- Nick discusses his upbringing by loving parents and the anxiety he sometimes experienced both in childhood and adulthood. He touches on some sexual abuse he experienced and considers the possible impact this had upon the way he felt and possibly feels about himself now. Nick talks confidently about his innate sensitivity and of experiencing a common fear of judgment and humility, which men often struggle to open up about.
Nick describes using drugs initially to fit in with his peers, and the rapid transition from cannabis smoking to heroin use and eventually crack cocaine addiction.
Nick details his struggle to maintain employment in the face of his increasing drug use and the stress of intermittent detoxes.
Nick talks about the support he received from his family throughout his addiction and the toll his drug use and drug-related behaviour took on them.
Nick articulates the hopelessness and despair he felt in addiction and how his second residential rehab paved the way to recovery and ultimately changed his life for the better. He talks about the internal work that went into securing his mental and physical well-being.
Recovery for Nick led to a loving marriage, raising a family and securing employment in the recovery sector, providing an opportunity for him to give something back and to enjoy a sense of purpose, fulfilment and acceptance.
