Project farm tested a bunch of bar oils including stihl, and he found the cheap bar oil preformed the best

I saw that one too. Project farm is very thorough with his testing so I think I’ll buy the oil he recommended

The $10 per gallon won in nearly all categories. Especially in the wear test. It also excelled in the keeping the bar at the coolest temps near the sprocket area.

That’s why I came here, can’t beat PF for testing. Harvest King won by a landslide. You can order it online for 9 bucks, I got 6 gallons!!

@@saltymofo5870 Thanks. Checking on shipping. Probably a fortune considering it is a petroleum product. We'll see.

I have been making my living with a chain saw for 38 years. I have used expensive bar and chain oil, as well as “cheap” bar and chain oil. The only difference I have observed in those 38 years in the expensive and cheap is…the price. I currently run Black Max bar and chain oil from Walmart. At $13.97/gal, it’s the cheapest I can find right now, and it’s what I’ll be running until I find something cheaper.

While i agree that stickiness is a good thing for this application, it's not everything. An oil or grease can be very sticky and tacky without necessarily having great anti wear characteristics.
Further testing is required to properly analyze the protection provided from the oil.

"Liar, Liar, pants on fire... so says my computer..."
Project Farm did thorough testing, Stihl bar oil came in last place, it had almost no wear inhibitors at all... funny how the guys selling you chains and bars insist you use the worse oil.

Here is the difference between the stihl oils I have seen. Stihl woodcutter is good for a bar and chain that is less then 18 inches if I run a bar and chain longer the 18 inches I use the platinum it has more tacifier in it. I have always used the platinum. Seems to be the best oil in my opinion

Yes, they are both great oils, but the platinum does have more tackifier in it.

Walmart hypertough is the same thing as the blackmax, which I believe is the same thing as echo, poulan pro, great oil, I been using it in high 90s here in SC, works great. Dealers always trying to sell you overpriced stuff!

Tackyness is not as important as lubrication.
New oil is being constantly fed to the bar, it only has to stay on for one revolution of the chain.

Here there is a Stihl chain oil in a green bottle that mentions something like vegetable oil.
I could be wrong as I don't have the bottle in front of me.
Is that a product in your country and have you tried it?
    Thank you...!

Wayne, yes, there is a green bottle of bar oil. It is called BioPlus and its base is vegetable oil. The oil is 93.8% biodegradable in 21 days. I have not personally tried it, but we do sell it and have not had any negative feedback!
