She's one of the greatest artists of all time...I don't care for hip hop personally, and I've never liked Chucky's in Love. She's deeper than those kinds of tracks. I wish I could have found her in L.A. To hear her say she was lonely living there makes me sad. I'd love to sit and visit with her, like this lovely young man, and talk with her for hours about all of her work. I loved Pirates, but her album 'Magazine' is PHENOMENAL!😍 AGAIN, I could listen to her sing anything, and speak about herself endlessly... she's so DEEP, and unique. She's TOO MUCH for this world. Great insight. I’ve recently read her book Last Chance Texaco. She’s been through so much. It doesn’t seem like she is taking very good care of herself. I pray she’s clean. She is a wonderful musician and songwriter. I have loved her music for decades.
OMGoodness...She is talking about L.A. and man was she on point. This is exactly how L.A. is. I moved from the East Coast to the West Coast and ended up in L.A. What a lonely nightmare. I once wrote a poem about L.A. .... and the isolation in the midst of crowds. Generally speaking, the South is far more real and understand relationship so much better. So nice Jones found herself once again in the South among a charming, soul people.

I wouldn't put her in the top 100 of legendary musicians.

Her concerts are definitely like church! I saw her on June 25th in ABQ for the 5th time in my life and she made me feel whole again! I am 52 and I have been listening to her since I was 3 years old. : )

Thank you Rickie for staying so real, not the phony vanity that many older women getting caught up in. I'm a long time fan and heartbroken that her concert was cancelled in my small town because of COVID (Spring 2020). And thank you Shad for being such a thoughtful gracious interviewer.
Agreed a really well done interview one that allows her to share with us her own personal challenges. I dont know if Ricki will see this but i had a incredibly special virtually private musical performance by Ricki and her band one evening in the early 90’s at Largo in LA. I had came in to watch my friends band who had finished up very late at Largo and pretty much everyone left except a few at the bar. I was getting ready to leave myself when Ricki and her band came in and played i think was the whole album of Pop Pop. All acoustic i was the only one in the audience. I was so blown away im here by myself sitting in the perfect position and getting what felt like a private performance of what also happens to be my favorite album of hers. If your listening Ricki i just want you to know it was truly a special moment for me that i will never forget. Thank you
Ms. Jones is one of my favorite human beings. Down to earth, honest, insightful, funny, sad, and a wonderful singer and songwriter. I still remember hearing "Last Chance Texaco" for the first time, years ago, and I feel the same way when I hear it now. It just stuns me.
If I had financial freedom, I would also move to New Orleans. I'd like to feel less lonely. Real. Bad. Find some new friends. That. Play. An. Instrument. And we can all come together as one with the music. And of course we love you Rickie for your past work and present. Love the Old School will revisit for new music. Just want to say where i have lived 20 yrs was an Ag n Farm till lately. It is near a lot of mtns. Very beautiful. Well for 5 yrs ppl are moving in and have a wierd phenomenon going on. Ppl walk thru the town or down a grocery store isle and avoid eye contact. It is bad for 3 yrs. They r like robite w no openness. Said this to say... be the different one if you want to find ppl. To be less lonely and connect. Reach out. Speak. Say "hi". Lotz may not respond. Some will. Dont let this coldness build a wall w/o taking out a brick. Take the music you like and turn it outward. Fight this comatose reaction, ppl being insular. Dance, sing on a walk. Look around take in the beauty. 🕊 Respond... 🍃

This was a great interview. I love the way the interviewer left the door open and Ricki was gracious enough to step through. It was cool how, a few times, she was asked a question to which she answered with another question she asked herself. Love her.

An absolutely brilliant interview. I don't think I ever saw anyone as comfortable while being interviews as I did Rickie in this one. Her interviewer handled her like the music royalty that she is and delicately helped her over the things necessary to bring her all out. Very very well done. I love Rickie soooooo much. I was 19 yrs old when her first album came out...l practiced singing Chuck e's in love until l could do a reasonably decent rendition, began wearing berets and got one in every color I could find, and used the name Ricki whenever l needed a stage name or nickname...to this day l answer to that name as quickly as l answer to my own. Obsessive? Yes. I was young, and she rocked my world. I'm not a bit embarrassed about how l reacted to her magic which has the exact same effect on me every single time l listen to her 42 years later. She's a walking sattelite....and that's not vcd even scratching the surface of her depth!
Now that I have watched most of this....Rickie Lee Jones not only has an exceptional soul, but Intellectual acuity that is beyond most people. Wonderful!
One of the most brilliant singers. Once upon a time, I had a band with a wonderful female singer. When she suggested singing Chuck E's, I talked her out of it. There are voices, that are untouchable! Bless her!
As a forever L.A. native, it pains me to hear the things she said about L.A., but it's probably true. I think this happens to people in all big cities, you close up to protect yourself. I've always wanted to check out New Orleans, but I'm not sure if I could live with heavy humidity. Seeing Rickie is like a religious experience, and I'm not religious. So glad to see her drag herself back up and be a contender again. In the middle right now of this very good interview. Why do we see stars? Because it's not about us. We are part of it, but they do not exist because of us. Certain local hip radio stations in L.A. are not currently playing her, and it pisses me off. Seems ageist to me. When you have a remarkable talent and you are still relevant, you need to be heard.

