game is hard, not saying it isnt but to say that its ok to do a guide to a type of game that you dont really enjoy is ok is not right. Im not saying that i know how IGN or other game media do their job curating but I just find it weird to have someone who doesnt have the passion for a certain type of game to do a guide for it. Thousands of people will look up for these guides for help and most will assumed those people who give out guides and tips actually give a shit about the game instead of just as a "job". I wouldnt want to try a nice meal from a chef who doesnt like cooking or doesnt put their hearts and soul into the food. Maybe you do enjoy video games but not these type of games. If you hate video games and you actually work for IGN, that to me will make alot of fans upset because thousands of gamers would die to work for a gaming media like IGN but because ign only hired people they know is hard to get in. If they found out someone who doesnt care for video games but only get the job cus of connection and just for a pay check, im sure they will be upset

      @@epicwolf @epicwolf 1. I absolutely love games. It's why I do this job. I make that comparison to point out how ridiculous it is to me that someone could not understand why I would work on a guide for a game I didn't love.
      2. "blessed people" look, I love what I do and I am thankful to be in my position but I think ppl have really warped views of the fact that my job is a job. It's one I bust my ass for and worked hard to get. I didn't win a raffle here.
      3. I just disagree. A podcast is not a review. I did not sign up to review Ghost nor would I ever bc I am not an expert in the genre. I'm just here as someone who played the game to share my insights. I actually kinda like that I didn't have the same opinion or background bc that can be helpful to some players.
      4. I also disagree with the "it's not okay to do a guide if you didn't enjoy the game" by that logic I should stop doing my job whenever I didn't like a game. Sometimes it's impossible to tell if you'll like a game and giving up bc I wasn't have fun would make me a really bad employee and teammate. On that note I am happy to answer questions on how we go about doing guides. Our core team consists of 3 staff members including myself. We get lots of video support from others and we have a great team of freelancers. In this case I was 1 of 4 ppl working on it. Ghost is the biggest game out rn. I can't say "hey boss, I think this game is good but I don't love it. I will no longer be working on this guide. My part will not be done. Goodbye." I hope that gives some context!
      5. People looking at game help want the answers. I don't think the fact that I didn't have fun finding a hot spring means my info on where the hot spring is is now bad information.
      6. Lastly, again. I love games. I loved TLOU 2. I spoke fondly of my time with Watch Dogs Legion. I enjoyed Dreams. I've loved a lot of games this year. I just didn't love ghost and idt that should be so upsetting AND I actually really like being open about the games i dislike that I play for work. Too many people romanticize this job and it turns them into angry mobs online who call us "ungrateful" or "fake." I love working at IGN but I would really love if people respected the work it takes and realize the job is a lot more than "loving games." I will keep driving that point home until the end of time bc I think it's so important and so misunderstood.

    Guys, am I wrong in petitioning Janet to be Beyond host? Anyone but Jonathan should be fine

      Yeah... I’m just fed up with current host... I love Beyond but cause of him, just skipping shows after 5-10 mins

      I’m glad you like me but I love what Dorno has done with the show. He puts in a lot of work to get dev interviews and do pick up episodes and add new segments.

      They gave it a 9. How did you come to such a dramatically different conclusion?

      @@DarkSalvation22 30FPS 1st party, so half the value down to $30 then because "you've played this before" dropped another $10. Therefore, save to play once $20.

      @@MrX-nh4zl First Party is inherently bad to you? Maybe my understanding of what first party implies, but to me that's never been a detracting factor. 30 FPS is disappointing, but not something I can't accept
