You did a good job on this. My dad remembers the BBC footage at the time. I love her first two albums and it's a shame we don't get music of this caliber any longer.
She hooked me in '79 on SNL with Coolesville. Went right out and bought the album. Love Pirates also. Living it up is her best song ever. This is mesmerizing.
Great story! Thanks for sharing it and for cleaning this up and posting. For me, Tom Waits and Rickie Lee in that time represent a sort of cultural high water mark and the essence of late 70s cool
This takes me right back to 13 years old when this album came out.Ricky Lee Jones is so OG and I love that she is still just as relevant in 2021 as she was back then.I can’t wait to read her new memoir!
Thank you, can also recommend checking out 2 of the songs from this concert that I synchronised with the far superior audio of their Dutch concert of the same tour. Rickie made 1979 special and rememerable
THANK YOU!!!! had seen some vid of this concert before, but the audio quality was so bad I turned it off...you've done the world a favor preserving this! hard to believe that was her debut....so polished already
Thank you. i remember watching this on the Whistle Test and was annoyed I did not tape this as I had just bought my first video recorder. Do not think it was repeated. One great highlight was the guitar work of Buzz Feiten who had been with Butterfield at Woodstock.
My own gripe was how badly the BBC audio was. Fortunately as part of that same tour Rickie performed the same songs live in Amsterdam which was recorded for Radio in good quality and can be found on a bootleg called Dutch Courage. I had the idea to synch that Audio to the Whistle Test Video and uploaded to my channel the results.
All these years later, and I suddenly see that bassist/actor Craig Robinson ("The Office") is apparently a vampire, and never gets old. He looks great here, and plays great.. so does Rickie, of course. Thanks for uploading this gem!
Like so many artists back in the 1960 and 1970, they were great despite being significantly impaired. She appears to be pretty coked out here but she still pulls off a great concert.
I saw her last week at the Union Chapel and I saw this gig all those years ago which I'm astonished to find on TH-cam. Anyone know the names of the (cracking) band?
Touring Band for 1979 Debut European shows: Rickie Lee Jones - vocals, guitars, keyboards Neil Larsen - Keyboards Buzzy Feiten - Guitars Reggie McBride - bass Art Rodriguez - drums Steve Letzner - percussion Larry Williams - saxophone
@@jimpreen2888 Your welcome friend, me being from Scotland they are not house hold names but being Scottish did prove to be advantageous after I had moved to Hamburg in 1979 and with David another Scot I met there we got tickets for her Debut gig in Germany which was fortunately in Hamburg and coincided with the coldest January in 100 years so after the gig in -20c we made our way back home with no Taxis as the roads were solid ice and we too fell on our arses a good few times but knew a nice Bar called the Wintergarten that was half way and headed there. Alas we were stopped at the door being told there was a private function on and together we cursed in our Scottish accents which on hearing the guy said, you guys from Scotland ? aye we just came from the Rickie Lee Jones concert, frozen and in need of a dram to warm up, he laughed and said com one in, this is the Rickie Lee Jones after party and almost all the road crew are from Scotland. And so we ended up at her Party and duly introduced and she laughed saying oh no not more Scots and bought us a drink and very welcoming and friendly, a great night and memory.
@@mckayuk I love stories like that, it must have been a brilliant night. At the time my first wife worked at a small record company and got hold of RLJ’s first album before it came out. We were sharing a house with a bunch of other people in Camden, London and we all loved that record and went to see her. So funny when no one cheers when she starts Chuck E’s in love, I assume hardly anyone knew it then. Wish I had gone to the after party!
@@jimpreen2888 Ahh I know Camden from the late 70,s era, a very different time and vibe when at Camden Market you would browse for Albums and Bootlegs, Cowboy Boots and patched Jeans or at least I did lol. Never lived in London but I was living in Cambridge before moving to Hamburg and having friends in London was great for crashing after catching some Band live. By the way although myself and a good few others uploaded her Old Grey Whistle Test appearance at the Dominion Theatre on Sept.9th 1979 the video and audio of all is poor but using modern Video Editing software I took the Audio from her Amsterdam Concert that was aired on the Radio there and not bad so I synched it with the Domian Theatre footage as she played the exact same set list. Its not a perfect match but good enough. Youll find it on my YT channel if you search for "Rickie Lee Jones - Live 1979 - Chuck Es In Love & Easy Money - New HQ Audio". Just a heads up. You take care
If you have the original George it may be possible to run it through Studio One with some choice plugins and mastering to get more from it? I'd be happy to give it a go as I have a studio.
I know who has the original. the BBC in some gigantic archives vault, that is assuming the Old Grey Whistle Test special was kept, back in 79 it was a T.V. Live stream and not actually recorded to tape and latter digitised. Not even Rickie Lee Jones has ever put any of that 79 London gig show on her channel so I have my doubts. It looks to me as if all the youtube uploads came from some who happend to record it to VHC Tape Recorders, which werent very good and that was also my source, someone elses upload. I agree with you, considering there is not one single other live 1979 recording out there its criminal that the original BBC one was never made available. Sadly the audio was really poor for a BBC live stream BUT a few days previous she performed live in Amsterdam and that concert was streamed live over the Radio and available as a H.Q. bootleg. Check my channel, what I did for a few songs was synch the good quality Audio from Amsterdam to the Video of same song recorded in London, not a perfect synch but if you ask me the best out there of Young Blood and Chuck Es In Love. take care
I fell in live with her voice and songs in August 1980 and fell in love with the girl, shortly thereafter. What a treasure this girl is.
Thanks for posting. I was at this concert, in London. I was 18 and it was my first concert.
Dang, it's all downhill from there!
Lucky man.
Im a lucky bunny, i was there!
She's incomperable. She's all the sweet and sassy things about swing, jazz and big bands incarnate.😄
Oh, I love it so much!!!
Back when I was a Sr. in high school we all had a crush on the little girl singing those songs.
Great to hear Ricky Lee Jones again....Many thanks, George.

Thanks for posting I was at this gig!
My only problem with Rickie is I for one can't cover her songs without sounding silly. Rickie and her songs are inseparable.
am a hobby musician and with you on that lol even when I googled how to play Last Chance Texaco and play it, it sounds awful :o( haha.
Rickie is one of a kind. I would love a concert film from back in the 80s. Anything out there I don't know about?
this is so great, so playful, love it
Her first album is one of my all time favorite ones.
Me too! I've loved Rickie's music from day one... and still do, to this day.
THANK U THANK U THANK U!!!!!
Anything with Buzzy & Rickie Lee!
Went to this tour. Loved the album then, still love it now