I agree, still haven't seen New Orleans yet, but you do have a higher degree of crime you have to worry about, but I guess if you can deal with that, then it's okay. I have noticed a large degree of people that swear by that city.

That song Chuck E in Love Touched all kind of people. I was 17 years old when it came out.And when I first heard the song it had so much soul. 2021 listening to this it brings back good memories of the song Chuck E in love. "a concert is like church..." this is certainly what she has achieved. Saw her in Milwaukee a couple weeks ago, and we felt an almost spiritual experience. She was incredible, down to earth, and it was as if she was speaking directly to us all, sharing her wonderful songs but also touching us and being with us. Thank you RLJ.
In the spring of 1979 Rickie did 2 shows at Alex Cooley's Capri Ballroom in Atlanta. At that time, my roommate, Mark, worked the Capri's stage door, and we lived on Mathieson, right around the corner from the Capri. I had a ticket for the first show and went over to the theater in the afternoon and started the line at the door. When I got in I planted myself front center on the rail. The show was great, and near the end Rickie remarked on how much she liked Atlanta - the room got quiet and I said, loud enough for everyone in the venue to hear, "so why don't you stay and marry me?". She paused just a moment, and she was less than ten feet away from me, looked me right in the eye, and said "I might have to take you up on that". There was a cacophony of all my Buckhead friends throughout the theater saying "alright Danny" "hey Danny she said yes" and whistling and whooping. That moment was mentioned in the Journal Constitution's review the next day (you can look it up) and a month later people in Buckhead were still calling me 'Rickie Lee Jones fiance'. I didn't have a ticket for the late show but Mark got me in, and I was bummed to see how smacked she was when she came on stage for the 2nd show, I knew right away because I had seen the first show, but most of that audience didn't know that they were getting the watered down version of RLJ. A great artist, and she came through it all tremendously - I sure wish we were still young and beautiful and betrothed, but I'm sure I'd have tried to 'rescue' her and the end result would have been awful, but I would have liked to try.
I saw her in 1980 (or thereabout) in Columbia, MD. I don't go to shows much, but of those I've been too, it was head and shoulders above the rest! Just walk away, Renee.
Hope is the greatest gift that 1 human being can give to another..I have traveled across the sea of despair and despair is defined as the complete and total absence of Hope ( when you ain't got nothing you got nothing to lose) I lived my life like that for years until one day hope showed up in the Forum of a lymphoma cancer diagnosis and with a few options left I got two choices I could either let the cancer kill me or realize for the first time in my life that I am worth saving and I am worth loving and I am worth everything that's possible and positive about walking this Earth free man and for the first time in a long time I had hope. if you had a recent cancer diagnosis or fighting cancer or did not make it because of cancer I love you. listening to Ricky talk about hope was completely inspiring like her music and who she is as an individual or genius pick one. I personally would love to sit down with Rickie Lee Jones and drink coffee in the morning.

Ms. Jones is one of my favorite human beings. Down to earth, honest, insightful, funny,
sad, and a wonderful singer and songwriter. I still remember hearing "Last Chance Texaco"
for the first time, years ago, and I feel the same way when I hear it now. It just stuns me.
She is a humble, beautiful soul and I wish she knew how deeply she has touched some of us.

If I had financial freedom, I would also move to New Orleans. I'd like to feel less lonely. Real. Bad. Find some new friends. That. Play. An. Instrument. And we can all come together as one with the music. And of course we love you Rickie for your past work and present. Love the Old School will revisit for new music. Just want to say where i have lived 20 yrs was an Ag n Farm till lately. It is near a lot of mtns. Very beautiful. Well for 5 yrs ppl are moving in and have a wierd phenomenon going on. Ppl walk thru the town or down a grocery store isle and avoid eye contact. It is bad for 3 yrs. They r like robite w no openness. Said this to say... be the different one if you want to find ppl. To be less lonely and connect. Reach out. Speak. Say "hi". Lotz may not respond. Some will. Dont let this coldness build a wall w/o taking out a brick. Take the music you like and turn it outward. Fight this comatose reaction, ppl being insular. Dance, sing on a walk. Look around take in the beauty. 🕊 Respond... 🍃

This was a great interview. I love the way the interviewer left the door open and Ricki was gracious enough to step through. It was cool how, a few times, she was asked a question to which she answered with another question she asked herself. Love her.

That was a phenomenal interview. I second what coolkayaker1 said, except this is the first one I have seen. It was so DEEP! Most of all, this interview was about Rickie Lee Jones and not the interviewer! So important to be 'invisible' yet enabling (in a good way). Loved it!
Interviewer is excellent, he really listens and follows up with really meaningful questions that allow RLJ to express herself so completely.

