Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma are some of my personal favs. I also like the Shadowrun RPG for SNES, which is very different from the P&P version. I never managed to complete it, but I always find the beginning and middle part of 7th Sage to be fun.
Lufia 2 was great. I loved the Zelda like dungeon elements. The battles had the IP system. Using equipment with abilities for custom builds. It's very similar to both Limit Breaks and Materia from FF7 combined together. On the final floor with the Master Jelly, the party can kill themselves to win.
Except for the FF series, it seems that you have a strong preference for action RPGs and/or RPGs which don't have random encounters. I'm not crazy about random encounters in this day and age either, though you kind of just have to go with it in order to enjoy everything else that is good about many older or more traditional JRPGs. That said, I'm definitely glad that FF6 (the GOAT) has the Moogle Charm for its second half. I always make a bee-line for it first chance I get. If you haven't played it, and especially since you have its two predecessors on your list, you should definitely check out Quintet's Terranigma. Very cool and fun game that I remember actually moved me emotionally on one part. The other obvious recommendations are the rest of the Mana-type games on SNES, one being the unofficial USA sequel Secret of Evermore and the other being the actual sequel, Trials of Mana (which wasn't localized until fairly recently, so you might know it as Seiken Densetsu 3).
My only criticism of this list is that it should be extended so that you can include your honorable mentions, because they are so very much deserving to be on this list, although I do understand why, link to the past was not placed on this list.
I'm just now finding your channel after seeing that you had a large break in videos. Just wanted to let you know you have a wonderful personality and make great videos. Hope you continue to grow and make more content.
Earthbound is definitely my favorite SNES RPG with SMRPG as a close 2nd. As a kid, I just loved how funny and silly the character dialogue is in those games
I've always had the theory that if you were to compare the most fondly remembered games from the SNES/PS1 era to the ones that people think have the best soundtrack, that Venn diagram would be a circle. Well done music is an amazing nostalgia trigger.
My childhood in a video. That and the PS1 were the golden years for RPGs I think, with PS2 also having a strong showing. I feel like any Final Fantasy between 4 and 12 are perfectly viable answers...minus 11 of course. Not because it was bad but because it was an MMO.
EarthBound is my all-time favorite SNES RPG, but I'm aware it's a bit quirky. However, I love how it kind of broke the mold cast by Dragon Quest and solidified by Final Fantasy: instead of dragons, magic and swords in a fantasy setting of ages past, you have psychic abilities, fight with a bat, and it takes place in 199X in Eagleland, a parody of 90's US and pop-culture. It was different and original, and still stands out after all these years. That being said, I love many of the games on your list, and I love your channel Tantacles, keep up the good work!
I desperately want a true sequel to super Mario RPG. With good CGI graphics , fun writing, wacky characters and the turn based gameplay I love! I still dream
I don't why but Illusion of Gaia is so good. Crappy story but the gameplay/puzzle dungeon is so good. Burn the piggy! Lufia 2 is a pure gem. The ancient cave, the dragon egg and the pokemon.. wow! Super Mario RPG - so perfect. Funny moment, nice combat! From all console, snes and playstation jrpg are the one I always come back. Awsome soundtrack and pixel art.
I was wondering why i started gravitating toward your videos recently. Once i heard you say ff8 was your favorite, it all makes sense now lmao. Seriously though, it's my favorite game of all time in any genre, it's so unfairly hated on. Also, as an introvert myself, squall is the most relatable character in gaming for me, and i think he's incredibly misunderstood by most people who play the game. I think he's incredibly well written, and it's a shame that most people dont pay attention to his character growth.
