As someone who has used manabox for a while, great to see it get some recognition.
As to the Archivist...it is way overpriced for what is essentially half of a 20$ auto shuffler set to low speed.

$200 for a 3d printed box with a roller? If the thing sorted and organized cards, then sure I could see it being worth it. This ain't it though. It's just dropping a card win a set interval and your phone is doing all the work You could probably make the same thing with an old shoebox, a toilet paper tube, and some rubberbands.

    • @Luteloots

I feel like we're likely going to see 3D printable versions of this sort of product fairly quickly. Biggest challenge would likely be sanding and such to make sure it doesn't damage cards though.
The real trick is getting one with a built in micro-controller or such that directly connects to a mobile app such that it only moves to the next card once the previous one is scanned, and stops when it misses a card, sending out an error code noise or such.
Technically with a raspberry pi or such you could likely just plug in a USB webcam and have it all handled from the same device without needing a phone at all. Have it save the list to your google drive or even some website potentially. Though I'm not sure how well your average webcam will do scanning cards; if it's high enough resolution compared to a cell phone camera.

Yeah agreed. $200 for this is absolute insanity. A lithium battery and small motor with a timer. The rest is just 3D printed parts. It’s about 50 quid in parts including the material cost. It’s a good idea but it not having any smarts is the real killer.

The app has no way to tell the device to slow down or speed up. Without any communication between the two, it's going to error out like crazy on cards, missing them or misidentifying.

TCG Player app is unintuitive, but works well. I'm able to scan a card every second, and rarely have to modify the result.
    Some tips:
Dont point the camera staight down at the card from above; instead, hold it closer to the same plane that the card is on. The view of the card will be askew. The app projects a rhomboid white outline shich hints at this.
To prevent the double/triple scan, don't let a card linger in its view or move it after placing: Place card > Beep > remove card. It takes a little practice.
The only issue I have with TCG Player is with tokens and List cards. It always gets confused about which set/version those are. Scan them separately because they'll take a lot of manual sorting.
Finally, as others have said, you can set the foil option manually for each card or before you start scanning. I scan my foils together so that I only set this once per batch. Just don't forget to turn it back to normal before starting a stack of 2,000 normal cards, not that it's ever happened to me or anything....
    Hope that helps!

I love manabox and have been using it for a year or two now, but one issue I’ve had is that it’s really annoying to scan multiple copies of the same card one after the other (i.e., cards with the same artwork because the manabox scanner can’t distinguish between different set printings of a card with the same artwork) - you either have to wait for ~10 seconds for the most recently-scanned card to leave the “buffer”, or scan a different card between multiple copies in order to keep scanning at a decent rate. That said, the reason it’s annoying for me is also probably the reason why it didn’t scan the same card multiple times in your video (unlike the TCGPlayer app), so it may actually be of benefit in this particular case. It’s probably just worthwhile going through any stacks of cards and making sure you don’t have any duplicates back to back before you put them into the machine.

Not gonna lie, this seemed more like an app review than the product review lol. That said, as someone who had previously scanned maybe 25k cards by hand with an app, this seems very expensive for what it does. I may be a bit biased, though. Will definitely be looking into manabox. Random nerd thought, too - I wonder what is different with the scanners in apps to make some better or worse than others

And also, does this device work with sleeved cards? I tend to build and modify my decks a lot and then try later to add them to a decklist on manabox, and something like this would make that so much easier.

One minor downside manabox has that if you want to keep track of more than 5 decks, deck folders and binders (each) you have to pay a subscription fee of €2.49 a month (Or €24,99). I think it is worth to pay for maintaining the database and updating to newer OS versions, but I feel a subscription is too expensive just to maintain a good grip on your collection. But perhaps I'm just stingy.

    • @PhoenicopterusR
      @PhoenicopterusR 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

If you really wanted to, you could pay for as long as it takes to sort a collection out, then upload it to a site for free and cancel the subscription. At least then you're able to do future additions for free so long as you keep up with it. I know stuff's expensive but like, that's slightly under the cost of a mcdonalds cheeseburger for a whole month.

@crocopeet1900 it's okay, we're all addicts here. What I said is pretty much what I did: spent the $3.50/mo or whatever on DelverLens, then I uploaded it to Moxfield into different categories for each box. ~30k cards were relatively easy to knock out, if not a little time-consuming. However, it was less time-consuming and now I can just manually add or remove things as they go in/out of the collection for free.
I guess in the end it's really up to how and where you want to catalog your cards, but minimizing that initial slog was worth it in my mind.

Unless someone can actually *design* , manufacture and distribute similar devices (add speed control for convenience 😉) for less, price should be OK - and might make _some_ profit. You are very roughly comparing materials and ignoring all the work behind it.
There are manual things for us cheap (and we can wait for _ping_ (hoping to hear _ping ping ping!_ 😅) before sliding another card in) 😉