An absolutely brilliant interview. I don't think I ever saw anyone as comfortable while being interviews as I did Rickie in this one. Her interviewer handled her like the music royalty that she is and delicately helped her over the things necessary to bring her all out. Very very well done. I always loved Rickie Lee Jones and I always will. Thanks for an amazing interview with the real Queen of Cool.
I love Rickie soooooo much. I was 19 yrs old when her first album came out...l practiced singing Chuck e's in love until l could do a reasonably decent rendition, began wearing berets and got one in every color I could find, and used the name Ricki whenever l needed a stage name or nickname...to this day l answer to that name as quickly as l answer to my own. Obsessive? Yes. I was young, and she rocked my world. I'm not a bit embarrassed about how l reacted to her magic which has the exact same effect on me every single time l listen to her 42 years later. She's a walking sattelite....and that's not vcd even scratching the surface of her depth!
I can( and have)listen(ed) to her for hours...

One of the most brilliant singers. Once upon a time, I had a band with a wonderful female singer. When she suggested singing Chuck E's, I talked her out of it. There are voices, that are untouchable! Bless her!
As a forever L.A. native, it pains me to hear the things she said about L.A., but it's probably true. I think this happens to people in all big cities, you close up to protect yourself. I've always wanted to check out New Orleans, but I'm not sure if I could live with heavy humidity. Seeing Rickie is like a religious experience, and I'm not religious. So glad to see her drag herself back up and be a contender again. In the middle right now of this very good interview. Why do we see stars? Because it's not about us. We are part of it, but they do not exist because of us. Certain local hip radio stations in L.A. are not currently playing her, and it pisses me off. Seems ageist to me. When you have a remarkable talent and you are still relevant, you need to be heard.

I agree, still haven't seen New Orleans yet, but you do have a higher degree of crime you have to worry about, but I guess if you can deal with that, then it's okay. I have noticed a large degree of people that swear by that city.
I've grown up reading about the musical community in LA, it's a shame it didn't seem to exist for RLJ, maybe because she's an older woman.
New Orleans , is a horrible place , for anyone educated or non-reptilian.
This was a very good interview. Good questions from the interviewer and Ms. Jones gives wonderful honest answers into what she feels toward herself and what music means to her.

Touched all kind of people. I was 17 years old when it came out.And when I first heard the song it had so much soul. 2021 listening to this it brings back good memories of the song Chuck E in love. You had a cross over song. all people love that song it will never get old

I met her after a show. A very gracious woman.
Rickie makes wonderful music. Her voice is sublime. I admire her lyrics and her intonation. What do I know. I am a bloke from England.
"a concert is like church..." this is certainly what she has achieved. Saw her in Milwaukee a couple weeks ago, and we felt an almost spiritual experience. She was incredible, down to earth, and it was as if she was speaking directly to us all, sharing her wonderful songs but also touching us and being with us. Thank you RLJ.

In the spring of 1979 Rickie did 2 shows at Alex Cooley's Capri Ballroom in Atlanta. At that time, my roommate, Mark, worked the Capri's stage door, and we lived on Mathieson, right around the corner from the Capri. I had a ticket for the first show and went over to the theater in the afternoon and started the line at the door. When I got in I planted myself front center on the rail. The show was great, and near the end Rickie remarked on how much she liked Atlanta - the room got quiet and I said, loud enough for everyone in the venue to hear, "so why don't you stay and marry me?". She paused just a moment, and she was less than ten feet away from me, looked me right in the eye, and said "I might have to take you up on that". There was a cacophony of all my Buckhead friends throughout the theater saying "alright Danny" "hey Danny she said yes" and whistling and whooping. That moment was mentioned in the Journal Constitution's review the next day (you can look it up) and a month later people in Buckhead were still calling me 'Rickie Lee Jones fiance'. I didn't have a ticket for the late show but Mark got me in, and I was bummed to see how smacked she was when she came on stage for the 2nd show, I knew right away because I had seen the first show, but most of that audience didn't know that they were getting the watered down version of RLJ. A great artist, and she came through it all tremendously - I sure wish we were still young and beautiful and betrothed, but I'm sure I'd have tried to 'rescue' her and the end result would have been awful, but I would have liked to try.
I saw her in 1980 (or thereabout) in Columbia, MD. I don't go to shows much, but of those I've been too, it was head and shoulders above the rest! Just walk away, Renee.

Hope is the greatest gift that 1 human being can give to another..I have traveled across the sea of despair and despair is defined as the complete and total absence of Hope ( when you ain't got nothing you got nothing to lose) I lived my life like that for years until one day hope showed up in the Forum of a lymphoma cancer diagnosis and with a few options left I got two choices I could either let the cancer kill me or realize for the first time in my life that I am worth saving and I am worth loving and I am worth everything that's possible and positive about walking this Earth free man and for the first time in a long time I had hope. if you had a recent cancer diagnosis or fighting cancer or did not make it because of cancer I love you. listening to Ricky talk about hope was completely inspiring like her music and who she is as an individual or genius pick one. I personally would love to sit down with Rickie Lee Jones and drink coffee in the morning.