Excellent list, can't say I've beaten all of th m but I've at least played most. Been playing a variety of games over the past 30+ years from all different Genres & I've gotten quite good at taking the rose tinted glasses off, so I'm trying to be as impartial as possible when I say this. Chrono Trigger & Mario RPG are as close to a "Perfect" game that I've ever played. I could talk about why for hours, but it boils down to tight design, not over staying their welcome, innovation to an existing genre & the fact games were less complex during the time they were released. While personally I'd swap positions of the two, I think their more 1a & 1b anyways. Side note, I felt the same about FF6 & FF8 back in the day too. I find it hard to replay any JRPG with random battles that isn't Chrono Cross anymore though as I feel it's something that's quite archaic, it won't stop me but I gives me pause.
It would be nice if in the secret of mana remake you could customise between old BGM and graphics and new BGM and graphics like in the wonderboy remake
I might be biased, but i'd say ff mystic quest is one of the best just for its simplicity and charm, i'd say it's the perfect rpg for a new player to try out
I love Illusion of Gaia but isn't it an action game, not a RPG? But agreed on the music. I feel like track for track it has the best score on the SNES. And To The New World is fantastic! It always seems like it needed lyrics. Also, FF6 is my favorite game ever. If you want a game that's very much styled like a SNES JRPG, check out Radiant Historia. It's heavily in the same vein, despite being on the DS (with a 3DS remake).
Breath of Fire is an absolute classic and Breath of Fire 2 is a truly great JRPG and my favorite of the series. Great series on the whole, too (even BoFV which while more of a dungeon crawler is among my top 5 favorite PS2 RPGs).
Welp, forgot to hit the button to post the comment...Short n sweet then. Great vid, you describe everything well and just enough, and I plan on trying out FF4 Enterprise, now that I know it exists thanks to you. Loved FF4CC, so I look forward to it.
Shout out to anyone who plays FF Mystic Quest, hands down one of my favorite games of all time, not sure why. The music is dope fs. I wouldnt say its better than ChronoTrigger but there are scarce few that can top that game.
If you ever wanna go, super retro, there is a NES game that I would strongly recommend for you, “Crystalis”. It plays very much like Zelda: A Link to the Past, but in its own unique way.
@@tantacles wow, you’re the first person I’ve spoken to that ever played Crystalis, let alone heard of it. I no longer feel like the only one in the world. Lol.
Hi, I think that Lufia 2 should had been in the list and Chrono Tigger always #1. But its your list and you had bias for playing Mario before doing this video LOL
4:55 i've only ever made it halfway through that game, but i always found it was a waste of time to charge anything up past 100%...i'm sure it's got situational uses, but it seemed like every battle i ever did, steadily attacking with 100% power was always the most effective
@@tantacles Personally I didn't care for it. I disliked the junction system and none of the characters really grew on me. But we each have our own opinions and you are entitled to yours. FFX is my favorite as it was the first JRPG I ever played and I fell in love with it. I still have my ps2 memory card with all my save files. I'd say 9 is my second favorite of the franchise with Crisis Core being in third place.
@@tantacles 8 is good for what it is. It just takes a different mindset than other RPGs. I enjoyed it, especially since I love becoming overpowered as quickly as possible.
@@tantacles 8 is in my top five, and mostly because of Triple Triad. I remember being back in high school when it came out. My friends and I actually made our own cards based off it using index card. We'd shuffle them, and play using the Random rule. It was a lot of laughs. It was a shame that 9 messed up the card game so badly.
Did you forget about Terranigma or did you not play it? I love most of the games on this list but Terranigma would be #1 for me. Along with "The Longest Journey" it has the most emotional and spiritual story that defines how i see the world to this day.

Super Mario RPG always had great sprite work. They were so animated and effective. Loved the Princess Toadstool sprite in the thumbnail!
Whenever I buy a game, I want it to captivate me just like chrono trigger did all those years ago.
Mystic Quest holds a special place in my heart. It was the very first RPG I played as a kid. Rented it multiple times.
It may not have the most enthralling story or deepest mechanics, but the soundtrack slaps hard.

It's an action adventure game. I think Zelda 2 was the only with actual RPG elements involved.
