    Theres a lot of nay sayers on this subject. My thinking on using waste oil is that at the time that i drained the oil from my engine the oil was still adequate for lubricating all the intricate moving parts and bearings in my diesel engine worth thousands of dollars and it will be just fine for the relatively low demand job of lubing my $50 chainsaw bar for one pass. I have been using waste oil in my saws for several years now, and i get great results. No wear and plenty of oil being carried on the drive links. If you are concerned about bar wear, then you should be focusing your energy on your chain sharpening game rather than expensive bar oil. Running with a dull chain and bearing down to cut through wood will kill your bar even with the best bar oil

    • @OGAOutdoors
      @OGAOutdoors ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Well said sir I agree completely. I get a lot of feedback about the cons of doing this. The one that kills me is that I’m going to wear out my chain faster. I have worn out a lot of chains over my life but not one was due to lack of lubrication. Seems like those little things that do the cutting seem to always wear out first. Thanks for stopping by.

      Motor oil has to meet all kinds of quality standards.
      Bar oil can be anything,
      manufacturer's can put anything they want on the label and still not meet any standard.

    My Dad always used used oil in his saws. 30W in the winter and 90W gear oil from farm tractors in the summer. We were using saws with manual oilers so we would really pump it to it. When I started sawing on my own I mixed bar oil with motor oil, 50-50. Never had issue with premature wear of bar or chain.

    Project Farm did a pretty good comparison test and motor oil did the job pretty well, just have to be aware of it not sticking to the chain as well is all. The heat of the bar was good with the motor oil though and wear was also very competitive.
    Maybe the best of both worlds is to mix it 50/50 with bar oil to get some tackiness in there. It would at least cut the price in half. 👊😉

    I do some chainsaw carving, and in my carving saws I run canola oil and sometimes vegetable oil (not used). As long as you get the particulates out of the oil and it hasn’t lost it’s viscosity, you should be fine. - vegetable oil makes your saw smell like french fries sometimes. So there’s that bonus too. If you see the bar start to smoke, you’re not getting enough lubrication. Vegetable oil is a lot cheaper than bar oil, but I don’t think you can mix vegetable oil and used motor oil very well.

    Don’t know of you have any thought and concern about the environmental aspect. There is a reason why mineral oil is not recommended anymore as bar oil: try speeding up your chain in front of a piece of paper and you’ll see how much oil is spilled off the bar when running a chain saw. Meaning this method is quite a desaster for nature and ground water, as you are contaminating it with used mineral oil. If you give a shit about that, go ahead and “save” money. I’d rather use something that is ‘digestible’ for nature, like biological chain saw oil or vegetable oil. No offense intended, but truth being told.

    Waste oil loses all it's viscosity and lubrication abilities. No tactifiers either. Might as well use water. Running it causes excessive heat to the bar and chain. If you put it in a new saw that has a warranty, you instantly voided it. Get caught with waste oil in your saw doing commercial tree removal or production logging, it's a $5,000 fine for every saw that has it in its tank. Running real bar oil is way cheaper than destroying your bar, chain, oiler, oil lines, and the hefty fine you'll get running it on commercial jobs. There's a reason every saw manufacturer says never to use that crap in your saw.

    • @OGAOutdoors
      @OGAOutdoors ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback. I’m well beyond warranty on my saws. I don’t plan on doing any commercial work just my small firewood business so I think I’ll be ok. I guess time will tell but so far no issues. Take care, Ben.

      @OGA Outdoors You can run what you want. I, on the other hand, don't enjoy bars, chains, and drive sprockets wearing out prematurely because of too much heat from waste oil with no viscosity and tactifiers to keep the oil on the components. A warrant is the least of my concern. I do my own repairs. Filtered or not, waste oil is the worst thing to run if you value your saws. Terrible idea.

      @OGA Outdoors You change to oil in your car or truck, don't you? Why do you change it? It's because the oil has lost its lubrication abilities. Why put old oil in something else when it no longer lubricants? Why not just leave it in your vehicle? It's the same thing, right? It's like changing the oil in your car and putting the old oil into another car. It's stupid.

    Please don’t do that to you saw, to the earth and to your bar and chain. Used oil will cost you more then 10 dollar a gallon bar oil.
    Terrible advise

      Thanks so far so good. I guess I’ll just be the experiment for everyone. It ran great again today. A couple weeks ago bar oil was $18 a gallon in my area. I’ll save enough to buy a new saw at those prices. Thanks for watching take care, Ben.

    Try putting a magnet inside your oil container it may help filter out any small filings .

      That would probably work. I’d find some way and end up with the magnet in the saw lol.

    That's what I'm talking about , leave it up to me and I'll be putting bar oil out of business.
    I went thru one qt of bar oil so fast that I would go broke buying bar oil.
    Bar oil shouldn't be any more costly than a qt of motor oil if not cheaper.

      Yes I agree for sure. I talked to some tree service guys and they were talking $6 prices at tractor supply I may need to check that out. Still doesn’t beat the used motor oil. Take care, Ben.

    My dad ran old motor oil sometime just to use up old drain oil when he had it or was out of bar oil. But in them days the bar oil had a manual pump on the saw.

      Yeah I remember running saws with the manual oilers. So far so good no issues thanks for stopping by take care, Ben.
